Today is Youth Day at COP29 Azerbaijan, and our demands are clear and urgent: #Youth must be at the heart of climate action! As the generation that will bear the most severe impacts of the climate crisis, we cannot afford to be sidelined from the decisions being made today. These decisions will shape our future, and our exclusion undermines the principles of fairness, equity, and sustainability. Inclusion of youth is not just about representation; it brings fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and renewed energy to the fight against climate change. Youth are catalysts for transformative solutions, offering hope and resilience in the face of escalating global challenges. It is time to fully integrate youth into all processes of the UNFCCC UN, ensuring that their voices are heard, valued, and acted upon. Our demands are simple: ♻️ Youth Representation: A seat at every decision-making table where climate policies are designed and implemented. ♻️Capacity Building: Investment in programs that equip young people with the skills and tools needed to lead climate solutions. ♻️Intergenerational Dialogue: A commitment to fostering collaboration between youth and seasoned climate leaders for inclusive and holistic approaches. ♻️Resource Allocation: Financial and technical resources to empower youth-led initiatives, innovations, and research addressing the climate crisis. The fight against climate change is a collective responsibility, but youth bring unparalleled determination and vision. By embracing youth leadership, we unlock a future filled with innovation, adaptability, and hope. Let us act now together. The time to bridge the generational gap and unite for a sustainable planet is today. #YouthDay #COP29 #ClimateActionNow #YouthVoicesMatter #SustainableFuture #IntergenerationalEquity #ClimateJustice #UNFCCC #FreshPerspectives

🤔 Have you also heard about how the last COP improved youth inclusion? Are you sure about that? And if so, in what terms? 👩🏼🤝👨🏽 We all know that youth, as future adults, are at the forefront of advocating for climate change, and it is evident how they are positively and strongly influencing the scene. Institutions and adults are starting to consider and involve them more and more compared to the past, recognizing their value, but at a certain level that is still not possible to be considered as a complete inclusion. Indeed at COP28, yes, the amount of youth who participated was definitely much higher compared to the previous COPs, which is a great and essential step forward since this opens the doors to many new opportunities for much more youth. However, let’s take a deeper look at this growth in youth participation from a more qualitative perspective. 🔍 Also according to the Youth Stocktake of UNFCCC Processes released by YOUNGO, what appears is that youth participating at COP28 were mainly restricted to observers. Indeed many of them did not have access to negotiations, and even those who did still had to deal with barriers that were affecting their effectiveness, with the consequence of being often excluded from the actual decision-making processes. 🚫 Do you think that there could be sings of youth washing in this matter? 👇🏻 Have a look at my article below “Youth involvement in COP28 negotiations: struggles behind the scenes” for Rethinking Climate to better explore this theme and let me know what you think about it! 🇮🇹 Ps You will soon find it in Italian as well, published by Osservatorio Parigi on their website!

Over the past few weeks, The Global Youth Coalition has brought together youth leaders and climate advocates from around the world to discuss pressing issues in climate action. Here are some key takeaways from recent sessions: A key theme has been the role of non-state actors, youth, indigenous groups, and governments in shaping Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Their engagement is critical in driving ambitious climate commitments and aligning corporate actions with national policies. Tailoring climate strategies to local contexts, particularly in the Global South, is essential for ensuring equitable and sustainable progress. Another central focus was the phasing out of fossil fuels. This session highlighted the need for a rapid transition from coal, oil, and gas to renewable energy, while ensuring a just transition for affected communities. Achieving a carbon-neutral future requires global cooperation and accelerated efforts to phase out fossil fuels. The discussions also centered around the challenge of net-zero pledges, particularly the ambition-action gap. While many countries and companies have committed to net-zero targets, often there is a lack of clear interim steps and roadmaps to achieve these goals. Bridging this gap is crucial for tracking progress, ensuring accountability, and achieving meaningful climate action. Grateful for the chance to be part of these critical conversations. Big thanks to the The Global Youth Coalition, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford, and Oxford Net Zero for such impactful sessions! 🌱 #GYCT2024 #fossilfuelphaseout #climateaction #COP29
