First Experience at #COP29 - Youth Climate Action & Policy 🌱🌍 Attending COP29 as a first-time UBC delegate has been both inspiring and affirming of the essential role youth play in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future. Over the past days, I’ve participated in youth-led sessions including: 1. Ensuring Intergenerational Equity in Climate Finance: Youth-led Dialogue on the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG) & 2. LCIPP Annual Youth Roundtable - Part 1: Exchange Amongst Indigenous Youth and Youth From Local Communities A major focus of the Global Youth Statement at COP29 has been on climate finance, ensuring that it reaches marginalized and most vulnerable communities without systemic and bureaucratic barriers. It’s about ensuring that resources empower those most impacted by climate change I also witnessed Indigenous youth from around the globe, sharing ways of intertwining tradition with climate resilience. From sustainable land use in Africa and coral restoration in the Pacific, to nature-based therapy in the Arctic, youth are innovating and honouring traditional practices to drive local and global climate solutions. 🌿✨ Whether through mental health programs or cultural revitalization, we’re here to ensure that OUR VOICES resonate in climate decision-making. As future leaders, we need a seat at the table, not just for dialogue, but to shape policies that reflect a sustainable and just world. #COP29 #YouthInAction #ClimateFinance #IndigenousYouth #ClimateJustice

This means inclusive participation from policy to implementation and from COP to back home, such as continuous, inclusive post-COP pledges to actions in the design, implementation and monitoring phases of initiatives. 💲 Increase finance to child- and youth-led nature-positive actions and innovation programs while also ensuring governments are held accountable on reporting on child-focused climate funding and long-term strategies. 🙌🏽 Increase access for vulnerable youth to climate-smart, nature- and land-based knowledge and skills to take on the current and future challenges posed by climate change and land degradation. This includes actively including children and youth in national restoration and climate action initiatives providing youth employment opportunities in the transition skills gap, particularly in nature-based solutions, eco-based adaptation, green, blue and circular economy. 🌳 Highlight the traditional knowledge and leadership of indigenous and local communities in driving local-led climate action and sustainable land management. Recognize the vital role of indigenous children and youth in these efforts, ensuring their active participation and leadership. Engage children and youth in intergenerational learning opportunities with elders, blending cultural and traditional knowledge with modern restoration and conservation practices. 💡 Incorporate technology alongside traditional practices to enhance these efforts to preserve a culture of land stewardship for future generations and foster youth-led climate action, creating first-land learning experiences with nature from early learning to school-based curriculums to value nature’s role in protecting children and youth across their childhood. #COP29 #COP16 #UNCCD #UNFCCC #ClimateAction #YouthVoices #OurPlanetOurFuture

A heartfelt thanks to the individuals and organizations who have signed our call to action, urging global leaders at COP29 to prioritize young children in climate action and finance. Your unwavering support fuels our collective advocacy for children’s rights and resilience in the face of climate change. The evidence is stark: nearly half of the world’s children live in countries at high risk of climate and environmental hazards. While all children are vulnerable, the youngest are the most at risk due to their rapidly developing brains and dependency on caregivers. Alarmingly, nearly 90% of the global health burden linked to climate change falls on children under five. These statistics demand urgent, equitable, and inclusive climate action that protects children, families, and communities from the direct and indirect impacts of climate change. Learn more about our call to action: Raise Your Voice for Young Children in Climate Change https://lnkd.in/eSFA2B-t As we set our sights on COP30 in Brazil, we are committed to pushing for bolder solutions that protect the youngest and most vulnerable members of our global community. Together, we can ensure a brighter, more sustainable future for all children. #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #COP29 #COP30 #EarlyYears

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) ended on Wednesday, with an agreement to transition away from fossil fuels. It is a bit disappointing to think after 28 years of climate negotiations, this is as far as we progressed. What is not disappointing is to see how children have continued to take action and to advocate for change. Nomin, from Mongolia, is a girl, who makes me proud to work at World Vision and brings me hope. She was selected to be a child leader because she has a long history of activism on environmental issues. At COP 28, she participated at a 'climate challenges faced by the youth' session and was an effective advocate with global leaders and decision-makers. She even met with the Taoiseach of Ireland, Leo Varadkar. Now back in Mongolia, Nomin plans to continue advocating for investment in renewable energy and planting trees. Her goal is not only to raise her voice, but to take action to make the world a safer and healthier place for future generations. We at World Vision are proud to support boys and girls like Nomin, who have demonstrated time and again that given respect and opportunity, can be effective agents of change, at all levels of government.
