Former US Secretary and CEO of the Latino Community Foundation, Julián Castro and Noramay Cadena (Managing Partner, Supply Change Capital; Cofounder and Managing Partner, MiLA Capital; Board Director, Latino Community Foundation, CARE) joined NACD Northern California's Latino Cafecito today to dive into a dynamic discussion about how Latino directors are spearheading the flow of capital, both philanthropic and investment-oriented, to uplift their community and foster entrepreneurial growth.
The session, moderated by Sandra R. Hernández, M.D. (President and CEO, California HealthCare Foundation; Board Director, 23andMe Inc., California Health Care Foundation, California Office of Health Care Affordability, National Academy of Medicine Leadership Consortium) was important in highlighting the importance of the Latino community in the U.S. and how board directors and philanthropists can support the pursuit of economic and social impact in this community. Key takeaways and the full recording can be found below:
💡 Gain Support for Latino Representation Using Data💡
☑ Encourage your boards to evaluate the representation of Latinos on the board and executive team with the economic data to back it.
- Note the significant underrepresentation of Latinos on corporate and public-serving boards, with less than 5% of Fortune 500 board seats held by Latinos despite making up 40% of California's population.
- A UCLA study shows If Latinos in the U.S. were an independent country, their GDP would be the world’s fifth largest, outpacing the UK, France and India. This type of data can support advocacy for increased focus on Latino talent and showcase the power of Latino consumers.
💡Be Your True Self in the Boardroom💡
☑ Use your unique personal journey and culture as your superpower to provide a new perspective for your boards and companies, and be your true self to help the community.
💡Do Your Part for the Latino Community💡
☑ Explore collaborations with organizations like the Latino Community Foundation and Latino Corporate Directors Association (LCDA) Foundation to boost representation and impact.
☑ Harness your network and relationships to expand the reach and effectiveness of upcoming Latino leaders. Be proactive and not reactive in making introductions.
☑ Encourage allies to use their influence to bring Latino voices into decision-making rooms and advocate for equitable representation in private markets.
Leverage the philanthropic and economic power of the Latino community, which currently receives only 1.1% of philanthropic donations.
Thank you to the generous support of our partner Tara Tays, Pay Governance LLC to showcase our commitment to advocating for Latinos in the boardroom.

Yesterday evening I met two incredible women who are visiting a friend of mine.
KC Gauldine was one of these women, and she gave me a profoundly juicy piece of wisdom for leaders: “Good leaders bring problems to their team, not solutions.” She described her “yes, and” approach for gathering feedback and ideas during a team brainstorming meeting.
It’s funny, because in the academic world you’re taught to show up with solutions, not problems. So I am rewiring my brain to share these problems with others and not pretend as if I have all the answers (because I certainly don’t!!)
This afternoon, Andrea Parrish and I had a great brainstorming session at New Love coffee in Liberty Lake. She reiterated what KC said and informed me that research has shown when you ask someone for a favor, they actually like you more!!
I asked for Andrea’s help in crafting our message so we can more clearly articulate our value proposition at Let's Build a Community. I was not expecting such powerful messaging to be born!
I’d been missing the link between quitting medicine and starting this nonprofit. And when Andrea led me to that link, I couldn’t help but laugh at how obvious it was and then tear up by how moving the transformation has been.
I can’t wait to sit down tomorrow morning to read through our notes and embrace the full story of who we are, what we do, and why we do it.
How lucky am I?

GivingTuesday is a Movement that Unleashes the Power of Radical Generosity Around the World. It reimagines a world built upon shared humanity and generosity. Our global network collaborates year-round to inspire generosity around the world, with a common mission to build a world where generosity is part of everyday life.
Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.
Across six continents, hundreds of thousands of leaders and millions of people work together to change, and in many cases, transform their communities for the better. The GivingTuesday nucleus supports that local impact through networked leadership development in communities around the world; storytelling and strategic communication that uplifts the impacts of generosity; the deployment of human, financial, and social capital to and throughout the movement; and ultimately, the global ritualization of generosity, which has dramatically increased the rate at which people give and volunteer worldwide.
GivingTuesday is invested in communities around the globe with a mandate to propel generosity across every culture, continent, and context.

"There are two choices in terms of core values. You can talk about them and put them on posters and mouse mats and screen savers blah blah blah. Or, you can do them."
Bob Keiller's TEDx talk was enjoyable from start to finish. He's authentic and very funny.
Centering an organization around its core values can be easier in the nonprofit sphere because nonprofits aren't driven by revenue. The values drive the work that we do and connect us with the resources that further our mission. In the for-profit space, thinking often narrows to a revenue-oriented focus. That explains Keiller's call from his previous boss reprimanding him for putting safety values first.
His strategy to integrate core values into his next organization shows that it's possible for any kind of entity to function with its values at the center, by putting them into action.

At Chhoti Si Asha Trust, we’ve learned to see beyond the surface. Many of the kids here are not just students but leaders in the making. It’s in the way they quietly help their friends with studies, step forward to volunteer at our events, and dream, not just for themselves but for others too.
Most people think leadership starts when you’re older, when you have the power, the title, the authority. But here, we see it every day in the smallest acts of courage and kindness. It’s the 10-year-old who stays back after class to help clean up. It’s the 12-year-old who gives up his share of a treat so his friend can have more. It’s in the moments that most of the world overlooks.
The future we dream of, one where compassion, strength, and justice lead the way is already taking shape in these children. They remind us that greatness doesn’t come from titles or achievements, but it comes from the way you care, the way you show up, and the way you believe. We are honoured to walk beside them as they take their first steps toward changing the world. Because when our children says, we will make sure no one feels left behind, we don’t just believe them, but we know they will make it happen.

Finding the right path starts with understanding your talents, but it's not always easy to know where to start. 🎯
Our founder, Konosuke Matsushita, himself adopted the practice of regularly consulting his mentors when faced with uncertainty. He found that when we reflect calmly and avoid being driven by overwhelming ambition or desire, the path ahead becomes clearer and hope follows naturally. By listening carefully and remaining humble, we can better absorb the valuable insights our mentors and elders share with us. 🧠🙏
It's a reminder that with patience, humility and the right guidance, we can confidently navigate our careers and discover our true potential.
