Former US Secretary and CEO of the Latino Community Foundation, Julián Castro and Noramay Cadena (Managing Partner, Supply Change Capital; Cofounder and Managing Partner, MiLA Capital; Board Director, Latino Community Foundation, CARE) joined NACD Northern California's Latino Cafecito today to dive into a dynamic discussion about how Latino directors are spearheading the flow of capital, both philanthropic and investment-oriented, to uplift their community and foster entrepreneurial growth. The session, moderated by Sandra R. Hernández, M.D. (President and CEO, California HealthCare Foundation; Board Director, 23andMe Inc., California Health Care Foundation, California Office of Health Care Affordability, National Academy of Medicine Leadership Consortium) was important in highlighting the importance of the Latino community in the U.S. and how board directors and philanthropists can support the pursuit of economic and social impact in this community. Key takeaways and the full recording can be found below: 💡 Gain Support for Latino Representation Using Data💡 ☑ Encourage your boards to evaluate the representation of Latinos on the board and executive team with the economic data to back it. - Note the significant underrepresentation of Latinos on corporate and public-serving boards, with less than 5% of Fortune 500 board seats held by Latinos despite making up 40% of California's population. - A UCLA study shows If Latinos in the U.S. were an independent country, their GDP would be the world’s fifth largest, outpacing the UK, France and India. This type of data can support advocacy for increased focus on Latino talent and showcase the power of Latino consumers. 💡Be Your True Self in the Boardroom💡 ☑ Use your unique personal journey and culture as your superpower to provide a new perspective for your boards and companies, and be your true self to help the community. 💡Do Your Part for the Latino Community💡 ☑ Explore collaborations with organizations like the Latino Community Foundation and Latino Corporate Directors Association (LCDA) Foundation to boost representation and impact. ☑ Harness your network and relationships to expand the reach and effectiveness of upcoming Latino leaders. Be proactive and not reactive in making introductions. ☑ Encourage allies to use their influence to bring Latino voices into decision-making rooms and advocate for equitable representation in private markets. Leverage the philanthropic and economic power of the Latino community, which currently receives only 1.1% of philanthropic donations. Thank you to the generous support of our partner Tara Tays, Pay Governance LLC to showcase our commitment to advocating for Latinos in the boardroom. Kindness and generosity, of heart and soul, are linked to various neurobiological processes in the brain, primarily involving neurotransmitters such as oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine. Oxytocin: Often called the "love hormone" or "bonding hormone," oxytocin plays a crucial role in social bonding, trust, and empathy. Acts of kindness, such as giving or helping others, can trigger the release of oxytocin in the brain. This hormone promotes feelings of connection and enhances social interactions. Serotonin: Serotonin is known as the "feel-good" neurotransmitter and is associated with mood regulation and well-being. Engaging in kind and generous behaviors has been shown to increase serotonin levels, leading to a sense of satisfaction and happiness. Dopamine: Dopamine is involved in the brain's reward system and is associated with motivation and pleasure. Acts of kindness and generosity can activate the release of dopamine, creating a positive feedback loop that reinforces these behaviors. Endorphins: Kindness and generosity can also trigger the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood enhancers. This can contribute to the "helper's high" phenomenon, where individuals experience a sense of euphoria after performing acts of kindness. Additionally, engaging in altruistic behaviors has been linked to reduced levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, further promoting overall well-being and psychological resilience. Overall, the neurochemistry of kindness and generosity involves a complex interplay of neurotransmitters and hormones that contribute to positive emotions, social bonding, and overall mental health.

How much better would our businesses be if we paid attention to the little people, those in most organisations who are sometimes seen but seldom heard? A great example is the catalyst that catapulted Nando’s into the UK market. Bruce McInroy, who worked in the central kitchen at Nando’s, approached co-founder Robbie Brozin with an idea. Instead of getting brushed aside, he was taken seriously. “You need to meet family friends of my parents. You share similar values. If you are thinking about expanding to the UK, you should talk to them, they are South African but are there now,” McInroy told Brozin. It was thanks to this very conversation with McInroy that Brozin set up a meeting at outlet number 3 in Savoy, ultimately leading the founders to Dick Enthoven, who made a speedy commitment to funding its growth. As McInroy predicted, their values, passed down through generations on both sides, were strongly aligned. And, over three decades later, there is still no written agreement between the families whose association is based on trust. Kindness is strategic. Being generous with your time, attention, and resources can open doors you didn’t even know existed. That’s why it’s my 7th Rule of Success. TEN CONTROVERSIAL MOMENTS IN OUR SHOW Brigit Douglas's post is lovely, and my co-presenter entrepreneur friends are the bee's knees (what do they look like?). Jenn Crowther and Ian Farrar turn a grey-bearded, long-haired ancient philosopher's riches to rags story into a spectacular myth-busting, values-based journey of know-how and know-who discovery. The "Be More Happipreneur" Show is for all enterprising people, whether employed or self-employed, and all those who support enterprising people. It's a joyous, celebratory, informative, fun and interactive show with controversial moments. Here are ten controversial moments. Find out WHY: 1. We prefer to surround ourselves with family and a few great friends rather than many successful people. 2. Making ends meet, avoiding debt, and ensuring business survival are more important than funding or striving to achieve big dreams and business growth. 3. The "millionaire mindset" usually leads to debt and depression. 4. Being a happipreneur (happy at work 80%+ of the time) is fulfilling, useful, energising and fabulous for your communities. 5. Only 10% of #startups in Silicon Valley survive the first 3 years of trading when an 80%+ survival rate is easily achievable. 6. No successful entrepreneur has done it on their own. 7. Most successful entrepreneurs do not adopt a #scaleup programme. 8. There is one skill that most successful entrepreneurs never delegate. 9. Happipreneurship is a philosophy which has been proven over thousands of years. 10. Kanya King CBE is my inspiration, and Tim Campbell wrote the introduction to "The Happipreneur", but Charles Dickens is probably the greatest happipreneur of all time (the GHOAT). Book It (Oct. 2024 to Oct 2025) or Be Sad 😎
Calling all you lovely self-employed, enterprising people. This man is a lighthouse, shining brightly for individuals like you. Tony Robinson OBE holds the floor at venues ranging from a local pub to the university lectern. There is so much to learn from him while his intelligence and charisma crackle! Plus, there is *never* a dull moment when he's on the mic. Tony has fought for the underserved in business for decades, providing a practical philosophy in Happipreneurship and embodying true kindness. He boldly told the nation that #MicroBizMatters... And now, it's his final ever speaking tour. It was lots of fun and a real honour to create Tony's last speaking engagement menu. Don't miss out — take a look and book ASAP if you want to experience his rallying cry in a place near you. 🏔 A king, a boulder and a Zen story: Our Chamber’s mission in 2025 🏔 I recently came across a Zen story that resonates with me... It's about a king who noticed his people growing complacent. To teach them a lesson, he placed a massive boulder on the main road, blocking the city’s entrance. As he watched, people approached the boulder, only to give up after little effort. Days passed until a lone peasant came along. Unlike the others, he didn’t walk away. He kept trying until an idea sparked. He found a sturdy branch in the woods and used it as a lever to move the rock. This story is a powerful reminder of how we can lead our communities. Challenges can often seem like obstacles too big to move. It’s easy to turn a blind eye or get stuck in endless debates. Yet, like the peasant, all it takes is a handful of inspired individuals ready to tackle problems with fresh perspectives and a willingness to collaborate…and maybe even compromise. As we gear up for our Annual Luncheon, I’m inspired by this story and its lessons. As a Chamber, we are uniquely positioned to advocate for and support our businesses, while seeking creative solutions for ongoing issues impeding growth in our community. I’m excited about the positive changes we’ll bring in 2025. Let's be the ones who find solutions, leverage our collective strengths and clear the path to progress. Together, we can achieve lasting growth and transformative community building. The question for you is, are you ALL IN like our Chamber is⁉ We hope you'll join us at our Annual Luncheon & Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 14. Registration closes end of day Wednesday. https://lnkd.in/guW2aF7n #communityleadership #leadership #chamberstrong
