Did you know? The Malabo Montpellier Panel has identified a set of policies and practices in its report – Byte-by-Byte: Policy Innovation for Transforming Africa’s Food System with Digital Technologies – that, if brought to scale, could significantly improve the resilience and livelihoods of rural communities and spur overall agricultural growth and transformation in Africa. The Byte-by-Byte report summarizes the key findings of a systematic analysis of what seven African countries at the forefront of progress on digitalization of the agriculture sector have done right. It analyzes which institutional and policy innovations were implemented and what actions were taken by the private sector and agtech start-ups to increase the development and use of digital tools and services in the agriculture value chain. At Uduma we sell water. Pretty simple, right? Yet, the more you look into it, the more complicated it gets. Especially if you want to reach the most remote villages, make it accessible in terms of price, and cover your costs. Turns out, we can't make this work just by being efficient and smart. The institutional framework we operate in makes a big difference. This is what Johannes Wagner will discuss next week. I promise, it will not be an abstract presentation on policy and frameworks. It will be a hands-on discussion, offering private operators in the rural water supply the opportunity to rethink our ambition to scale and provide water for all.
