On Monday (21 October 2024), I defended my thesis “Policy design and professional service delivery performance of drinking water services in rural Mali” at the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford. This marks the end of a rich, at times challenging, journey.
I want to thank my examiners, Dale Whittington and Jim Hall, for their time, interest, and a truly inspiring discussion that pushed my thinking on rural water sustainability. I couldn’t have hoped for a better way to finish this learning journey!
My research offers new empirical insights on service improvements, payment modalities, and contract arrangements for sustaining professional drinking water services in rural Mali. Yet, it also raises a myriad of further questions about the path to rural water sustainability - this is both humbling and motivating.
As I continue to digest and reflect, I would like to thank Katrina Charles, Alex Money, and Dustin Garrick for their important feedback on my work, as well as Sara Merner and Stefania Innocenti for their support with the statistical models.
This research would have not been possible without the constructive partnership with UDUMA, and the incredible teams from Bougouni (Alinta Geling, Youssouf SIDIBE, and Zoumana COULIBALY) and Ingré (Peter Monténégro, Mikael DUPUIS, and Thierry Barbotte).
Finally, it is difficult to imagine I would have gotten to this point without the invaluable guidance of my supervisors, Rob Hope and Johanna Koehler. It was amazing working with you – I will miss it. Thank you!
And now, off to new waters.
