Incremental advances in controlled demos can only go so far. What LiFi urgently requires are ambitious pilot programs and partnerships implementing this connectivity solution across broader societal contexts. Cities could collaborate with LiFi players to enable smart streetlights or districts. Enterprises could deploy building-wide or campus LiFi networks. Transit authorities could integrate LiFi to connect vehicles and stations. These lighthouse models would significantly increase practical understanding and exposure. 2.6 billion people don’t use the internet. What’s stopping them? https://ift.tt/2Gt5Yqp It’s 2035, and the entire world has access to the internet. This means everyone, finally, is able to further their education, access a huge range of jobs, easily start their own business, and find health information that could literally save lives. Here’s how we’ll do it. The digital divide In less than 35 years, we’ve gone from the internet being a fringe technology used by about 3 million people (roughly the population of Chicago) to being an indispensable part of modern life for billions.  So, what’s stopping the 2.6 billion people who still aren’t online from taking advantage of one of the most transformative inventions in all of human history? And, more importantly, how do we overcome those hurdles to ensure everyone, everywhere, is able to join the information superhighway? To find out, let’s take a look at the history of internet connectivity, the challenges to getting everyone online, and how the oldest agency in the United Nations is working to overcome them.  Where we’ve been Where we’re going (maybe) A hundred years before ARPANET, the electric telegraph was the “next big thing” in communication, sending messages long distances far faster than trains and postmen on horseback. Initially, each country had its own telegraph system, though, which caused problems when people tried to send messages across borders, so the International Telegraph Union was created to govern international telegraph networks in Europe. That organization evolved into the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ (UN) specialized agency for information and communication technologies. Just like it helped overcome barriers to the adoption of telegraphs (and, later, telephones, radio, and television), the ITU is now working to close the digital divide by not only ensuring universal access to the internet, but also making sure everyone has the tools they need to take full advantage of it. “Achieving universal and meaningful connectivity — the possibility for everyone to enjoy a safe, satisfying, enriching, productive and affordable online experience — is a top priority for ITU,” Dr. Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, told Freethink. Here’s how it’s working to reach that goal. The coverage gap The first step is ensuring that everyone can get online if they want to, and right now, 5% of the population lives in places that lack access to even mobile networks.   This is known as the “coverage gap,” and according to the ITU, almost everyone who falls on the side of it without internet access lives in a rural area or low-income nation. This is mainly because building the infrastructure needed to connect people to the internet isn’t cheap or easy, especially in remote locations, and internet providers need to believe they’ll have enough customers in an area to make the investment wor...

After tracking NetworkX in Europe for a few years (and got filmed during last year event in Paris, around 1:43 in Network X highlights: Network X - Building Networks for the Telco to Techco Transformation (networkxevent.com)), I've got a chance to investigate North America's communication technology trends in Dallas/Irving, Texas. In accordance with its slogan, "Uniting mobile, fiber and cable to drive telco transformation in North America", there were number of topics very relevant for Deutsche Telekom and Hrvatski Telekom (as its valuable company member).   My major takeaways (over many more): - Implementation of 5G-based new E2E Use Cases (campus, healthcare,…) still not adopted enough, giving us all the task to intensify education of our customers (not about technology but about benefits it could bring for them) + establish new partnerships in realisation & promotion of new solutions; - E2E ecosystem for NT slicing is completed (in certain telcos also up and running), giving opportunity to Telcos in better positioning against its customers, hyperscalers, OTT players; - Most vendors are committed in developing of Open RAN, but its complexity will reduce vendor landscape only on big ones. There are number of its smaller implementations around, but its great adoption will follow in next RAN HW refresh cycle; - Opening of NT, via APIs, to developers and 3rd parties is opportunity in implementation of new use cases, considering poor results of Telcos to develop them on their own.  - 6G is going to require 60% more spectrum then 5G. Therefore, future spectrum allocation should not only be towards licensed & dedicated but also in unlicensed and shared spectrum bands (with existing users of certain bands), combining sensing and communication (ISAC), as great new capability of future 6G networks;   - 6G preparations are not focused only on the development of NT and terminals, but investigate new Use Cases - essential for establishing balance of new investments (needed to deploy 6G) vs new monetisation streams;   As conclusion, the conference was valuable spot to be briefed, inspired and get interested over new trend(s)/solutions(s) of vendors, operators, analysts. This is the key reason to encourage your team members attending such events, to broaden their view on telco business and recognise new trends. Last but not the least, networking was of great value (isn't it all about the people, at the end?) - I've met my colleagues from T-Mobile USA as well as many other experts, executives, presenters,... giving me opportunity to deep-dive in most prominent subjects for our future growth.
