Mobile World Congress, the largest and most influential event for the connectivity ecosystem, took place in Barcelona at the end of February, providing a unique chance for industry leaders to immerse themselves in the latest hot topics and work together to share key takeaways and insights. This year’s event saw a record number of participants – over 101 000 people attended, and, moreover, more than 50% were from verticals - other industries, rather than the traditional telecom sector. On 18th October 2024, I had the opportunity to attend the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024 held in New Delhi, which was held alongside the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly 2024 (WTSA’ 24). This event marked a pivotal moment in the Telecommunications, Media, and Technology (TMT) sector, bringing together global leaders to discuss the future of telecommunication standards and innovations. IMC 2024, running concurrently with WTSA’ 24, witnessed a massive global turnout. The participation ranged from Member States, industries, standardization bodies, academia, and start-ups from around the world. The event served as a key platform for dialogue and collaboration aimed at enhancing the standardization ecosystem in telecommunications and information and communication technologies (ICT). The World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) is a crucial event hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Standardization Sector (ITU-T). WTSA’ 24 focused on standardization across a wide array of telecom and ICT technologies, making it an influential gathering for stakeholders invested in shaping global standards for future technologies. Key Highlights of the event were: • Global Participation and Collaboration: The event saw a diverse range of international delegations, with discussions centered on driving innovation, enhancing interoperability, and building a strong standardization framework for next-gen technologies like 5G/6G,AI,Quantum and IoT. • Focus on Standardization: A major focus was on harmonizing telecom and ICT standards globally, addressing key areas like cybersecurity, satellite communications,spectrum management, and data governance, essential for seamless tech integration like smart mobility. • Opportunities for Start-ups: IMC 2024 provided a platform for start-ups to showcase disruptive technologies and collaborate with industry leaders, highlighting its commitment to fostering innovation, especially in emerging markets. • India’s Role in Global Telecom: India’s growing influence in global telecom was emphasized, as it continues to drive international standards and shape the future of telecommunications. Attending the event provided me with valuable insights into the complexities of global telecom standardization. The interactive sessions and panel discussions highlighted the importance of global cooperation to address the challenges that come with new and emerging technologies. Additionally, the enthusiasm and dedication shown by start-ups in tackling real-world telecom problems were truly inspiring. It was clear that the IMC 2024 was not only about discussing the future of telecom but also about creating actionable pathways for collaboration between established industry players and upcoming innovators.c
