The new patent, titled "Optical structures in directional free-space optical communication systems for portable electronic devices," aims to solve some of the alignment issues with existing free-space optical communication systems. By using specialised optical components and sensors, LiFi connections could work even if devices are not pointed directly at each other.  This could make LiFi a superior wireless solution for data transfers in situations where security and speed are critical. For example, LiFi AirDrop file transfers between iOS devices would be much harder to intercept compared to standard AirDrop over Wi-Fi. China has also recently claimed an ability to obtain sender information from AirDrop. In 2011, The European Lighting and Electrotechnical Components Manufacturers' Federation (CELMA) published a research report comparing the photobiological safety of LED and traditional light sources. Their findings indicated that LED lights are as safe as incandescent and fluorescent bulbs for regular use. Over 12 years later from CELMA report on LED safety and while the initial safety claims are promising, it's crucial to recognise that LiFi is a relatively new technology. As such, there is a need for more comprehensive, long-term and ongoing studies on its potential health impacts. Oledcomm and other players in the LiFi industry have repeatedly stated that light signals are proven to have no negative photobiological effects, making them completely safe from a public health perspective. An important consideration in the development and adoption of LiFi technology is its potential benefit for people with electrohypersensitivity (EHS). EHS is a condition where individuals report a range of non-specific symptoms that they attribute to exposure to electromagnetic fields. Monde Numerique recently invited their guest from OLEDCOMM about LiFi technology. The "Monde Numérique" podcast, created and hosted by journalist Jérôme Colombain, is the essential meeting place to follow the tech news and understand everything about new technologies and innovation. The podcast episode features an interview with Benjamin Azoulay, President of Oledcomm, a French company specialising in LiFi technology. Oledcomm recently participated in an experiment aboard the Ariane 6 rocket launch. The technology aims to replace heavy cable systems in spacecraft and satellites, potentially reducing weight and simplifying spacecraft design. A promising young African student has recently demonstrated a LiFi audio system prototype designed for conference rooms. The project was supervised by Dr Max Fréjus SANYA and produced by William ZANNOU from EGEI UCAO. The prototype leverages Light Fidelity (LiFi) technology, which uses light waves instead of traditional radio frequencies to transmit data. This approach offers several advantages, particularly in reducing interference from other electronic devices commonly found in modern conference environments. On this day, July 09th July 2024, the Ariane 6 rocket has successfully been launched into space. Ariane 6 is the first rocket to integrate LiFi technology. The search for cost and weight reduction is all the more important in the aerospace sector, which is why Arianegroup has decided to embark LiFi among its first experiments on board its new Ariane 6 rocket. Quoted by the Next website, the European Space Agency (ESA) explained that LiFi brings "significant weight savings by eliminating the need for radiation-resistant space-grade cables".
