Calling all non-profit governance nerds.. (I know you're out there... right??): The Netherlands offers a fairly unique (and quite useful) two-tier governance structure for non-profits consisting of a Board AND a Supervisory Board. At Systemic Justice, we've just switched to this model. Now why might one want want to do that? Most non-profits in Europe have a Management Board / Board of Directors as their formal governance entity. Save for small organisations where the Board runs the day-to-day of the organisation, most Boards empower an Executive Director with a power of attorney or appoint a management team to run things. So even though they still hold operational powers, Boards often increasingly move to a position of oversight rather than doing anything hands on. The Dutch system is special in that it allows to formalise this oversight function.
