Marketeers: no matter how old you are, you need to be on TikTok. A little over a year ago I decided that rather than relying on the 'younguns' in my team to tell me about those random trending topics, or explain why we needed to be making a video about corn (IYKYK), I was gonna get out there and get involved myself. I'd spent a long time saying 'I'm too old for TikTok'. I'd spent a long time thinking 'I'm too old to understand TikTok'. And as a 40 year old marketeer that just wasn't good enough. So I started a new account dedicated to my other love, Harry Potter. (Side step, but the Wizarding World is my escapism. I don't really have any vices, but you bet I will spend all my money on HP Lego.) And you know what? It's SO. MUCH. FUN. I've even gone viral a few times and have over 7 million views on a video of me messing about with 'wands' in the park. But what has this taught me? Why is it so vital that every marketeer, no matter your age, is actively participating in TikTok? 1. There's so much 'TikTok culture' that permeates beyond the app. Phrases, sounds and trends that make it into mainstream culture. If you wait for it to become mainstream, and you to see it on your mum's FB, it's too late to capitalise on it. 2. Creativity is at its peak here. I'm constantly blown away by what I see - from content creators, influencers and other brands. There's so much inspiration and it moves so quickly there's always something to spark a fresh idea. 3. It shows respect to those working on the channel. TikTok is a powerhouse that, IMO, is only going to grow further; the opportunity to grow brand awareness and retail is second to none. By being present it shows you value the platform and those working on it. So if you're not already, get on it. Today. Do it. Off you pop. Brands are expanding their social media footprint to go where their consumers are spending more time, showcasing the necessity of a social media manager to be obsessed with their customers/audience. 2. Social media marketers need to always be utilizing data to help make strategic decisions.
