Hugo Barra, who was the Head of Oculus from 2017 to 2020 and a lifelong virtual reality enthusiast, makes the argument in this essay about the Vision Pro and how it compares with not only Meta’s Quest devices, but also with other headsets that are available on the market.
Hugo’s 11,500-word long analysis about the evolving VR market, Vision Pro, and the battle between Apple and Meta should be at the top of your reading list.

“1) Feeling present and connected to your physical world: thanks to a high-fidelity passthrough (“mixed reality”) experience with very low latency, excellent distortion correction (much better than Quest 3), and sufficiently high resolution that allows you to even see your phone/computer screen through the passthrough cameras (i.e. without taking your headset off).
Even though there are major gaps left to be filled in future versions of the Vision Pro hardware (which I’ll get into later), this level of connection with the real world — or “presence” as VR folks like to call it — is something that no other VR headset has ever come even close to delivering and so far was only remotely possible with AR headsets (ex: HoloLens and Magic Leap) which feature physically transparent displays but have their own significant limitations in many other areas. Apple’s implementation of Optic ID as an overlay on top of live passthrough is a beautiful design decision that only enhances this sense of presence.
MY TAKE: The Vision Pro high-fidelity passthrough experience parallels Apple’s introduction of the iPhone’s original retina display, which set a new experience bar and gold standard in mobile display fidelity. While much remains to be improved in the Vision Pro passthrough experience, Apple is unquestionably setting a new standard for all future headsets (by any vendor) that VR passthrough must be good enough to closely resemble reality.”
Truly mesmerizing write-up, Hugo Barra: "#AppleVisionPro is an over-engineered “#devkit” // Hardware bleeds genius & audacity but software story is disheartening // What we got wrong at Oculus VR that Apple got right // Why Meta could finally have its #Android moment."
Also thanks to you, Steven Sinofsky for bringing it to my attention on Twitter/X.
Not a huge #AR/ #VR fan here, but after reading this, I can imagine to give it a try as a toy at least. If not for any other reason, just to experience the sheer compute power sitting on my head: "By all accounts so far, the R1 chip appears to be of a fairly similar package size as the M2 chip (though built using a specialized architecture), which puts the Vision Pro well ahead of any current generation #iPad or #MacBookAir, and likely more on par with a #MacBookPro from a silicon performance perspective. Definitely an impressive achievement by the #AppleSilicon team."

𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗫𝗥 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵? 🚀
Ahead of Google I/O 2024, rumours are circulating that Google might reveal 'Android XR', a new operating system that will power Samsung's upcoming Mixed Reality headset.
Why the speculation (and excitement)?
⌛ Timing. With a Google-Samsung Mixed Reality headset dubbed set for release in late 2024-early 2025, the conference on 14th May could be the ideal stage to unveil Android XR.
This would also allow for the early development of applications ahead of the device's release - similar to what we saw with Apple Vision Pro.
🌐 Growing Ecosystem. The collaborations between Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm shows a shared commitment between some of the biggest players in tech to build a future that leverages immersive technology.
Qualcomm's recently released Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset is also expected to be used in the new device. Its improved performance could allow for some incredible immersive experiences.
📈 Potential. Android XR could further add to the rapidly evolving field of Mixed Reality, which is all about the seamless integration of hardware and software, creating a blend between the physical and digital worlds.
However, amidst the buzz around Android XR, some expect that any XR-related announcement at I/O 2024 could be more about advancements in ARCore or other existing AR features already integrated into Google's suite of applications.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out come May!

At DoubleThink.Studio, we specialise in Spatial Computing, which differs from VR/MR by its ability to track and interact with real-world objects.
The current generation of VR/MR headsets like the Meta Quest 3 & Quest Pro do not share access to the camera and can't track or manipulate existing objects, making them essentially head-mounted PC displays. These devices can only map rooms with basic labels such as door, table, floor, and walls.
The new Apple Vision Pro has a brand new API in visionOS 2, that allows for detailed object tracking and manipulation. (See video below). This enables advanced capabilities, such as rendering graphics over existing real objects as well as interacting with those objects and contextual awareness. We need to scan the object using an iPhone and train an ML model to detect said object.
We do not believe that XR will replace PCs, Tablets or Smartphones but that it will be a new, indispensable tool, for almost all industries, professionals, businesses and education. This can only happen when XR Headsets allow developers to interact with the real world and real world objects, and not just be glorified displays on your head, because you might as well use a tablet/PC. By 2029 you will not remember what life was before Spatial computing.
The future is Screenless?!
Meet the screenless MacBook (well, almost)! Apple's Vision Pro allows you to connect your laptop to a seemingly endless virtual screen.
Need a bigger monitor? No problem. Want a full 360° virtual world? Easy! This is the future Apple is promoting, and it sounds like a productivity dream. And it kinda is...
But, there's a catch. This might actually mean more screen time for your eyes, not less. While a virtual workspace offers incredible flexibility, it's still essentially a screen.
Imagine having a workspace that adapts to your needs with just a few gestures. You can expand your desktop, create immersive environments, and tailor your virtual space to your liking. However, it's important to consider the impact on your eyes. Extended screen time, even in a virtual environment, can lead to eye strain and fatigue.
So, what do you think about this new screenless future? Is it a game-changer for productivity, or are we just trading one type of screen for another?
