If there is any conversation I’ve followed closely this year, it’s the policy requiring students to be 18 years old before taking the JAMB examination and gaining admission into the university. This policy struck a chord with me because the future of many young people and the Nigerian higher education system is hinged on its implementation. One thing that bothers me the most is that there’s no guarantee of an exact graduation date for students entering university at age 18. We are not assured that there won’t be strikes or other unforeseen delays. And before anyone mentions private universities or studying abroad, let’s face it—how many families can afford that? The real concern is what happens when a four-year course stretches into seven years due to delays, and the job market requires candidates to be no older than 25, with at least three years of experience. That’s the harsh reality of today’s labour market. While the intention of this policy may be good, however, our educational system doesn't have the structures to sustain it. My Advice for Parents and Guardians In light of these challenges, I strongly advise parents and guardians to encourage their wards to build experience now, regardless of these academic delays. 💫Let them volunteer. 💫Encourage them to serve as secretaries to executives. 💫Support them in finding internships. 💫Equip them with tech skills and other practical knowledge. In short, encourage them to build experiences that will give them an edge when they eventually graduate. Academic qualifications alone may not be enough in today’s competitive job market, plus the unforeseen delays. Next year, we will see how this policy plays out. In the meantime, position yourselves not to be disadvantaged by it. Even if things don’t go as planned, the experience gained will still be valuable. Today marks one year since I launched 'Jump: Your Roadmap to a Fulfilling University Experience', and what a rewarding journey it has been. I am deeply grateful to everyone who made this dream possible. I am forever grateful to God, my dear father, he does all things well. PS- I would like to know your thoughts too - Adoo Atera #AuthorChangemaker

How can international students access experiential learning, when most internship postings in Canada are for citizens and permanent residents only? Matthew McKean, Chief R&D Officer at BHER, says that work-integrated learning (WIL) programs aimed at international students like the ones led by BHER are essential. “What we’re trying to do is to improve the labour market outcomes of international students, to get them more oriented and point them in the right direction toward careers that they have been trained for.” The hands-on experience and the socio-cultural skills learned at real workplaces can’t be replicated in a classroom, which makes WIL so essential to keeping Canada competitive in retaining highly skilled workers post-graduation. https://lnkd.in/gxeqeAmf #InternationalStudents #ExperientialLearning #WorkIntegratedLearning
