The threat of an #mpox pandemic has emerged again, with new cases every day and two emergency declarations in effect for the African continent and for the world. As my colleagues Lawrence Gostin, Sam Halabi and I wrote today in the The New York Times, urgent, coordinated action is needed to stop the spread — especially the equitable sharing of vaccines to countries currently affected. Covid-19 and too many health emergencies before that have taught us that complacency and delayed action pose a threat to all of us. #VaccineEquity, #GlobalHealthLaw O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law

WHO declares mpox a "global public health emergency", again ... What does this even mean? A global health emergency sounds really scary, surely, they are shutting down travel and putting up quarantines and ... "WHO’s highest level of alert, and it can accelerate research, funding and international public health measures and co-operation to contain the disease." but instead, we only get "CDC has also issued an advisory for people traveling to the DRC and its neighboring countries" the words we choose matter, if we say something is a global emergency but don't treat it as such, the next time we have a global emergency people won't care. we can all think of 100's of things gov't did wrong during covid, lets create better systems in order to get better results, because there will be a next time ...

Current mpox outbreak recognized as a global public health emergency The World Customs Organization (WCO) closely monitors the recent developments regarding the current mpox outbreak with a view to ensuring that WCO Members with public health and safety responsibilities are properly informed about the situation and are involved in national response strategies. At the level of borders, many WCO Members play an important role in national response strategies to mitigate epidemic-related public health and safety risks. In this context, it is of utmost importance that Customs administrations with health and safety responsibilities are adequately integrated as part of the preparedness and response mechanisms. Read WCO’s statement below and access WCO’s Resolution on the Role of Customs in facilitating the cross-border movement of situationally critical medicines and vaccines as well as other links. #mpox #emergency #publichealth #customs

#Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is in the news again. With cases now being reported in Sweden and Thailand--far from the current outbreak's epicenter in the Democratic Republic of the Congo--the WHO has declared the second global health emergency for mpox in less than three years. How worried should you be? Will air travel make spread more likely? Are there enough mpox vaccines in stock in the U.S.? Why do kids under 15 comprise the highest percentage of new cases? And what are global health agencies doing right now to contain mpox and help those at highest risk? Seasoned health journalist Elizabeth Millard reports answers to your mpox questions for #HealthCentral. https://lnkd.in/eXKHZk6T

#UPDATE: WHO Declares Mpox Global Health Emergency, Warns of Further Spread The mpox outbreak that has spread to at least thirteen African countries and killed more than five hundred people constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared yesterday. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said its “potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying.” Scientists have determined that the current version circulating in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries is more deadly than the one that prompted a similar emergency declaration in July 2022. That outbreak killed around two hundred people. Yesterday’s WHO declaration followed the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s on Tuesday that mpox constituted a continental health emergency. The 2022 mpox outbreak stayed mostly within tight sexual networks, and a combination of behavior changes and vaccination were able to control it. The version currently circulating is more virulent, according to research. Those most vulnerable include women and children under fifteen. The WHO invited vaccine manufacturers to apply for a special emergency listing that would allow groups to purchase and distribute shots in low-income countries. The Africa CDC estimates that the continent would need around ten million doses to curtail the current outbreak.

Right on time. CDC and White House have warned of a pandemic in late 2024: mPox and Bird Flu. We don't know why but the warnings were widely discussed. Of course, vaccines were developed during past two years "just in case." Recall, this is how it began in 2020. 60-days later, we all know what happened. For CXOs, it's perhaps worth looking at the company's obligations, sourcing, distribution and services commitments. Look at financials. Just in time for our elections. Perhaps nothing but the pattern is quite remarkable. Hopefully the Biden Admin will put no-fly, no-entry policies in place. Especially along our open borders.

To not forget the level of hate, and social injustice reached during the first days of covid, I report here a document: a declaration signed by a group of economists and cynical medical scientists that were suggesting to refuse any lockdown in the hope of quickly reaching herd immunity: a policy that would have costed millions of lives more. Moreover, only those that had privileged positions, and access to top level health care could have advocated for a policy that had strong chances to impact first on the poorest part of the population. https://gbdeclaration.org/

https://lnkd.in/eEQUpNKQ What is added by this report? The increasing number of reported suspected clade I mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) poses a global threat for potential spread. No clade I cases have been reported in countries without endemic transmission. CDC is supporting DRC’s response and containment efforts and ensuring U.S. preparedness by increasing awareness and surveillance, expanding clade I diagnostic testing capacity, and communicating guidance. What are the implications for public health practice? U.S. clinicians and public health practitioners should be alert for possible cases in travelers from DRC and request clade-specific testing. Appropriate medical treatment is critical given the potential for severe illness, and contact tracing and containment strategies, including isolation, behavior modification and vaccination, will be important to prevent spread if any U.S. clade I mpox cases occur.
