https://lnkd.in/eEQUpNKQ What is added by this report? The increasing number of reported suspected clade I mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) poses a global threat for potential spread. No clade I cases have been reported in countries without endemic transmission. CDC is supporting DRC’s response and containment efforts and ensuring U.S. preparedness by increasing awareness and surveillance, expanding clade I diagnostic testing capacity, and communicating guidance. What are the implications for public health practice? U.S. clinicians and public health practitioners should be alert for possible cases in travelers from DRC and request clade-specific testing. Appropriate medical treatment is critical given the potential for severe illness, and contact tracing and containment strategies, including isolation, behavior modification and vaccination, will be important to prevent spread if any U.S. clade I mpox cases occur.

Rigorous research shows #CHWs can safely and effectively deliver a wide range of primary health care services, as diverse as administering injectable contraceptives to providing diagnosis and treatment for pneumonia, malaria, and other infectious diseases. Yet, despite widespread acceptance that CHWs are an essential component of the healthcare workforce, the 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) Guideline on Health Policy and System Support to Optimize Community Health Worker Programmes revealed several big gaps in the evidence about which health system design best practices lead to quality care. To address this concern, and advance our mission of making professional CHWs (proCHWs) the norm worldwide, we set up a data harmonization collaborative (the Collaborative) to help close critical evidence gaps about CHW program design and implementation. A national strategic plan (NSP) for a Disease is a document that guides national authorities and stakeholders on how to comprehensively address epidemics through interventions within the health sector and across other sectors. The NSP for TB is a critical step for ensuring that TB response at country level reflects the changing context at national, regional and global level. This course has been very interesting as it highlighted the different phases involved in the development of the NSP for TB and the 3 main components of a TB NSP. It also highlights the importance of government stewardship and ownership, promotes alignment with national health strategy and other health programmes .It incorporates new guidelines, tools and approaches to TB programming , planning and lessons learned. I will recoomend this course to health practitioners directly or indirectly involved in the TB program. On 14 August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) for the second time in two years This follows an upsurge of cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa. Globally, there is also an increase in mpox cases, and Singapore is not spared. Singapore had 18 reported cases in 2022 and 32 cases in 2023. Although infections are usually mild, patients can die from mpox - the fatality rate is reported to be around 3-6%. As such we should remain vigilant and take precautions. Mpox can spread in different ways, including respiratory secretions and through close and sexual contact with a person with mpox. As such, reducing or avoiding behaviors that increase risk of mpox exposure and vaccination are two most important ways to prevent the spread of mpox. #mpox #publichealth #WHO

Strengthening Public Health Surveillance in Nigeria Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) is a game-changer in public health. By streamlining multiple disease surveillance systems into one cohesive strategy, IDSR helps health facilities and governments detect and respond more effectively to outbreaks and public health emergencies. In Nigeria, where infectious diseases remain a significant health burden, IDSR enhances the ability to analyze and act on critical health data. With tools like eIDSR (SORMAS) and One Health approaches, we can strengthen the flow of information and improve responses at all levels of the healthcare system. The goal? Save lives by ensuring early detection, timely reporting, and actionable insights. Let’s continue to champion initiatives like IDSR to build a more resilient public health system!

WHO has just determined that the growing number of mopx in African countries and the detection of a new rapidly spreading variant constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR). It is necessary to consider that despite what we have already experienced, we are still without a true Global Pandemic Agreement while the priorities of health in the World remains the same. It is necessary to invest in Public Health to be able to provide adequate responses, as well as increase diagnostic capacity, along with the implementation of the programs and the protocols to support the treatment and the vaccination. The Public Health must closely monitor the global and local epidemiological situation to be able to anticipate responses.
