Strengthening Public Health Surveillance in Nigeria Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) is a game-changer in public health. By streamlining multiple disease surveillance systems into one cohesive strategy, IDSR helps health facilities and governments detect and respond more effectively to outbreaks and public health emergencies. In Nigeria, where infectious diseases remain a significant health burden, IDSR enhances the ability to analyze and act on critical health data. With tools like eIDSR (SORMAS) and One Health approaches, we can strengthen the flow of information and improve responses at all levels of the healthcare system. The goal? Save lives by ensuring early detection, timely reporting, and actionable insights. Let’s continue to champion initiatives like IDSR to build a more resilient public health system!

We surveyed African healthcare providers to understand better the most significant medical conditions affecting them and their patients. We received responses from clinicians in 37 countries across the continent. Additionally, we examined the World Health Organization’s list of infectious and non-infectious diseases responsible for most deaths in Africa, aiming to identify priority diseases that require control and treatment. https://lnkd.in/dDA86ZuX WHO declares mpox a global public health emergency for second time in two years Aug 15, 2024, 07:39 AM GENEVA - The World Health Organisation on Aug 14 declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak of the viral infection in Democratic Republic of Congo that has spread to neighbouring countries. An emergency committee met earlier on Aug 14 to advise WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on whether the disease outbreak constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern,” or PHEIC. PHEIC status is WHO’s highest level of alert and aims to accelerate research, funding and international public health measures and cooperation to contain a disease.

On 14 August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) for the second time in two years This follows an upsurge of cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa. Globally, there is also an increase in mpox cases, and Singapore is not spared. Singapore had 18 reported cases in 2022 and 32 cases in 2023. Although infections are usually mild, patients can die from mpox - the fatality rate is reported to be around 3-6%. As such we should remain vigilant and take precautions. Mpox can spread in different ways, including respiratory secretions and through close and sexual contact with a person with mpox. As such, reducing or avoiding behaviors that increase risk of mpox exposure and vaccination are two most important ways to prevent the spread of mpox. #mpox #publichealth #WHO

🚨Humanitarian update: WHO declare Mpox global health emergency 🌐 🦠Formerly known as monkeypox, this highly contagious disease initially broke out in the Democratic Republic of Congo where at least 13,700 cases were recorded and 450 lives were taken, since the start of the year. Now spreading across central and east Africa, the new variant is escalating fast and has a high fatality rate which is creating many unknowns. 🦺Efforts to contain and eliminate the threat of this new variant must be proactive and aggressive. The two main strains of the virus are Clade I and Clade Ib which is the most dangerous yet. Symptoms are flu-like, skin lesions which can be fatal and 4 in 100 cases lead to death! 💥Immediate steps must be taken to contain the disease. 🔗Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/euD_SAPc 🔗For more information read Evidence Aid article on Monkeypox: https://lnkd.in/e2cGydnQ

https://lnkd.in/eEQUpNKQ What is added by this report? The increasing number of reported suspected clade I mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) poses a global threat for potential spread. No clade I cases have been reported in countries without endemic transmission. CDC is supporting DRC’s response and containment efforts and ensuring U.S. preparedness by increasing awareness and surveillance, expanding clade I diagnostic testing capacity, and communicating guidance. What are the implications for public health practice? U.S. clinicians and public health practitioners should be alert for possible cases in travelers from DRC and request clade-specific testing. Appropriate medical treatment is critical given the potential for severe illness, and contact tracing and containment strategies, including isolation, behavior modification and vaccination, will be important to prevent spread if any U.S. clade I mpox cases occur.

Mpox has been declared a public health emergency in Africa. What is it and what’s the WHO doing? The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared this week that the increasing spread of mpox across the continent is a health emergency, warning the virus might ultimately spill across international borders. On Wednesday, the World Health Organization is convening its own expert meeting to consider making a similar emergency declaration over mpox. So far, more than 96% of all cases and deaths are in a single country Congo. Scientists are concerned by the spread of a new version of the disease there that might be more easily transmitted among people. Here’s a look at what we know about mpox, and what might be done to contain it Mpox, also known as monkeypox, was first identified by scientists in 1958 when there were outbreaks of a “pox-like” disease in monkeys. Until recently, most human cases were seen in people in central and west Africa who had close contact with infected animals. In 2022, the virus was confirmed to spread via sex for the first time and triggered outbreaks in more than 70 countries that had not previously reported mpox. Most of those infected were gay and bisexual men. 2wThank you FAIZAH OSEZE SANI for highlighting this. In the past, there were disease surveillance and notification officers who collected data with paper tools and were gradually trained with the LGA M&E Officers to report on DHIS2. However, with the eIDSR, it is expected that there would be increased data availability, coincidentally, the parallel health data management systems have made it popular but in a certain circle. With the One Health approach I hope disease notification, surveillance and data management will also be prioritized.
