As RFK Jr. takes the reins at HHS, 2025 could mark a pivotal year for health communications. In an era where public health narratives are shaped often by platforms like TikTok rather than by the CDC, the need for science-backed education has never been greater. Patients are increasingly using social media to self-educate, which makes clear, compelling, and evidence-driven storytelling critical. And yes, some of this will be from corporations/brands but at the end of the day we will have to lean on trusted voices. I see certified physicians and patient-led communities playing hero roles in bridging the gap between credible data and accessible communication. Companies like MedFluencers and Savvy Cooperative are already leading the charge, proving that health literacy and authenticity can coexist on these platforms. With rare disease communities already demonstrating how empowered, knowledgeable patients can drive better outcomes, could this become the evolving model for all healthcare communications?

#Rockfordians, my colleague Rachel León is seeking submissions for The Rockford Anthology as a part of Belt Publishing's city anthology series. Please share the submission guidelines with anyone you think might be interested in contributing: We want your Rockford story. We’re building a collection of stories written by current or former residents of Rockford, Illinois, offering a snapshot of the city. Stories can take different forms: essays, poems, photos, hybrid work. Rockford is full of history. There’s triumph: Bing Liu’s Minding the Gap and Fred VanVleet’s NBA championship win. On the Waterfront and South Main Mercado. Cheap Trick and Michelle Williams. But also injustices and tragedy: the People Who Care race discrimination lawsuit. Mark Anthony Barmore’s murder by police at the House of Grace daycare. The faces behind reports that Rockford continually has a higher per capita crime rate than Chicago. Share your stories of pride in this city. Or your shame. Memories of growing up in Rockford—from your involvement in the arts and music scene to your old schools. What would you tell someone who has never been here? Where would you show them? Would you tell them any city history or local folklore? We want stories of dreams and disappointment. How have you reckoned with the crime impacting your neighborhood? What are your frustrations about the city? What about your hopes for the future? Do you have a local hero, your favorite neighborhood, or a place that holds meaning? Is there a memory that defines your Rockford experience? A moment of fear so stark it still wakes you up at night? A day of joy so intense that it can still make you laugh throughout the day? To accurately capture this city, we need a variety of voices. We are actively seeking work from people of all ages, abilities, gender identities, sexualities, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds who have personal connections to Rockford. News organizations seem to be crying "do as I say, not as I do." Admittedly, I'm somewhat amused by the conundrum media companies find themselves in. NPR, The New York Times and NBC News have all been in the news lately for related issues. Traditionally, their bread-and-butter (and mine when I was a journalist) has been to get disgruntled employees to discuss issues inside companies to bring to public attention. That often includes people who've been fired or get fired for speaking to the press without permission. But when these issues are related to their own organizations, these aggressive practices are just fine? Believe me, I've worked as a business reporter as well as at non-media companies so I've lived both sides of this issue. But there is a certain hypocrisy attached to a business model that relies on others breaking ranks and disclosing issues when they squash their own employees for doing the same. So what's the answer? On both sides of the equation, it's a willingness to listen to the concerns of employees and leaders throughout an organization and see where gaps may exist and fixes can be applied. It is true what Brian McGrory of Boston University says that news companies "can't be run by a committee of a thousand." But these are not your stereotypical businesses that can and should use strong-arm tactics to keep the newsroom in line. Reporters, by definition, are conditioned to succeed by doing the exact opposite. #media #leaks #PR #leadership
