I WAS ATTACKED LAST NIGHT! Last night I was minding my own business, spending some time with my 6-month-old baby when my phone went off with notifications on all social channels! Bryan MacDonald fired some shots at Jordan West and me about TikTok Shop. While I will agree, the amount of content I see regarding TikTok Shop can be slightly annoying at times, it still is a major opportunity for many brands (not all). For BattlBox, it's not as straightforward as it is for some, but I still believe it can be a 7 figure (annually) sales channel for us. 90% of our revenue comes from our subscription/membership offering. You cannot sell subscriptions/memberships on TikTok Shop. The good news is that we have over 1000 SKUs that we can sell in a one-time capacity. The reality is most of those are not a fit for the TikTok Shop. We have been constantly testing products for the platform, with the goal of trying to find 5 flagship products that can all have nice sales velocity. Yes, the AOV is significantly less than other platforms (regular one-time order AOV for us is over $100 and it's $25 on TikTok Shop). The margin is the same though as other third-party marketplaces. The special sauce of TikTok Shop is the ability for the algo to push a good video and get it more eyeballs than other platforms. As of right now, YTD, TikTok show is our second largest third-party marketplace (out of 8). Yes, Amazon is in the #1 spot. No, TikTok is probably not going to catch up. You've really got to know what you're doing if you're selling on TikTok Shop. That means listening to people like Enda Breslin of ShipBob. At the moment, TikTok Shop is a massive opportunity for brands. But that might not always be the case. So, as Enda says, it's important to spread your products across platforms that you're more used to, as well, like Shopify or Amazon. TikTok is selective about Shop products, so Enda's advice about selecting a small number of hero products for TikTok, while diversifying your strategy into Shopify and Amazon is hugely valuable. Unpopular Opinion Alert! 🚨 TikTok is not just a social media platform anymore. It's an e-commerce titan in its own right. 🛍️ The latest TikTok Shop Safety Report reveals a dramatic surge in merchant numbers. There were more than 500,000 active sellers on the platform by end of 2023, double the figure from just three months earlier. Here's where it gets interesting. 🎯 TikTok Shop expanded globally, reaching over 15 million sellers worldwide. They invested a whopping $400m in platform safety, employing a team of 7,500 dedicated professionals. Don't be fooled by the numbers though. TikTok Shop is not a free-for-all. They onboarded 6 million sellers, but also declined 2 million registrations. A staggering 37 million products were blocked from listing for not meeting TikTok's policies. But the real eye-opener? TikTok Shop is approaching $4 billion in annual revenue. The most popular items sell at staggering rates. Who would have guessed that a $7.50 mouthwash alternative would be the bestseller, with 1.6 million unit sales totaling over $11.9m? Now, here's the kicker. 🥊 Despite the influx of low-quality and counterfeit products, TikTok's revenue rose from $261m to $349m between October and December 2023. Although sales stagnated between January and February 2024, the potential is clear. Here's my contrarian take: TikTok might just be the next big thing in e-commerce. THIS IS JUST THE START 🤯🤯🤯 Amazon has penned a deal with TikTok to link accounts so you can buy products from your Amazon store without leaving the TikTok app We all know how crucial it is to entice your potential customers to buy your product there and then because people don't want to disrupt the flow of consuming content TikTok obviously knew this with the launch of TikTok Shop and have now made it even easier for brands to get on the social commerce wagon! TikTok has said in its press release that once TikTok and Amazon accounts are linked Amazon customers are able to complete a checkout with Amazon in the product ad without leaving the TikTok app—enabling a faster, more frictionless experience. So the downside... it looks like this is only available in the US currently and it's only available via an advertising placement rather than organic - but it's a start and an absolutely huge partnership in the world of social commerce.
