This mornings update: AWS s3 can quickly become a little more $$$ than expected To quote Maciej Poćwierz: "Another question was bugging me: why was over half of my bill coming from the us-east-1 region? I didn’t have a single bucket there! The answer to that is that the S3 requests without a specified region default to us-east-1 and are redirected as needed. ICYMI, DynamoDB now supports resource-based policies. Most people (myself included) focused on the cross-account use case this allows, but another use case is perhaps even more valuable. You can create "private" DynamoDB tables that are accessible only from within your VPCs. Previously, you could do this with Service Control Policies (SCPs), and I explained how to do it in a blog post (see link in comment). But that requires AWS Organizations and more work. Resource-based policies is much easier. There are still cases where you might prefer the SCP approach. For example, in an environment where InfoSec owns the AWS Organization and landing zones, but the dev team owns the application. It's easier for InfoSec to enforce that all DynamoDB tables must be accessed from within a VPC.

Hey everyone! In my last post about cloud networking vs. traditional data centers and being a trusted advisor vs. just a seller, a few folks reached out asking, “Igor, what did you mean?” Well, let me break it down. Cloud networking isn’t all that different. It’s just done right. Remember the days of the VMware stack with vSwitch or dVS? Back then, the advice from VMware SEs and SAs was that we could solve everything with vMotion, even in active/active data centers designs. Hmmm did some used parallel so called swimming lanes - i.e. 2 parallel application stacks? They preached, “Just use vMotion,” and unfortunately a lot of people believed it. Stretching L2 domains across DCs? We all know the disasters that caused. But in the cloud, there are no L2 domains. Why? Because applications are finally done right. I don’t worry about IP address changes anymore—thanks to dynamic FQDN. This should’ve been the norm all along, even in traditional environments. Fast forward to today.
