ELOQUI TIP OF THE WEEK: UNIVERSAL SOLVENT You probably won’t be surprised that the most well-respected authors at the recent Santa Fe Literary Festival advocated for the importance of storytelling. But as we listened to their various approaches, we thought of the applications of case studies to our clients’ businesses. For example: “A story is a pebble in your shoe,” said Julia Alvarez (The Cemetery of Untold Stories.) When networking to develop partnerships and referrals, embedding your differentiators and values in a story will make you stick in a listener’s memory. The same goes for your website. Rather than listing a menu of services, write a brief anecdote. Better yet, have your clients describe the problem you solved for them, and the steps you took. Stories demonstrate your worth and will be passed on. As Anthony Doerr (All the Light We Cannot See) said, “A story is a way of stretching time.” Be artful and precise with your stories. We welcome Dr. William M. Baum to the World Behavior Analysis Day podcast! Dr. Baum has made significant contributions to the field of behavior analysis. He has authored numerous influential journal articles covering a wide array of topics, from laboratory research to philosophical explorations. Two of his most widely cited papers are (1) the empirical and theoretical analysis of choice behavior, which he authored with Rachlin (1969 and 1974). In addition, he has written general philosophical works on behaviorism, focusing on biology and evolution. A consistent contributor to ABAI conventions, he has published 64 quality papers and is an invited presenter for the 2024 Association for Behavior Analysis International.   In this insightful conversation, we explore the concepts of molar and molecular behavior, discuss some of his memories of B.F. Skinner, and dive into Dr. Baum's latest book, "Introduction to Behaviorism: An Evolutionary Perspective." We also touch upon how Eastern philosophies have influenced his perspective on behaviorism. When I talk about Ubuntu in business, it is NOT from the place of deep cultural grounding and experience like for Shayla Sima Dube. Ubuntu is the spiritual, ontological, epistemological water in which she swims. As a white woman from the U.S., I point to Ubuntu philosophy as a way to illuminate what is missing from the water in which I grew up. My worldview was shaped by the concepts (dare I say, myths) of individualism, meritocracy, survival of the fittest, and competition. If we want an experience of work and how we lead to be one of unleashing human potential and not extractive dehumanization, we need different lenses, different models, different ways of understanding. Ubuntu makes way for individual contribution that uplifts the whole. Ubuntu is easy to relate to because it taps into what everyone wants: Strong, resilient, caring communities where we all belong and thrive. The hard part is to unlearn the programming of individualism, hierarchy, and control. Generic self-development coaching is hardly comparable to Emotional Intelligence executive coaching for leadership or physician burnout. For executive coaching services procured by organizations like Loudoun County, the payee (coaching firm) typically proposes pricing structures and rates, which the contracting organization negotiates and agrees upon. Specifically, the RFP requires the coaching firm to provide the cost to administer 360 leadership assessments for around 100 leaders. Cost for group assessment interpretation sessions for groups of up to 20 leaders Hourly rate for individual coaching services. The organization will be billed for any other expenses. This indicates that while the coaching firm proposes pricing, the contracting organization has the final say in determining reasonable rates for the required services. The results do not explicitly differentiate between life coaching for personal development and executive/leadership coaching. However, it is sensible to expect pricing structures to differ based on the coaching objectives, target audience, and specific services provided. Organizations would likely negotiate appropriate rates commensurate with the value and complexity of the coaching engagement. In summary, while the payee (coaching firm) can propose pricing, the contracting organization ultimately determines reasonable rates for the coaching services based on their requirements and budget constraints. In contrast, generic coaching for personal development is unlikely to produce the level of income that is typical for niche coaching for leadership, burnout or disruptive behavior.
