Our Duncan was our man on the ground at yesterday's Institute of Internal Communication conference in Manchester. We asked him what his top three takeaways from the day were: 1. Give your employees autonomy. janet leighton Director of Happiness, Timpsons Limited explained how they operate an ‘Upside Down’ Management structure so all their retail colleagues have licence to run the retail outlets in the want as long as it leads to strong customer service. And to know they have the full support of the rest of the business.   2. Capture the diversity of voice. Ian MacArthur, Director Good Employment Charter talked about the importance of accommodating diverse working styles and the needs of different generational types.   3. Constantly ask yourself: ‘What’s the point in doing this activity or piece of communication?’ Northern Trains, Luke Pearce CIIC, Employee Experience Manager reminded us that understanding the status quo through data and research is easy but ‘Taking it, communicating and acting on it is the hard bit. The IOIC conference in Manchester was a great opportunity to continue my professional development in the comms space. I specifically enjoyed the EDI panel, and learned so much from the speakers. Hearing from comms teams on stage and in the audience about the real challenges they face has given me greater clarity on how Prologue Communications can better support our clients. Some of the key themes that came out of the discussion were: - How do we overcome change fatigue and resistance within our audiences? - How can comms teams be more strategic than responsive in their function? - How to build a culture of trust? - How do organisations communicate their perspective on global issues? - How can comms teams better handle the volume of information needing to reach colleagues? I highly recommend my network to join the IOIC, and be part of the conversation, and hopefully I'll see you at another event in the near future. #comms #IOIC #change #changecommunication

This protocol is a type of therapeutic breathing technique designed to induce altered states of consciousness without the use of substances. Do you have a no D!£%head policy? Turns out it’s good for business. Yesterday I had the privilege of listening to the Chair of the Welsh Rugby Union Richard Collier-Keywood talk eloquently about the important Welsh cultural asset he is now responsible for and the need for it to serve all stakeholders i.e. benefit society beyond the bottom line. In business it’s known as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) which emerged as a concept in the 1960s. Back then it was seen as an altruistic means of doing more with a business than just making money, but it was assumed it would involve sacrificing profit to achieve it. The growing evidence shows this is not the case. Being environmentally responsible, inclusive and serving of all stakeholders (customers, employees, investors, the environment and wider society) builds a strong brand, customer engagement, profit and also investment opportunities. The All Blacks have an NDH (No D!£%head) policy. They clean their own dressing rooms, carry their own bags and essentially show humility, accountability and a recognition of all the stakeholders in their organisation. For me, corporate social responsibility boils down to common sense, respect and humility. It’s good to see those leading our national game going forward aspire to the same ethos. And at a time of such high attrition in business in general, would it not be best to have a smart business model that ensures that everyone in the eco system is incentivised to see the venture succeed?
