You're leading a team with diverse communication styles. How can you evaluate them objectively and fairly?
As a leader, I prioritize open communication using various channels (Slack, text, meetings, etc.) and set clear expectations from the start. My focus is on ensuring consistent communication, leading by example, and staying flexible. I assess whether I'm setting reasonable standards and remain mindful of different communication styles to ensure everyone feels valued. Personality assessments can help teams work better together but shouldn't be over-relied on, as they can isolate those who differ. The key is to stay open, ask questions, and leverage each team member's strengths.

Your team is burning out trying to balance work and life. How can you support them effectively?
Some workplaces create this environment and some employees create it for themselves. Either way - it's about knowing your team, being available for them, and proactively offering support and solutions. In these situations, I remind team members of our priorities and create space for conversations about where and how they should be spending their time. All seems basic, but overall project management can can get away from leaders quickly if they're not maintaining a steady drumbeat with clear direction.

Dealing with conflicting communication styles in your virtual team. How can you bridge the gap effectively?
This is an important component. Team norms must be learned over time. There will always be pushback and hesitation. Set expectations so team members know the cadence, channels and content to expect. Be open to feedback and changing these based on what works best for everyone, but also don’t be afraid to set a standard. I’ve seen team members adapt to new technology after they’ve realized email was no longer the preferred way to communicate messages to the entire team.

You're facing resistance from team members during a change initiative. How can you win their support?
I agree with this recommendation. It’s important to keep the lines of communication open and honest. Team members may not always like the change and may disagree with the reasoning behind it, but most will appreciate timely, clear and consistent communication about it. I always put myself in the shoes of my audience and ask all the questions I’d want to ask. Including FAQs in messaging to anticipate or address what’s been circulated in side discussions helps too.

Launched in September 2018, the campaign promoted the SFPUC’s long history of providing clean energy to San Francisco through Hetch Hetchy Power. Three mobile tricycle sno-cone machines stationed across the City offered residents a rainbow of “Power-ful” flavors like “Hetch Hetchy hibiscus” and “renewable raspberry.” Banners depicting buildings and services powered by Hetch Hetchy Power provided an opportunity to engage residents about the SFPUC’s work while they enjoyed the icy treats. A key goal of the campaign was to generate buzz with new audiences and maximize reach beyond in-person interactions. Using a combination social promotion, videos, brand ambassadors and influencers, the campaign generated over 385,900 impressions! And, we’re proud to say, this was the first time that the SFPUC was featured in EaterSF!
Through this quirky, innovative campaign, the SFPUC positioned itself as a forward-thinking public agency, while spreading awareness of its long history of providing clean power to San Francisco. -
