"In recent years, the United Nations (UN) designated terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a group with links to the Pakistani security establishment, has been pursuing a strategy of political transition. This paper explores whether existing counter-terrorism frameworks such as the UN-led disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) and state-led de-radicalization and disengagement programs adequately explain the transition of terrorist organizations into the political arena."

The twofold increase in the number of BRICS members – with more hopefuls waiting in a queue – indicates growing discontent with the international political and financial systems, which, many believe, protect the geopolitical interests of the “developed few” with scant regard for the “developing majority.” The bloc’s rapid expansion is a wake-up for the US to embrace a more equitable global governance system. A few months back I wrote on changes in the media landscape over the last 25 years for Aurora: What compelled General Musharraf to liberalise the news media and allow private television channels to proliferate – something his democratically elected predecessor, Nawaz Sharif, was too afraid to permit? It certainly was not his love for the free flow of news or freedom of expression. The change in the media environment was dictated by a confluence of multiple factors. The first and foremost were the rapid changes taking place in media and broadcasting technologies across the world which made it near-impossible, even for a military dictator, to control or stop the inflow of unfiltered information from the ‘outside’. At the same time, the transformation of the state-controlled economy into one driven by market forces and mass consumption, a process that began in the early nineties and quickened under Musharraf following the privatisation of public businesses and massive private (local and foreign) investments in the consumer goods, automobile manufacturing, telecom and financial sectors, had led to the expansion of the middle class. The influx of large amounts of foreign multilateral and bilateral assistance (mainly from the US and Europe) in exchange for Pakistan’s support in the War on Terror, as well as growth in home remittances, further bolstered consumer spending. While the expanding middle classes linked with the outside world either through foreign television channels or friends and family, or the consumption of imported goods, and helped create a demand for the free flow of information, the private sector needed new mass advertising channels to reach out to potential consumers in order to sell their mobile phones, automobiles, beauty products, home appliances, personal loans, credit cards and other assorted products. https://lnkd.in/dPFdUAVS

Hindus in Bangladesh are enduring severe and systematic violence following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the country's former Prime Minister. The violence, reportedly orchestrated by Jamaat-e-Islami gangs, has engulfed at least 27 districts, where Hindu homes, businesses, and temples are being ruthlessly targeted. Reports have emerged of Hindu girls going missing, temples being desecrated, and men being lynched and hung in the streets as acts of intimidation and terror. The violence began on August 5th, 2024, coinciding with Sheikh Hasina's departure to India, and has since escalated into a campaign of terror against the Hindu minority. Despite the clear and targeted nature of these attacks, much of mainstream media has downplayed or even rationalized the violence. This narrative is deeply problematic. Mainstream media shift the focus away from the systematic persecution of a minority group and instead portray the fatalities as collateral damage in a broader political struggle. This kind of reporting not only fails to convey the reality of the situation on the ground but also dangerously minimizes the scale and severity of the attacks. The broader issue here is the lack of objectivity in mainstream media reporting. The role of the media is to report the truth, to convey what is actually happening on the ground, and to hold those in power accountable. However, when media outlets choose to selectively report or whitewash events, they fail in their duty to inform the public accurately and impartially. This lack of objectivity not only distorts public perception but also undermines the very principles of journalism. In the case of the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, the failure of certain media outlets to report the truth has serious consequences. By downplaying the religiously motivated attacks on minority groups, they contribute to a culture of impunity, where such violence can continue unchecked and unchallenged. Isn't it integral that the media upholds its responsibility to report the facts as they are, without bias or ideological slant, especially in situations where human lives and communities are at stake?! The impact of a Dharna (protest) on Imran Khan and the government can vary widely depending on the scale, public support, and governmental response. Protests can sometimes galvanize support for political leaders, but they can also lead to increased tensions and crackdowns, depending on the situation. It's important to analyze the specific context, current political climate, and public sentiment to understand the potential effects accurately. PEACE By Hassanatu Kamara Peace is a universal requirement for individuals, environments, countries, and the world at large. It signifies freedom from disturbance, tranquility, and harmony. Importantly, peace also refers to a state or period in which there is no war. Peace serves as a crucial pathway to prevent inequity and violence. It is, without a doubt, a golden ticket to a new and brighter future for humanity. Each individual plays an essential role in fostering a more equitable and peaceful world. Both the Holy Quran and the Holy Bible emphasize the essence of peace. One of God’s names in the Quran is As-Salaam, which means peace. In verse 56:25-26, it assures believers: “Therein they will hear no abusive speech, nor talk of sin, only the saying, Peace, peace.” Similarly, in the Bible, John 14:27 states: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Despite the teachings of these holy texts, our world continues to face numerous atrocities, such as violence driven by the pursuit of power, money, and fame. Too often, people prioritize their desires over the feelings and needs of others. The Earth grapples with a myriad of unsettling issues, including conflict, kidnapping, nuclear threats, political turmoil, violent protests, and environmental degradation due to pollution and natural disasters. Humanity often creates a chaotic environment for selfish reasons, even when aware that their actions could lead to unrest. Moreover, before we can promote the idea of peace to others, we must cultivate it within ourselves. Achieving peace is a collective responsibility, requiring contributions from all individuals, not just a select few. History has shown us that peace plays a vital role in ending wars and preventing various forms of violence. It is only after enduring the devastation of countless wars that humanity has come to appreciate the true essence of peace for our survival. While war destroys and disrupts, peace builds, strengthens, and restores. Moreover, peace extends to personal well-being, helping individuals achieve security and avoid anxiety and chaos, ultimately leading to improved lives. The importance of peace cannot be overstated, as there are hardly any disadvantages to having peace reign. Peace fosters dialogue among individuals regarding matters that affect them most, and it is the foundation upon which nations establish conflict resolution committees. The undeniable truth is that the world cannot progress without the implementation of peace. In conclusion, to maintain and nurture the peace that already exists in the world, we must strive to smile at others and at situations, regardless of circumstances, whether they are different, angry, or unhappy. We must cultivate forgiveness and acceptance, respect and tolerate every living being, and resolutely reject any form of violence. Happy International Peace Day

Protests over the war in Gaza are spreading to campuses around the country. For journalists, deciding how and why to cover local protests requires some high-level news judgment. Just showing up and documenting the fact that a protest is happening will most likely leave your audience annoyed and confused. Instead, newsrooms need to identify a tight journalistic focus for every single story they do. And then they need to judge every piece of information in that story against the focus. Otherwise, news stories about protests end up being a random set of facts, opinions, and assertions.
