Protests over the war in Gaza are spreading to campuses around the country. For journalists, deciding how and why to cover local protests requires some high-level news judgment. Just showing up and documenting the fact that a protest is happening will most likely leave your audience annoyed and confused. Instead, newsrooms need to identify a tight journalistic focus for every single story they do. And then they need to judge every piece of information in that story against the focus. Otherwise, news stories about protests end up being a random set of facts, opinions, and assertions. After hearing from many newsrooms that have experienced some stumbles, I wrote this guidance for journalists who are making editorial decisions about covering protests. https://lnkd.in/e56Dx7pk

Reinforcing the message of ‘Safety First’ as journalists go about the business of keeping Nigerians informed as the Nationwide strike commences. It is important to plan for a violence- free protest but be prepared in the event that it turns ugly. Heroics when a protest turns ugly can be of grave consequence - what is important is capturing the video of the protest, the ambience and anything that will grab headlines. Let’s remember the duty reposed in us to strike a balance, objectivity and the ability to call out false narratives that may incite the populace, endanger our common wealth and pose security challenges. Every citizen has a right to protest (peacefully), what we must never do is to introduce criminality and by extension endanger the life and property of innocent citizens. Nigeria is a resilient nation, endowed with human and material resources. Like every democracy, we are evolving and must hold our leaders to account. That is the power of our voice and vote. As journalists, we must reflect the mood and be aware of the rules governing our line of work. The next few days will no doubt see law enforcement perform its constitutional function - protecting and defending .This impending protest will be a rite of passage ( hopefully) that will go a long way in advancing our pursuit of freedoms that we hold dear- (if only it is )without incident.

Reporting the Nigerian Protest: Can Media Stay Neutral? The ongoing Nigerian protests have brought this question to the forefront of my mind. Can we, as media professionals, truly stay neutral in the face of injustice? A lot of journalists are constantly wrestling with the delicate balance between reporting the facts and taking a stand. On one hand, our role is to report the facts, without bias or agenda. We must seek out diverse perspectives, fact-check, and study the narrative to provide a broad understanding of the situation. On the other hand, neutrality can be perceived as collaboration. When we fail to take a stand against oppression, are we not indirectly condoning it? The Nigerian protests are a cry for justice, equality, and human rights. Can we afford to remain neutral in the face of such a critical moment in history? I believe that neutrality doesn't mean moral equality. We can report the facts while still acknowledging the inherent injustices. We can amplify the voices of the excluded without compromising our integrity. So, I ask you: Can media stay neutral in times of social unrest? Should we? Is it our responsibility to take a stand, or do we risk compromising our objectivity? Share your thoughts. #iAmPDAVE #MultimediaDesignStrategist # BroadcastJournalist

New today from TAT/ Truth about Threats Here's a very different perspective about the campus protests over the war in Gaza. It is what the military calls, MOE, or measures of effectiveness, in influence campaigns. Campus protests are a remarkably clear indicator of just how impotent that the US national security is at what I personally call, "ethical influence." Like the false narratives that supported and still do support today's MAGA GOP, the narratives supporting the Gaza protesters have existed for decades in the US and Western world. We have done NOTHING, about them. The reason is because the national security community has been an abject failure to either project US and Western values globally or, defend them at home. Now, these long planted seeds of false, adversarial narratives have matured and developed into powerful weapons against our society. The natsec community can barely spell the word narrative, let alone understand it. They hand out contracts of our hard-earned tax dollars to organizations like the new National Center for Narrative Intelligence and other useless/ impotent defense contractors who use the word in the title of their program but know absolutely nothing about it. They waste millions more of our taxes on nothing... absolutely nothing. This isn't sour grapes for me because I don't want the contracts, nor a job. I just want my nation safe for everyone's children and grandchildren, mine included. The nepotism within the contracting world is a cancer and there is forty years of failure to prove it. The community responsible for protecting the US from influence operations works on gibberish for doctrine and failure is their only milestone. Still, we hand out millions to the same, alleged experts. They refuse to listen to operators, of which only a handful exist. They prefer Ph.Ds. who have never been in the field. The answer is a combination of operational experience and brilliant academia. Psyop is not that experience because they are only one slice. Would any of you pay your doctor if they had failed your family for decades while charging huge sums? Their wasted tax dollars run perilously close to waste, fraud and abuse... for over 4 decades. Please see this post as just one more warning from someone who is in fact, one of those "operators" and one with recorded successes. If you love your grandchildren as I do mine, it's time to put your foot down and stop the insanity. p.s. If anyone tells you that CYBER or AI will save us, they haven't got a clue about what they are talking about.
