In 1955, Nobel-winner Daniel Kahneman famously built an algorithm to cut mis-hiring in the Israeli army by 1/3. A new study from interviewing.io measured this same approach vs modern tech recruiters I was SHOCKED With the full resume, recruiters were only slightly better than a coin flip at predicting how a candidate would do on a role-specific technical interview. Not a surprise. Recruiters make snap decisions with <30 seconds per resume. A near-impossible task! The surprising bit is that with only 5 simple inputs, the algorithm was REMARKABLY GOOD at predicting tech interview outcomes. The simple model that worked: 1. Did the candidate work at a top firm? 2. Did the candidate get a degree from a top institution? 3. Years of experience So why are we still asking recruiters to slog through hundreds of resumes, instead of letting the robot handle it?

It's like a chill, small-batch, locally-sourced alternative to YC, where you can either hang out as a member forever - or choose the VC-funded adventure. The -1 to 0 phase [0] they talk about at SPC is real, and it made a real difference for us to have a home at SPC. It takes a lot to quit your job and do something new, especially when it isn't entirely clear what you're doing. (1) Do it – take the leap! and (2) consider joining SPC. Though the core vision has remained the same, many of the important turns in our squiggle at Substrate (including the graph framework) came from those early days at SPC. My service in the IDF taught me almost everything I know about building startups. (Keep reading so you can skip the army part, lol) I spent 4 years as a combat officer, leading a team of 40+ amazing people. Along the way, I picked up some serious skills in leadership, team building, and figuring out how to get things done. Here are the 3 biggest lessons I learned: 1/ Mission first, always 2/ Make your people the best they can be 3/ There’s literally NOTHING you can’t do These lessons have shaped who I am and how I run my company every single day. ◆ Focusing on the mission keeps me dialed in on the big picture, even when things get tough. It also makes daily tasks easier. Being mission-driven means your tasks get done by the end of the day—if they’re not, then it’s not the end of the day! ◆ Sure, we all want A-Players on our team, but even A-Players need fine-tuning. Helping them grow = helping your company grow. Simple as that. (How do you grow the people around you? That’s a great question for another post!) ◆ Believing anything’s possible if you put in the work? Total game-changer. When you truly believe in yourself, things start to click. Sounds cliché? It’s a mindset. I know I could learn how to play the cello tomorrow morning or be an astronaut—it’s all about how much effort I’m willing to put into it. Military service was hands-down one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it was also the most rewarding. Honestly, I have no idea where Windmill Growth would be without it! 😂

Today we're launching our newest candidate quality-of-life feature on Ropes - IDE themes. There's a universal dislike for the rigid IDEs that assessment co's force on candidates. These code editors are slow, clunky, and missing the styes/shortcuts that developers enjoy. Developers are unique, and we work in unique ways. Ropes offers two new options to let candidates keep their style: (1) First, many employers on Ropes allow candidates to work in their own IDEs entirely. We've developed a way to gather insights like you were in the room, while allowing developers to use their daily environments. (2) For cases that need a browser-based IDE - we're giving the ability for candidates to choose their style/editor setup before the assessment starts - so they're comfortable when it begins. --- My bet is that if we build a great experience for candidates, we'll be building a great platform for evaluators, too. Why Do Offers Get Declined? Let’s Talk. Over the next two weeks, I’ll dive into one of the biggest challenges in hiring—offer declines. At Hop, we’ve supported thousands of offers in the AI/ML and GenAI talent market and seen firsthand how often promising opportunities fall through at the final stage. Each decline taught us valuable lessons as a company, and I’ve documented all of them. Now, I’ll be sharing what we’ve learned—better strategies, missed opportunities, and critical missteps. Week 1: I’ll be focusing on startups—how early-stage founders can avoid common traps and win top talent without overselling or overextending. Week 2: I’ll focus on large-scale hiring within big companies, with layered teams and intricate decision-making processes. I recently listened to Zach Perret, founder of Plaid, on the 20VC podcast discussing his evolution in recruiting. His mindset shift resonated with me. Here are three key takeaways: ▶ Be yourself and do it. Cold emails and genuine curiosity unlock unrecruitable people. People love to talk about things they're passionate about. ▶ Embrace the hunt. The best founders love to compete for talent. They understand the value each person can bring and don't like losing. This skill will also translate into founder-led sales. ▶ Hire for "Spike". This is essential when building an early team. I often think of it as the shape of a "T"—someone with deep expertise in one area but is open and curious to learn and contribute in other areas outside their core strength.
