Highway is a long-coat German Shepherd Dog trained and certified as a therapy dog. A therapy dog is a dog that might be trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, hospices, disaster areas, and to people with autism.

Highway has passed the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test and the additional further requirements of Love on a Leash organization specific to the environments in which the dogs will be working. Currently Highway is also visiting patients and staff in Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY and St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington along with nursing homes.

Studies have shown that after just 20 minutes with a therapy dog, patients’ levels of stress hormones drop and levels of pain-reducing endorphins rise. Endorphins are the brain’s natural narcotic, the substance responsible for the runner’s high that helps injured athletes ignore pain.

In elderly patients with dementia, depression declines after they interact with a therapy animal. And researchers at the University of Southern Maine showed that therapy dog visits can calm agitation in patients with severe dementia.

In a controlled study of therapy dog visits among patients with heart disease, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found a significant reduction in anxiety levels and blood pressure in the heart and lungs in those who spent 12 minutes with a visiting animal, but no such effect occurred among comparable patients not visited by a dog.

    We visit many organizations including:
    Baptist Health
    St. Joseph's Hospital
    Cardinal Hill Hospital
    Lexington Northside Library
    Richmond Place-Clare Bridge
Tanbark Retirement Home and Nursing Care Facility

Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, provides comfort through companionship. Interacting with a calm, good-natured pet provides a number of physical and mental health benefits. Pet therapy can: Provide relaxation. Lower blood pressure. Lessen anxiety. Improve depression. Increase socialization. Reduce loneliness. Who can request pet therapy at UK HealthCare? We offer pet therapy to patients in several inpatient areas, including: Gill Heart Institute. Kentucky Children’s Hospital – Child Life Program. Markey Cancer Center. What type of animal is used in the pet therapy program at UK HealthCare? Our program includes several certified pet therapy dogs and their respective owners. Every dog-owner pair is carefully screened by the UK Volunteer Services staff to ensure that the dogs are certified in pet therapy, well trained, fully immunized and insured. What can I expect at a pet therapy session? At the time of your pet therapy appointment, the therapy dog and its owner will arrive at your hospital room. We schedule our pet therapy appointments carefully to ensure there is only one dog present in your inpatient unit at any time. After you and the dog greet each other and settle in, the owner can tell you about the dog and its abilities. Some patients prefer to pet their therapy dog, while others wish to interact with their therapy dog through talking or learning more about its abilities. Most patients find comfort in whatever type of interaction they choose. Pet therapy sessions typically last up to 15 minutes. How do I request pet therapy at UK HealthCare? If you are a patient admitted in one of the inpatient areas where pet therapy is offered, you may ask that your doctor, nurse or social worker refer you for pet therapy. You will be seen in your hospital room.

The designation Certified Laughter Leader™ is conferred only by World Laughter Tour, after successful completion of the standard 2-day workshop “How to Create Therapeutic Laughter and Laughter Clubs”. In laughter therapy, laughter is initially evoked by "self-starting” not by humor, jokes or comedy. Participants voluntarily engage in brief enjoyable group exercises that combine laughter with familiar movements. They learn to connect to their original, authentic, satisfying laughter & appreciating the value of true mirthful laughter. We consider humor, or any activity that evokes mirthful laughter, to be advantageous to healing, reducing stress, and enjoying life, & in that sense is therapeutic. Our approach emphasizes and encourages the development of a particular set of attitudes as a means of self-care as well as a contribution to a better world. One does not need to have a sense of humor in order to laugh. Even people who claim to be completely devoid of a sense of humor can enjoy and benefit from laughter therapy. However, over time, systematic participation in a therapeutic laughter program appears to have the effect of improving the sense of humor. Laughter therapy can be learned; leaders can be trained. Trained, qualified leaders demonstrate, motivate, educate, & inspire groups. World Laughter Tour's therapeutic laughter programs are open to everyone; nobody is excluded. Programs are non-political, non-religious, non-exploitive. The systematic therapeutic laughter methods are adaptable to all ages, backgrounds, and even adapt to various physical and mental (cognitive) limitations. Systematic therapeutic laughter methods address body, mind, & spirit. Certified Laughter Leaders(tm) subscribe to a Code of Ethics. Through laughter therapy, participants achieve better balance of emotions, reduce the harmful effects of stress, release harmful anger and judgmentalism; this makes life more enjoyable & helps the world be a better place.
