I really enjoy working with new organizations on their strategic planning. It is my most favorite activity. This last 2 weekends, I worked with Culture Shock San Diego to develop their One Page Strategic Plan. It was the first time I had worked with an arts organization. The learning and growing went both ways. The Culture Shock team is thoughtful, creative and fun. The team is made up of both board members and several of the members of the leadership team. It was a great mix of individuals who knew different aspects of the nonprofit. We had great conversations on several topics, and they really dug deep when they worked on their values. They have big plans and developed a big audacious hairy goal to challenge themselves as they move forward with their growth plans. With an enthusiastic BHAG comes more aggressive fundraising goals. The team was energized and ready to tackle the plan because of the clarity, alignment and focus that was created during our 2-day sessions. At the culmination of the 2 days, they had a completed one Page Strategic Plan.  Everybody knows who is accountable and what the organization needs to do to start their exciting journey. It’s important to remember strategic planning is a journey not a destination. We live in an uncertain world, so their plan is clear but set-up to change when change is required. You can get free help for substance abuse without losing your job or income. I saw it in rehab with several corporate employees. Here are the 5 steps— If you work for a company, you likely have short-term disability insurance as part of your benefits package. In fact, employers must provide it in California, New York, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. And even outside of those mandatory states, many employers include it in your comp/benefits package. How does it work? 1. Admit you have a problem. -Do you drink or use a substance everyday or binge frequently? -Do you do it to numb out or escape reality? 2. Look into your benefits. -Ensure inpatient or outpatient rehab is covered by your health insurance. -Ensure you have short-term disability coverage. 3. Find an inpatient or intensive outpatient program that takes your insurance (do some good research here on the facilities and programs; if you have questions, DM me). 4. Talk to your HR about utilizing your short-term disability for 30-180 days. 5. Go get help. You can’t get fired (legally) for using your short-term disability benefit. You’ll still receive a portion of your income while not working. If you live in California, you may even get your full income depending on the policies of your company—a friend in rehab from the Bay was still getting her full compensation. There's help out there. Don't think you have to do it alone. Benefits exist for a reason--use 'em!

One of the biggest Competitive Culture Advantages most leaders dismiss is no joke... I'll be speaking next Tuesday, April 30th, at California Society of Association Executives (CalSAE)'s Elevate Conference in Burbank. The story of laughter and humor is outdated and often wrong. I could throw facts around. Or tell you stories of companies that have increased innovation, revenues, retention because they understand that positive laughter is a predictor of healthy culture. So, I'll be speaking at 4:15 - you know the LAST thing between you and an open bar! It's not about jokes. Or activities. Though this is interactive. It's about a new mindset that creates a better environment. We are writing a NEW narrative because it is that important. So let's laugh and experience what building braver spaces looks like. This year, I started an awesome new role. I'm a Facilitator and Leadership Coach for Braven and their Career Accelerator Program. Specifically, I lead a cohort of college students at San Francisco State University and help accelerate their career progression. Two tips that have made me especially successful in my facilitation: 1. Don't be afraid of silence. If you ask for sharing or feedback, and no one speaks right away, allow the silence to be there. -Keep breathing. -Create spaciousness for people to share. -Offer patience so those who may be slower to share can feel the invitation. Your comfort with silence will invite others to speak up. 2. Support participants in fully arriving. I start each session with a 2-3 minute guided meditation. This reason I do this: I hear from my students that they are sometimes overwhelmed by the volume of homework, studying required for exams, stress about their grades, and just not enough time in the day. Some of them also work nearly full time jobs in addition to being in school. This works well because: -Sometimes people are joining directly from their last class, and it's helpful for them to have a distinct end to the last one, and the beginning of mine. -Taking a pause in the middle of a busy day, especially at the end of the day can make a huge difference. -Calming the mind and guiding people to a relaxed, psychologically safe state enables them to be fully creative and optimally receptive to learning. ✨️ That post-training glow. ✨️ Just delivered my new training, Building Thriving Teams: Neuroscience Based Strategies for Cultivating Culture & Resilience, to a large local Bay Area nonprofit healthcare organization and it was amazing. The questions that came in, especially about the fawn response at work, and my response about how dangerous the cultures of niceness that the fawn response at work creates, were 🔥🔥🔥. I'll share more thoughts and insights after I metabolize the stress hormones that were required to activate my ability to show up and deliver this training. Last month, Greater Good Magazine (a publication out of University of California, Berkeley) published a piece called "The Four Freedoms We Want at Work." In the article, author and org psych researcher Laura Morgan Roberts presents the four freedoms as: 💥 The freedom to be: to bring our full, authentic selves to the workplace. 💥 The freedom to become: to improve ourselves and our situations. 💥 The freedom to fade: to periodically step back from the spotlight and performance pressure. 💥 The freedom to fail: to take risks, conduct experiments, learn from them, and be coached for future opportunities. If you're familiar with my work, you probably aren't surprised that multiple folks sent the article my way and said things like, "HEY! You need to read this!" or "This reminds me of what you said in your keynote!" (Also, thanks to the amazing humans in my life who send me things that make them think of me and my work ... and that includes those of you who find great deals on stylish sequin items ✨ 😘 ). These four freedoms go on to be described in more detail in the article and each description also includes tangible ways to cultivate that specific freedom. I'll pop the article in the comments, but I'm curious what resonates most with you from the list. For me, the first thing that hit me was that third freedom. I can think of a number of my own professional scenarios where the freedom to fade for a bit would have been an incredible gift (and likely would have kept me from leaving certain positions over the years). What about you? Something you felt was well-established in your workplace? Or maybe something you wish had been part of your organization's culture? Join me this week as I welcome back Nathan Serrato, a Trauma Informed Mindset Coach PCC, based in San Diego, California. It has only been ONE week since the 2024 election and so many of us are struggling to process the outcome and find some sort of peace. I felt it important to have a conversation to let people know first and foremost you are not alone, but equally important your mental health and well-being must be a priority. Although painful, we need to learn to deal with our emotions, especially during a time of crisis. It is critical part of the healing process. With our fundamental rights at stake, we must process all of the emotions we are feeling, which can include fear, sadness, anger, confusion and hopelessness. Learning how to push through these intense emotions will allow us to ultimately draw on the strength and courage necessary to stand up, offer our voices and fight back for what is rightfully ours. During our conversation, Nathan talks in depth about the four ways to process and deal with emotions. Each process carries with it some hard work, but if we put in the effort, we can then come together as a strong and powerful community in order to work towards creating a vision of joy, love and inclusivity for everyone. Please know we are not alone in this moment of crisis as many marginalized communities are also struggling with these powerful emotions. A Chance Encounter, a 500-Mile Friendship, and a Reminder to Connect Scrolling through Facebook last week, a familiar name caught my eye – Dr. Joelle Hood, Ed.D. A fellow leadership trainer I'd connected with years ago before moving from Southern California to Northern California. A flurry of messages later, and we were making plans for dinner, a reunion long overdue. Sunday, I carved out precious time from my weekend to accommodate Joelle's busy schedule. And it was worth every second. Joy filled the air as we caught up on life and shared business insights with Joelle's colleague, Janelle. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of connection – of reaching out, making time, and nurturing relationships, even when life takes us in different directions. This unexpected reunion taught me a valuable lesson: Be intentional about connecting. Don't let busy schedules or distance get in the way of fostering meaningful relationships. Reach out to that old friend, schedule a coffee date with a colleague, or even just send a quick message to someone you admire. You never know what amazing connections and opportunities may arise. Who could you reach out to today to rekindle a connection? Remember, the most valuable connections are often the ones we invest time and effort in.
