Probably 70% of my recruiting practice is for BigLaw. That may be lower than many of my MLA colleagues. Why do I do so much work with mid-sized and smaller firms? A few reasons. In California we are spoiled for choice when it comes to boutiques -- both subject matter focused firms, and full-service boutiques are local institutions here. So, there are a lot of options! A lot of people don't want to work in BigLaw anymore/again/ever. My job is candidate-focused, so it's my job to find a role that matches what people want. It's definitely not my job to wedge them back into BigLaw because I don't have other options to offer them. In the last week MLA has begun a relationship with 3 new boutiques in Northern California, and the list grows all the time. Smaller firms allow associates to broaden out their practices -- their litigation teams do ALL kinds of work, because they don't have critical mass to have specialist strike teams. This model exists across corproate too - smaller firms' corporate teams may include M&A, ECVC, funds, tech trans... Being a generalist is appealing on its face but is also a great path to an in house role. Many, but not all, smaller firms offer better work/life balance. They may also be a more comfortable format for lawyers who want to know their colleagues more closely. So, don't rule out a smaller firm -- you may be surprised if you speak to them at just how much it sounds like the right fit.

Date: July 18, 2024 Location: Live Video-Broadcast Time: 10 AM - 12:10 PM PST Join Jim Butler and Mark Adams on July 18th for a live video-broadcast hosted by myLawCLE as they delve into what recent legislative changes mean for the hospitality industry. On July 1, 2024, the first comprehensive Junk Fee Law in the United States took effect in California. It prohibits drip pricing, which involves advertising a price that fails to include all mandatory charges and fees a consumer will have to pay. It requires upfront disclosure of the full price of goods or services on first consumer contact. It applies to the sale of most goods and services, with only a few exceptions. One last-minute exemption for restaurants was rushed into law only two days before the effective date of the law. This program will present a current update on California and Federal regulation of Junk Fees. SB 478, SB 1524, AB 537 are all in the rear view mirror. The final impact of these bills on the law will be thoroughly complete. We will also analyze HR 6543 and S 2498 pending in the US Congress and the FTC's proposed rule on drip pricing and misleading business practices. Sharing a few excerpts from my article in Los Angeles Lawyer Magazine on AI and access to justice. First - what is the problem we must address? "While it is often the most vulnerable communities that face the most adverse outcomes, similar challenges span the socioeconomic spectrum. Start-ups, freelancers, and small businesses face legal issues that frequently result in lost revenue and almost always present a challenge to growth. Even large corporations face inefficiencies as prohibitive legal costs force them to manage some legal issues internally rather than utilize outside counsel—CEOs often tell their outside law firms how much more work they would send them if their fees were more affordable. Moreover, the negative impacts are not confined to the client’s side. Solo practitioners, as well as small and medium-sized law firms, struggle to generate enough business despite the scope of unaddressed demand. The rates these firms must charge to generate a profit after covering costs associated with marketing and client intake render their services inaccessible to a majority of Americans. Indeed, the high cost of hiring a lawyer puts paid legal advice out of reach for many people, with average hourly costs for lawyers ranging from nearly $200 to more than $500."

A new California regulation will transform cause marketing, requiring registration for businesses engaged in charitable solicitations including "round up" and "donate-at-checkout" programs. The expansive rules will also necessitate disclosure requirements, addressing both online platforms and more traditional commercial co-venturers. The Levine Act and its campaign contribution rules have been a significant topic for local agencies during the 2024 election cycle. This year, the Fall Harvest Lunch focus was on “Embracing disruptive trends in sustainability in 2025.” Insightful panel expertly moderated by Catherine Zinn of Baker Botts, featuring Anna Walker, VP Public Affairs at Levi Strauss & Co.; Lisa Grow, president and CEO at Idaho Power and IDACORP; Samantha Crispin, partner at Baker Botts; and Karen C. Francis, CEO of Limerick Lane Cellars and who serves on several boards, including chair at Polestar. Takeaways for boards re: sustainability: - What is our shareholder base? Who is on the cap table and what are their investing perspectives? (e.g. long or short term) - The demand for AI is driving gas needs, and there is pressure on electricity. The impact is going to be significant. - The energy capacity that may exist is probably gone. If your strategic plan is not linked with your utility, it will not work. - Define sustainability in a way that you can achieve it, that makes sense. Motivating employees is the best entry point.
