Team effectiveness is based on multiple health drivers in four areas that define how well teams work together. Research shows that variations in team behaviors matter for performance: teams that exhibit the right behaviors are more productive and innovative and deliver better results to stakeholders. In this article, researchers identifiy 17 specific team behaviors, which they call “health drivers,” that matter for team performance. If your team members work effectively together, this article is worth a read.

Most firms’ handbooks are a defensive compliance tool. Instead of just preventing mistakes, your policies can help employees know what “good” looks and how to live your core values. Maior’s article, “Redefining Value: A Framework for Employee Engagement,” walks through workforce strategies, one of which is revamping your policies and procedures to actively support your firm’s ethos. The Crux: Well-crafted policies do more than govern—they guide. They turn aspirational values into action, helping employees navigate their roles with clarity and confidence. Examples using values you see in most firms: - Client Service Excellence: Back up your claims of “VIP client service” with standards such as requiring responses to client communications within 24 business hours, detailing how employees should manage out-of-office communications and vacation planning, how the firm handles client issues, etc. - Transparency: If this is important to your firm, make sure information sharing happens with concrete expectations – your financial policies can require regular reporting and open communication, your hiring process can embed honesty and clarity at specific points of the process, etc. - Work-Life Balance: Reflect your commitment to work-life balance through tangible policies, from your time-off policies to performance evaluations that recognize and reward efficient work that respects personal time. New Hawai'i Case Highlights the Critical Need for Effective Sexual Harassment Training and Policies A now-defunct Honolulu-based restaurant, along with their outsourced HR company, have agreed to pay $115,000 and provide other relief to resolve a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), as announced on June 11, 2024. The EEOC's lawsuit revealed that the restaurant co-owner targeted gay employees with sexual harassment by exposing himself and soliciting sex. Despite complaints, the HR company failed to conduct an adequate investigation, allowing the harassment to persist. As part of the settlement, the companies will: - Distribute comprehensive policies addressing discrimination and harassment. - Establish mechanisms for prompt corrective action if discrimination occurs. - Implement an online complaint process. - Provide anti-discrimination training. Just a few weeks ago, I facilitated training for a company that had never conducted such training—until they faced a harassment complaint. Before the training, I reviewed their old policies and procedures, which urgently needed updates. Unfortunately, these updates won't shield the company from liability if the harassed employees decide to sue. Proactive measures could have prevented the harassment or at least minimized potential damages by demonstrating good faith efforts to prevent such incidents. Is your company prepared? Reconnecting after a period of separation is a delicate process, often fraught with uncertainty and emotional risk. Check out my latest Human Capital Leadership Review article, "Fostering a Culture of Vulnerability at Work." Abstract: This article discusses the importance of fostering a culture of vulnerability in organizations in order to improve performance and innovation. It explores the research showing that psychological safety, where employees feel comfortable taking risks and admitting weaknesses, leads to better teamwork, problem-solving and learning. While research demonstrates the benefits of vulnerability, most companies still struggle to create truly psychologically safe cultures. The article then provides practical recommendations for leadership to cultivate vulnerability based on real-world company examples. These include leaders modeling vulnerability, defining clear expectations for respectful engagement, aligning rewards and accountability to encourage risk-taking, and establishing ongoing processes like workshops and reviews that support development from failures and critique.
