We lead today’s Connecting with the viewpoint of Columbia Journalism Review on the plans announced by the AP to create a new sister organization to fundraise for and support state and local journalism.   Governed by an independent board of directors, the 501(c)3 charitable organization will help AP sustain, augment and grow journalism and services for the industry, as well as help fund other entities that share a commitment to state and local news.   We also deliver more of your stories of working in your first AP bureau – continuing an ongoing theme that’s proven highly popular.   Our colleague Norm Abelson observes: “Of all the compelling, humorous, moving and enlightening pieces I have read on Connecting, the recent stories on first AP assignments rank near the top.   “Often they're as interesting as a novel, as educating as a J-school grad course, as personal as a memoir. The twofold increase in the number of BRICS members – with more hopefuls waiting in a queue – indicates growing discontent with the international political and financial systems, which, many believe, protect the geopolitical interests of the “developed few” with scant regard for the “developing majority.” The bloc’s rapid expansion is a wake-up for the US to embrace a more equitable global governance system. As I start thinking about long-term communications planning, this article from Sean Gibbons and Tristan Mohabir is energizing and motivating. It's time (frankly, it has been for a while) to move away from broadcast models and towards targeted community building. While not as clear-cut as roads, clean water, and air, the democratic value to society of public interest journalism is, in my book and many others, a public good, writes Daily Maverick's Styli C.. "The recent tsunami of bad news about the news has raised an interesting question. In today's episode of "State of Current Affairs," hosts Lillian Cauldwell and Viki Esther Chang explored the topic of "Food Security." They discussed how many countries rely on others to supplement their food resources. When a country stops exporting a staple, the receiving country risks facing starvation or a surge in black market economics. For instance,  Singapore, as an island nation, relies on various countries to import rice  to ensure its national diet isn't compromised if one country can't export to them. Ms. Cauldwell highlighted the paradox of the US's wealth, where excess food is destroyed or left to rot in fields while farmers are paid by  the government, resulting in greed, money, and power. They also  discussed innovative methods of food production, such as growing food from air molecules and chemicals, water-based cultivation, and creating meat from molecules, as maintaining cattle has become too costly on limited land. https://lnkd.in/gMZ-idMv
