“These EV mandates aren’t good for the development of better electric cars. If consumers have to buy them, automakers have less incentive to design better models and improve technologies. By keeping the market free, EV enthusiasts also win. There are other authoritarian tendencies in the auto industry which also need to be struck down by the incoming administration. One of those is the right to repair. So many automakers are trying to keep vehicle owners and independent shops from fixing their rides, using everything from arguments about security to copyright law to ensure consumers have to go to a dealership service department. It’s time to end these and other practices designed to crush the little guy in the auto industry. Announced this morning: $72 million funding program for SuperTruck Charge, which will enable the design, development, and demonstration of innovative electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in support of electrified medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs). It also enhances grid resiliency and reliability. We are identifying potential solutions to address the current gaps in electrified MHDV charging infrastructure, enabling greater utilization of electrified fleets, and drastically reducing GHG emissions due to medium-/heavy-duty (MHD) trucks. The SuperTruck Charge funding program supplements the ongoing SuperTruck 3 program, with an emphasis on demonstrating technologies to accelerate the widespread buildout of the high-power charging infrastructure necessary for battery electric MHD trucks. https://lnkd.in/eQs4Ur5b

An excellent piece by John Voelcker. PHEVs are just another counter-productive half-measure from the "anything but EVs" crowd. I own a 2014 Prius Plug-in, which has a measly 11 miles or so of elecric range. I estimate that every time I plug it in, I save about 40 cents. I only bought it because it has a Li-ion battery instead of the NiMH battery in the regular Prius. BTW, this Prius will be my last Toyota, and my last gas-burning car. I'm buying a Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Breaking News! The U.S. Department of Transportation just announced that it is awarding $60 million in grants to accelerate V2X deployment. Today, Intelligent Transportation Society of America President & CEO Laura Demeo Chace joined Shailen Bhatt, Adminstrator of the Federal Highway Administration, Dr. Robert C. Hampshire, Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Science Officer of the USDOT Research and Technology, Carlos Braceras of the Utah Department of Transportation, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City Corporation, and Jay Fox of Utah Transit Authority. Utah DOT and its partners were awarded a grant for the “Connecting the West” project, which was submitted in partnership with Colorado DOT, Wyoming DOT, and the City and County of Denver. This project will enhance collaboration among these authorities, who all have mature and proven V2X systems, to create a cohesive, interoperable network. In Maricopa County, the grant will be put to work utilizing innovative solutions to improve mobility and safety throughout the region. Working with private and public agency partners, the County will lead a large-scale deployment of V2X technologies relying on 5.9 GHz communications to connect 750 physical and virtual roadside units with an estimated 400 onboard units targeting transit, emergency, and freight fleets. The 750 intersection upgrades would represent 25% of all intersections in the county. The Texas Transportation Institute project will build momentum for V2X by implementing signal phase and timing expansion, flood warning integration, VRU identification, and rail crossing integration, among other uses. The outcome will be a cutting-edge, interconnected network that not only enhances safety and mobility but also serves as a reference implementation for the future of connected transportation. This deployment will create a multi-regional operations environment across a population area of more than five million people and hundreds of thousands of daily trips on 300 miles of the National Highway System utilizing the communications spectrum and companion technologies to dramatically expand current outreach mechanisms. #fleetelectrification is in a conundrum. Many want #evs but will wait until the charging #infrastructure is in place. More good news on the sale of BEV, Plug-In Hybrid and Hybrid cars in the United States. "The share of electric and hybrid vehicle sales in the United States increased again in the third quarter of 2024 (3Q24), reaching a record. Combined sales of hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) increased from 19.1% of total new light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales in the United States in 2Q24 to 21.1% in 3Q24, according to estimates from Wards Intelligence." 🚚 Calling all #MHDEV stakeholders! 🚛 Comments on the Federal Highway Administration's Request for Information (RFI) from stakeholders about electric vehicle (EV) charging technologies and infrastructure needs for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are due next Tuesday, November 12. The RFI seeks input in four areas to support MHDEVs: 🔋 1) unique EV charger and station needs; ⚡ 2) vehicle charging patterns; 🔌3) charging technology and standardization, and 👷‍♀️ 4) workforce, supply chain, and manufacturing to support charging of medium- and heavy-duty battery EVs in DOT vehicle classes four through eight, which include delivery vans, school buses, semi-tractor trucks, fire trucks, dump trucks, and tour buses. The new 2027 Scouts got a lot of attention for their extended-range Harvester option. But presuming that EREVs will be plugged in is magical thinking not backed up by data, or promises of data, from automakers. "There’s a simple solution to that: The more aggressive emissions regulators in our country (lookin’ at you, California Air Resources Board) can require EREV makers to provide data on how much + how often they’re plugged in—specifically how many of their miles are covered via grid electricity vs burning gasoline." Yesterday, Los Angeles Metro released a solicitation to purchase up to 1,160 zero emission buses (solicitation link in comments). The base order includes 260 battery electric buses (BEBs), 20 fuel cell electric buses, and opportunity chargers for future bus rapid transit lines. The order is an important next step in achieving Metro's ambitious zero emission fleet goals. Metro's procurement meets many of the Federal Transit Administration's administrative priorities meant to strengthen the U.S. transit bus manufacturing industry -- there are only two Buy America compliant full size transit bus OEMs left!! We've reduced customization, introduced progress payments, and implemented a regional procurement approach that will allow other LA County transit operators to buy buses through the contract options. While it will be a few years before these buses hit the streets, Metro's existing BEB fleet has logged more than 5 million miles, to my knowledge, more than any other transit agency in the U.S. And we have 95 more BEBs coming this year that will serve the J Line and local service around the County. BEB technology still has a long way to go before it reaches cost and performance parity with Metro's renewable gas-powered CNG fleet, but we anticipate considerable improvements with each new generation of buses. We hope that by aligning our procurements with FTA's administrative priorities it will bring more certainty to a challenged industry, draw more competition into the transit bus space, and drive technology advancement. Well done Daniel Surmenian, Metro's Vendor / Contract management team, and the many other staff and consultant team members who got this procurement together. Your efforts not only help to push the industry forward but also put Metro's recent application to the FTA LoNo / Bus & Bus Facilities grant programs in a strong position to receive funding. Go Metro!

Electric school bus adoption continued to soar in 2024, thanks in large part to the bipartisan Clean School Bus Program. This is one of the key findings of the World Resources Institute's new analysis of electric school bus data nationwide.   Commitments for electric #SchoolBuses rose more than 1,000% from 2021 to 2024, and clean rides are on their way to more than 1,500 school districts nationwide. There are nearly 5,000 #ElectricSchoolBuses on the road today, and more than 250,000 students are already riding these buses – free of the toxic fumes of diesel-burning school buses!
