Hi 🙂 I’m Kate. I’m Riley’s mom, Founder and CEO of REB VP of Marketing at Incrementum Digital, and I live in Willamette Valley, Oregon. Menstrual pain relief is something near and dear to my heart, and while my career has been focused on e-commerce advertising for the last decade, my daily life has been consumed by endometriosis pain and infertility. I’ve had one baseball sized cyst removed from my abdomen and four ablation surgeries to try to alleviate my pain with next to no relief. Endometriosis has no known cure, and the cause is still unclear - so, women like myself have been told that this pain is something we have to live with for the rest of our lives. This statement makes me sick when I consider accepting it as a fact, so I refuse to do so. I have left countless gyno appointments feeling hopeless about my pain after reviewing all of the birth control options that are the least likely to give me a stroke or autoimmune disorder - anyone experiencing period pain deserves more than this. I’m launching REB (relief for every body) because menstrual agony deserves just as much symptomatic relief as the common cold, flu, or any other common ailment you would find relief for at your average drugstore. Yet, when I walk into the “family planning aisle” I’m met with two things: Pregnancy tests, and menstrual hygiene. An aisle that screams “HIDE YOUR PERIOD BEFORE ANYONE KNOWS IT EXISTS!” Can you imagine the number of relief solutions that would exist if men experienced an hour of endometriosis cramps? Let that sink in for a minute I’ll wait. In this picture I’m wearing REB’s first design ever - The Riley Grace. We're heading into heart of the Holiday Spending season and the million dollar question for brands and retailers is....which consumer will show up? Care-free Carrie or Anxious Anne? Care-free Carrie just spent a few grand in Indy catching the last leg of Taylor's tour. Her job is going well, her husband is is excited by the recent market highs, and for her and her friends in (Westchester / Winnetka / Greenwood Village / Brentwood) things are great. Ugg Ultras top her daughters Christmas list this year and she can't wait to shop the deals this season. She can't get out of Costco for less than three Benjamins and is a big CAVA fan. Anxious Anne is one of the 68% of Americans who think the Economy is "Not so good or poor". Her husband was laid off 4 months ago and can't seem to find a job. Her friends in (White Plains / Naperville / Littleton / Plano) seem to be doing better than her but she puts on a brave front - at least they haven't missed any of the $700/month payments on her Kia Telluride. Her CC debt is fairly high - she's part of a national trend that pushed balances up 24 billion last quater to an all time high of 1.1 Trillion - 8.1% higher than a year ago. She's not sure how much to spend this season with so much uncertainty ahead, is a deal hawk, and definitely adds up what she's dropping into her cart at Safeway to stay on budget and avoid checkout surprise. My buddy Chuck may have said it best: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity....." The question I'm trying to figure out daily is will this be the season of hope or the winter of despair? I suppose that rests on consumer perception and where they currently sit in the job market - in the roaring 20s or the Great Depression (a comment I've heard dozens of times on this very platform). What's a brand or retailer to do? Wait and see? Run hard towards Carrie's wallet? Appeal to Anne's sensibilities? It'll be fascinating to watch and see how long this bifurcation can continue. Lululemon missed Wall Street's sales expectations for the first time in over two years, leading to a reduction in full-year revenue guidance. The company anticipates full-year net revenue between $10.38 billion and $10.48 billion, down from previous estimates of $10.7 billion to $10.8 billion. Comparable sales growth was only 2%, significantly below the anticipated 5.9%, with a notable decline of 3% in the Americas. Vinyl Outsold CDs Two-to-One Last Year -- It's remarkable to see vinyl records not just surviving but thriving with $1.4 billion in sales. In an era where any song is just a click away, the continued growth of vinyl speaks volumes about our evolving desires and perhaps, the direction in which the world is heading. While I've always cherished records, I can't imagine life without the convenience of digital streaming from Spotify and Apple Music, which gives me access to more music than ever. Yet, in this digital age, I find myself increasingly drawn to the tactile allure of vinyl. When I do take the time to play a record, I’m fully immersed in the experience—from handling the album and dropping the needle to flipping the record. It’s an engagement that I value even more nowadays. Last year I interviewed three Gen Z shoppers on an episode of "Let's Talk Resale", including Sophia Richter, who shared her experience thrifting in a JC Penny parking lot. It wasn’t as straightforward as online shopping, but the thrill of the hunt was a big part of the experience. This all highlights a broader point about our complex human desires and potential future trends. The resurgence of vinyl and the popularity of thrifting tell parallel stories in our modern narrative of seeking experiences. They underscore that while we readily embrace digital efficiency, we also crave and value immersive, hands-on experiences. With streaming accounting for 81% of music revenue in 2023, it will remain dominant. Yet, I also anticipate that vinyl sales will continue their 17-year growth trend. There's a time and place for vinyl records, and they seem even more special in an era when I can instantly summon any song on Spotify to match my mood. Two Organizations dropped bombshells on the street last month. Two behemoths, Legacy organizations, Iconic Brands, clear “𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴” in their categories that have stood the test of time. Both struggling on growth. Profits waning. Stock Prices de-rated. Both had relatively new Leaders at the helm. Illustrious backgrounds, handpicked to “𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮”. (Beware of the cliche!) Both organizations realised that the future would be markedly different & hence picked talent with radically different experiences to take them into the future. Organizations (& their Boards) have muscle-memory too. When faced with insurmountable challenges, they go back to their “tried & tested” playbooks. - 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐬 resorted to getting a prized-catch from Chipotle amidst a lot of fanfare & criticism alike. - 𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐞 pulled an old-veteran out from retirement. As comfortable as the warm blanket in winter. What drove the difference in their approach? Didn’t Starbucks not have an internal bench to pull them from the current spot? - Didn’t 𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐞 feel the need to continue with their “Outside-in” transformative journey? - Does 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐬 have a more assimilative culture than 𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐞 & hence more comfortable with an outsider? Or, is 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐬 attempting to address the Wall street, before it addresses the market? - Both the new leaders have started-off a strikingly similar market. Both talk of restoring old glory. Both talk of “𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘦”. (Remember - strengthening the "strengths" before you try to weaken the "weaknesses") - 𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐞’s back to talking to the 𝑨𝒕𝒉𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆* (within) & Starbucks is back to celebrating “𝑪𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒆” & “𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆”   Personally, I found the 𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐞 approach more relatable. When in trouble, go back to your strengths. Bring back the Old glory. The Best Practices from the Past, that got waylaid in pursuit of new ground. In times of ambiguity, put your faith in the guard that has your trust. The one who understands how stuff works. The one who understands & connects with the cultural values. I played catch-up this morning with Second Nature Media during my shake-out on the trail with Episode 20 (link below). Loved the discourse that Dylan Bowman and Aaron Lutze shared regarding the Wieden + Kennedy produced "Winning Isn't For Everyone" spot they did for Nike leading up to the Olympics. I encourage everyone to watch/listen to Episode 20 and then share your thoughts in the comments on this thread or on the Second Nature page. Nike has been an interesting study in recent months (and over the past couple of years). Do I think they have had some missteps? Sure. And when you're the biggest player on the field, those missteps are going to be magnified and heavily scrutinized. Despite facing scrutiny from industry experts and trade media, they clinched the top spot as the world's most popular sportswear brand among 15-to-25-year-olds in 2023 by a landslide. That contrast between what the industry thinks and what is true for consumers is a very interesting tension to pay attention to. David Callahan had a great post two weeks ago going deeper on this very subject that I encourage you to seek out on his thread. Graphic design friends with bandwidth, pay close attention to the end of Episode 20 as it seems DBo and Lutze could use your help for a project they're working on together. PRIME DAY LIVE TAKES: DAY 2 We’re wrapping up the second and final day of Prime Day. It’s looking like Amazon has accomplished its goal of beating last year’s Prime Day performance… by a healthy margin. Not only that, but participation from CPG brands this year felt like the highest it’s ever been! Here are some hot takes from Day 2 (maybe a bit less rosy!): 💹 Are the deals fake? - I got questions about price increases ahead of Prime Day, which has the impression of making the deals seem “fake”. (I think this is trending on Tiktok) - This definitely exists, though it’s not so simple to pull off: requires months of planning. “Reference price” is closely monitored and if it moves ahead of Prime Day, you often have to recreate your deals or restructure - In our categories we actually worried about June or July deals or price matching which would make your reference price too *low*, requiring too deep of a discount brands couldn’t afford. On that topic… 🏷️ Price matching from other platforms is getting worse: - Chewy and Target have started price-matching promos or sales prices which can jeopardize Prime Day deals. - Because of this, it’s becoming almost table-stakes to have unique assortments for different retailers. ♻️ Amazon is emphasizing repurchase behavior: - This year, Amazon showcased deals from brands on “Buy It Again” list (appearing high on the homepage) - S&S coupons were everywhere - a 50% coupon was a great follow-on to a deep discount - The mega brands you know were some of the biggest deals - Apple, Dyson, etc. Best Buy now operates as a 3rd party seller - Paired with less prominent badging of deals, feels like Amazon focused on driving sales a bit more than new product discovery 🛠️ Prime Day also had lots of technical issues: - The Amazon advertising console was down for over an hour last night - Brands experienced several strange, new suppressions that prevented them from running coupons or promos. - Prime Day badging displayed somewhat inconsistently, causing confusion for shoppers (and frustration for brands!) The next 2 weeks is critical. The purpose of Prime Day is—and always has been—new customer acquisition. Brands should specifically target new people who visited their pages. Follow-on promos for people still in cart, emails about the follow-on promos (”Did you miss it?” FOMO is strong!), retargeting ads, and repurchase campaigns should all be launched in the coming days. Finally, want to know if your Prime Day was good? My advice: look at your Best Seller Ranking compared to your direct competitors. It’s the simplest measure of relative performance! You can use a tool like Keepa or Helium10 to track both this and price (to see if any brands pulled price increase tricks!). - - - - - Next week, we’ll be aggregating all of Cartograph’s Prime Day performance data and writing a deeper list of learnings from this year.

These posts keep popping into my feed. Kara Richardson Whitely’s story from Outside Festival is one of so many that make me smile. The Outside Festival ended up attracting 18,000 attendees, surpassing our early projections of 10,000. The event demonstrated how a comprehensive marketing strategy, focused on creating a deep connection with our existing audience, while creating an authentic and safe space for new customers, can earn trust. While Kara’s story is specifically about Backpacker. Other attendees connected with Velo, Pinkbike, Outside magazine, Gaia, Trailforks, Ski, Yoga Journal, Warren Miller or Run. Outside is ALL of these activities and more. So how do you message all these brands at once? Start with the mission to: Get Everyone Outside. And then put your money where your mouth is and create a physical manifestation of all these beloved brands - that actually makes the outdoors more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Below are 3 themes from our big marketing strategy. 1. Brand Identity and Value Proposition The Outside Summit and Festival was designed to celebrate outdoor culture, create an inclusive gathering, and promote sustainability in alignment with our vision to inspire and activate more people to experience the outdoors. This clear and consistent brand messaging, combined with the value proposition of music, film, gear and ideas, resonated and attracted a big first year crowd PLUS 1.7B earned media impressions. - so far. 2. Customer Engagement and Relationship Building. Kara is an example of how deeply our audience and contributors are connected to our brands. Bringing them to life, side by side, in a fun, safe vibrant space was the vision. High-profile speakers like Shaun White and performances by popular bands such as Fleet Foxes and Thundercat created a dynamic and engaging atmosphere that fostered a strong emotional connection with attendees. This is a long way of saying, “we made it cool.” 3. Serve the Community and Get the Word Out We understand the interests and preferences of our audiences and target market. Our editors have been serving these passionate participants for decades. We built this for THEM. By curating a diverse lineup of outdoor and active lifestyle activities and experiences we knew the community would be thrilled. We utilized various communication channels, including email, social media, paid digital, PR, radio, street teams, community outreach, mixer events and partnerships with the likes of Denver Art Museum, Visit Denver and the State of Colorado, to effectively promote the event and attract a diverse audience for year 1. A limited budget forced us to be creative, hustle and find ways to get the word out. These posts, like Kara’s, full of genuine connection and community, are a great illustration of how a well-executed experiential marketing strategy, rooted in building brand connection and trust can create a lasting impression. At UMAI, we often get asked if professional photography or if UGC (user-generated content) is best for marketing CPG brands. The answer? Both! I’m going to let my fashion background help me explain this one… I’ll compare UGC to on-the-fly athletic wear vs. perfect styling and dressing to the nines as reminiscent of studio assets. Both are aesthetically “cool” for different reasons and convey different meanings. Dressing up with pristine makeup, hair, and crisply ironed clothes, makes you feel like a powerhouse. People look at you and know you put a lot of effort into looking that good, and that garners respect. VS. just leaving pilates, a bit disheveled, albeit wearing a cute matching athletic set, evokes cool, relatable, and approachable.  Just like humans, brands are multi-faceted, and people expect brands nowadays to be more vulnerable and share more transparency in all aspects of their business. Professional studio photography and videography in marketing show that your brand is legit, polished, and high-quality. People see these stylized brand assets and want your product to feel just as elevated in their lives. You’re essentially selling “the dream” here. Then, UGC-style content shows that your brand is friendly and relatable. It portrays your brand's social and community aspects and builds trust. Here, you’re selling the KLT (know like trust) and relatability of your brand. So, when considering your Instagram feed, ad creatives, and other marketing needs, remember to strike a balance between both!

POSSIBLE marketing conference arrived in Miami two weeks ago, and it was just really...fun. Hot topics included cookie deprecation, the role AI will have in our industry, and what personalization really means for customers. Highlights included conversations where humanity and creating real connections were hero-ed in compelling ways. So many golden nuggets to mine - some favorites worth sharing here: From Gary Vaynerchuk at VaynerX: ⭐️ Content should be driven by the question: “What makes people feel?”  ⭐️ Opening line is vital: be obsessed with the first second of content. From Patrick O'Keefe at E.L.F. BEAUTY: ⭐️ Think about/find the community that isn’t being talked to. Liquid Death partnership changed conversation and reached a new audience. Data couldn’t have told them to make Corpse Paint. But data could tell them there are consumers in Goth world. Listen and lean in. Be brave. From Tracy-Ann (Goodwin) Lim at JPMorgan Chase & Co.: ⭐️ Don’t just call customers on their birthday: communicate meaningfully over time.  ⭐️ Marry how technology makes things easier with human touch. From Molly Battin at The Home Depot: ⭐️ The Home Depot’s brand is our people. Empower associates so they understand values and culture. Empower them to make personal connections. That’s where you unlock customer loyalty—because of trust created. From David Shing at Shingy: ⭐️ People today identify as many different things. We need new archetypes to capture multi-hyphenates. ⭐️ Massive mistake not to have good first-party data. Take, but give something back that celebrates the gift of data.
