I’m at #SOFWeek2024 currently, and this morning, Military Embedded Systems published 2 articles summarizing yesterday’s sessions that are rather contradictory and confusing if read through the lens of a VC-backed startup. First, there was an article about Ms. Melissa “Mojo” Johnson’s keynote expressing SOCOM’s interest in expanding its ecosystem, to include proactive engagement with the VC and investor communities and their portfolio companies. Second, there was an article summarizing key takeaways from the PEO Rotary Wing session that stressed the importance of modular open systems architectures (MOSA). In the second article, Dan Taylor the author writes: “…industry should be focused on helping [PEO Rotary Wing] solve problems with technology the agency already has rather than developing their own proprietary solutions.” If executing on Ms. Johnson’s vision is a priority, this statement needs to be revised to state: “…industry should be focused on helping …solve problems USING technology the agency already has WHILE developing their own proprietary solutions.” This is the only way everyone will win—startups, VCs and investors, and especially the government. BRINC, a pioneer in drone technology for first responders, announced a partnership with Echodyne, a leader in ground-based radar systems. This collaboration will integrate Echodyne’s advanced MESA radar technology into BRINC’s purpose-built Drone as First Responder (DFR) solution. The strategic relationship enables a path toward beyond-visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations without visual observers, advanced airspace awareness for safer operations, and lowers the barrier to entry for public safety agencies looking to start or expand DFR programs. DFR systems significantly lower emergency response times and enable more informed decision-making for first responders. Current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations require a visual observer onsite for drone operations to monitor flights. The onsite visual observer rule limits drones’ flexibility and operating times for emergency response operations. More importantly, it adds an extra staffing burden when public safety agencies across America are understaffed. As evidence of the staffing shortage, the Police Executive Research Forum’s 2023 study on police staffing found that police resignations have increased over the last four years, alongside a five percent decrease in sworn-in officers over the same period. DFR requires extended range and operation in obstructed environments and inclement weather. BVLOS waivers are essential for successful DFR implementation. The partnership with Echodyne will add a layer of safety and reliability while providing a path for BRINC’s customers to meet the stringent FAA requirements for BVLOS operations without a visual observer. “By combining BRINC’s drone technology with Echodyne’s advanced radar, we are creating a safe, robust, and reliable solution for first responders to deploy 911 response drones autonomously to emergencies,” said Blake Resnick, BRINC CEO. Initial deliveries have begun, and further expansions are planned, particularly to enhance collaboration between autonomous and existing manned platforms. 2️⃣ L3Harris Technologies Nears 2.5-Year Stock High Amidst Rising Defense Demand: L3Harris Technologies, a leading defense contractor, is approaching a 2.5-year high in stock value, reflecting strong performance amid ongoing global conflicts. The company's third-quarter earnings per share increased by 5% to $3.34, with an 8% rise in sales to $5.29 billion. This growth is attributed to heightened demand for aerospace and defense products, including aircraft surveillance systems and space-based missile warning systems 3️⃣ Defense Department AI Strategy and Industry Support: The Pentagon released its "Data, Analytics, and AI Adoption Strategy" emphasizing the need for responsible AI development in defense. This strategy seeks to speed up the delivery of AI-enabled systems while engaging industry partners in refining AI applications for mission-critical tasks. With over 685 active AI projects and $1.8 billion in AI investment for FY2024, the DoD is focusing on cross-industry collaboration to advance AI innovations critical to U.S. national security. 4️⃣ Leidos Raises Annual Forecasts Due to Robust Defense Demand: Leidos Holdings, another U.S. defense contractor, has elevated its annual profit and revenue forecasts, anticipating continued strong demand for weapons amid geopolitical tensions. The company now projects its 2024 profit to range between $9.80 and $10 per share, up from the previous estimate of $8.60 to $9.
