John Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, established Sutter’s Mill in California’s Sacramento Valley with the intention of building an agricultural empire. He hired an American, James Marshall, to help oversee its construction. In January 1848, Marshall was inspecting the mill when he noticed shiny flakes in the riverbed and quickly realized they were gold. Marshall and Sutter tried to keep their discovery a secret, fearing that a rush of miners would disrupt their operations and plans, but it was to no avail. Word started spreading around California by March 1848 and when President James Polk confirmed the discovery in a December 1848 address to Congress, it fueled an international frenzy that persisted until the mid 1850s. In many ways, the current hype and frenzy with AI is reminiscent of the gold rush. There are a lot of money and resources being plowed into the space, there is a growing awareness that it won’t last forever and a few key players will reap most of the profits, and the biggest winners thus far, such as Nvidia, have been those that capitalize on the needs of the new entrants. However, for the average person, who wants to share in the upside, there is little guidance or direction. Sure, Chat-GPT is impressive and even non-technical people use it for tasks like brainstorming or copywriting, but there are so many more outstanding use cases that most people do not consider. While not entirely AI based, three of my favorite automation tools are PhantomBuster, Browse AI, and Clay. Each can do amazing things, but to do so, it is essential to take the raw features they give you and combine them in such a way that they easily solve common business problems. In 1848, just giving the average prospector a shovel and map and saying, “There are millions of dollars to be made, go find the gold!” would not meaningfully assist them. In 2024, telling someone about AI and saying, “You can save tons of hours and make tons of money with these tools, go for it!” is about just as useful. In this article (1st comment), I will be going into step-by-step detail on five very powerful automations I have found using a combination of Phantombuster, Browse AI and Clay.

So California is price-fixing services, which I believe is illegal federally...something about railroads in the 1800s.

Disregard the computer voice… this is a great example of what a company can do when they mine and study all their data. So many tasks done by people can be eliminated…and some may say that’s bad because you’re “taking away peoples jobs”, but when the repetitious work that those people do can be automated, can’t we teach those workers something that’s not repetitious that can use their brain in a way that encourages creativity and thought, things AI will struggle with as the brain will always be more powerful than AI in many instances?! "#AI Companies Fight to Stop California Safety Rules" | Industry says a bill moving through the state legislature would chill innovation for the young technology - Well written by Preetika Rana (unfortunately behind a pay wall) This appears like #Californiagovernment getting involved in something it doesn't fully understand, including the value to the citizens, and it didn't consult (arguable) with tech to better understand it. The bill applies to anyone doing business in California. Will we see another large group of companies moving out or refusing to do business in California? “There are people in the tech sector who are opposed to any and all forms of regulation no matter what it is, even for something reasonable and light-touch..." - Scott Wiener, #Democratic state senator from San Francisco who drafted the bill. He said he is engaging with the tech industry and is open to changes. “If it were to go into effect as written, it would have a chilling effect on innovation in California,” said Luther Lowe, the head of public policy at startup accelerator Y Combinator, which has played a leading role in lobbying efforts against the bill. “There are clauses in there that, honestly as an #AI developer, I have no idea what to do,” - Andrew Ng, Stanford University computer-science professor, who co-founded Google’s deep-learning research team. I am sure everyone will have their opinion. Do you think California government should enforce this bill? Do you think they should have consulted with tech first to understand the early day costs and/or benefits such as to the human condition, before designing such a Bill? A Washington State judge has ruled that a video enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) is not admissible in court. The video footage was originally recorded on a cell phone and later manipulated by an AI program. The prosecutors claimed that the edited video predicted images rather than reflecting the true size, shape, edges, and color of the original video. This is the first time a legal ruling has been made of this nature - and it will be interesting to see what this means for the future of video evidence. I Live In Motel California = Look folks: I have been living in California since 1996 ... Silicon Valley: 1996 - 2023 (27 years) Sacramento, California Capital: 2024 - We know that there is a famous song: Hotel California For this post I thought hard on this post title: I Live In Hotel California I could not do it ... but I could do this instead: I Live In Motel California = The Sacramento City Attorney’s Office warned a chain retail store that it could face a public nuisance charge due to a large number of phone calls placed to police when thieves repeatedly stole from its Land Park location. A person with knowledge of the warning, but not authorized to speak publicly due to the fear of retaliation, told The Sacramento Bee that city officials threatened the Target at 2505 Riverside Blvd. in the past year with an administrative fine. A Sacramento police spokesman confirmed the location — a site that prompted heavy ire from Land Park residents due to repeated crimes — when asked about the apparent warning. The alleged warning issued by Sacramento city officials — and similar actions by other cities across the state — prompted lawmakers to add an amendment to a retail theft bill that would outlaw such threats made by authorities. Pursuing legal actions against businesses for reporting crime brought heavy criticism from law enforcement. It’s unclear why City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood's office would allegedly resort to issuing such a warning to any business seeking help from police. Swanson did not grant multiple interview requests to the City Attorney’s Office over a period of about a week. Clark Kelso, a professor of law at the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law, said “there is no question” that city attorneys have every right to pursue a public nuisance charge against businesses in which owners know the property is dangerous. However, experts said it’s unclear if the law allows a public nuisance charge when people steal from the store. The retailer is a victim, and could be seeking serious help when confronted with shoplifters, he said. The alleged warnings by city officials statewide may affect what crime data is reported as businesses contend with the potential of facing legal action for reporting retail theft, a topic spurring heavy debate in California. Lawmakers have said the unreliable data has caused some skepticism about what, if any, legislation should be passed. = I will stop here. What is the difference between a Hotel and Motel? Hotels are larger, have on-property amenities, and are often centrally located in urban areas. Motels are one- or two-stories, have little to no amenities, and are scattered along roads and highways and perfect for road trips, often in rural areas. The word motel (from a blend of motor and hotel) typically implies a roadside hotel in which the doors of the rooms can be entered from outside. Now you decide: Do I live in Hotel California or Motel California?

It’s been a busy week for the CA governor. Quite a few AI-related bills signed. Earlier today, several more AI bills were signed, including the California AI Transparency Act or SB 942. Under the Act, a covered provider will have to make available an AI detection tool (at no cost to the user). The tool has to meet the following criteria: -         Be publicly accessible (caveat: provider may impose reasonable limitations on access to the tool to prevent/respond to “demonstrable risks to the security or integrity of its GenAI system”) -         At no cost to users -         Allow users to assess whether image, video, or audio (or their combination) content was created/ altered by the provider’s GenAI system -         Output any system provenance data detected in said content -         Make sure it doesn’t output any personal provenance data detected in the content -         Allows users to upload content or provide a URL linking to online content -         Allow users to access the AI tool directly without having to visit provider’s website SB 942 defines a ‘covered provider’ as a person “that creates, codes, or otherwise produces a generative artificial intelligence system that has over 1,000,000 monthly visitors or users and is publicly accessible within the geographic boundaries of the state.” The Act doesn’t apply to “any product, service, internet website, or application that provides exclusively non-user-generated video game, television, streaming, movie, or interactive experiences.” Providers shall offer users an option to include a clear and conspicuous disclosure showing that content was created/altered by provider’s GenAI system. The disclosure has to be permanent or “extraordinarily difficult to remove, to the extent it is technically feasible.” Under the Act, providers are prohibited to: -         Collect or retain users’ personal information (exception: when users submit feedback or opt in to be contacted by provider) -         Retain any content submitted to the AI detection tool for longer than is necessary to comply with this Act -         Retain any personal provenance data from content submitted to the AI detection tool by a user Violators will face a civil penalty of $5,000 per violation. The law will enter into force on January 1, 2026.
