If autonomous platforms become very cheap to produce and automated video analysis capabilities improve, AMS could enable widespread monitoring for contraband smuggling and military equipment movement, observing IED/AMS placement or ambush preparations, locating and tracking persons of interest, drawing fire to reveal enemy positions, etc. Insurgents may also be able to access and utilize such technology, but AMS seem more likely to benefit regular forces given the asymmetries in operational openness (e.g., government buildings vs. mountain caves or urban tunnels) and possibly also due to the need for large data storage and analysis infrastructure. #defense #defense #drones #warfare #isr #ie #ams Campaign Catapult. Today I wrote about legislative efforts to ban DJI drones from U.S. airspace -- most recently, by potentially adding them to a Federal Communications Commission list of equipment unable to use the nation's communications infrastructure. Given the bipartisan popularity of the efforts, DJI has has launched a vigorous lobbying campaign to push back. AFWERX AFVentures has issued a Notice of Opportunity (NOO) within the Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) program for both air and space projects. The window for government champion-led capability package submissions will open on July 25 and close September 18 at noon ET. "The STRATFI program underscores our commitment to transitioning dual-use commercial technologies into the hands of our Airmen and Guardians, ensuring that our military forces have access to the most advanced state-of-the-art capabilities that are emerging in our private sector,” said Col. Elliott Leigh, AFWERX director and chief commercialization officer for the United States Department of the Air Force. “This Strategic Funding Increase is not just an investment in hardware; it's an investment in our national security, safeguarding our values and interests for generations to come."
