Recently I listened to the 100th episode of the Hogan Science of Personality podcast. The topic was values, and I loved this quote from guest and Hogan founder, Robert Hogan, "Personality is always on; values kick in when decisions have to be made." https://lnkd.in/eU3F_nKs To me, some of the beauty, but also frustration, of the modern world is the optionality that now exists. It is crucial to clarify that DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) is not synonymous with Affirmative Action. Labeling someone as a “DEI hire” demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of DEI's purpose. DEIB is a strategic framework adopted by many organizations to foster cultural change, bringing together diverse groups of people. This change leads to innovative solutions for complex problems, increasing creativity, productivity, and profitability. Diversity encompasses a wide range of attributes, including varying backgrounds such as veterans, persons with disabilities, different age groups, LGBTQ+ community members, various genders, races, religions, cognitive diversities, and cultural backgrounds. It includes White males (CIS) as well. The goal of diversity is to mix these differences to combat "groupthink" and maximize diverse perspectives, leading to higher-quality products and services. Equity involves assessing and ensuring that an organization's culture, policies, practices, and processes are fair and considerate of all employees' needs. Equity ensures that all employees have access to opportunities and resources that enable them to thrive, including fair recruitment, hiring, orientation, and career development processes. Inclusion refers to creating an environment where all individuals feel valued and integrated into the organization. It ensures that diverse individuals are actively included in decision-making processes and organizational activities, fostering a sense of belonging. Belonging emphasizes the importance of individuals feeling accepted and valued for their unique contributions. It is about creating a culture where everyone feels they are an integral part of the organization, leading to engaged, motivated, and committed employees. In summary, DEIB is about fundamentally transforming organizational cultures to be more inclusive and equitable, leading to enhanced innovation, improved problem-solving, and greater overall success. It is time for those in positions of influence to educate themselves on the true meaning and importance of DEIB and to support initiatives that foster these values within our society.
