One of the world's largest canyons, the #GrandCanyon in Arizona sits along the Colorado River and is one of the Wonders of the World. It has stunning layers of red rock that attract more than 6 million visitors yearly. More than 6 million visitors per year travel to take in the breathtaking layered bands of red rock. The Transcanyon Waterline, built in 1970, provides water to the Grand Canyon's millions of tourists and local communities. The 12.5-mile water line has had over 85 major breaks since 2010 that have affected water delivery. The National Park Service selected Bentley user HDR to design the replacement of the water system. Reaching depths of over a mile and containing some of the earth’s most severe topography, the Grand Canyon presented many logistical challenges. HDR used drones to collect visual and point cloud data to create a reality modeling solution to design the improved #water #infrastructure accurately. Providing the information digitally eliminated the expense for manual surveys, saving approximately 1,000 resource hours, and reducing design contingency by approximately 5%. The TCWL replacement is expected to be finished in 2027. With the recent news of Salt Lake City's successful bid for the 2034 Winter Olympics, Utah joins northern Italy as the second region to play host twice in the 21st century (SLC 2002 and 2034, Torino/Milano-Cortina 2006 and 2026). The parallels, I think, will be interesting to compare in years to come. Both initial games (as well as Milan's EXPO 2015) are often held up as among the more successful mega-events of the modern era, paying off in terms of immediate economics, destination branding, and catalyzing innovation. With the IOC Agenda 2020 parameters establishing new host evaluation metrics moving forward, these cities will be among the first to test this novel, sustainability-first model being pushed. Already there are some clear overlaps (re-using of infrastructure) and divergences (SLC's densely-contained games vs. Milano-Cortina's wide-spread setting). They should be important case studies. Looking forward to following along with their respective identities as details continue to solidify...

Burnout: I’ve got to get away, I wanna fly away Lenny Kravitz, cultural icon and paragon of how to age, sang these words back in the 1990’s. Thirty years later, a lot of us still feel like we’ve got to get away. Burnout is nothing new - Lenny knew it in the 90’s. SHRM’s Employee Mental Health in 2024 Research Series, found that 44 percent of 1,405 surveyed U.S. employees feel burned out at work, 45 percent feel “emotionally drained” from their work, and 51 percent feel “used up” at the end of the workday. In an attempt to address and reduce burnout, companies and non-profits have arisen proposing solutions. Docastaway (https://www.docastaway.com) has been around since 2010, and allows you to get away, really get away. Based out of Hong Kong, Docastaway offers to maroon clients on desert islands. If a Bear Grylls style adventure does not sound relaxing, they also offer “Comfort Mode,” which includes indoor plumbing, kitchens, an island style DoorDash, and in some cases, nearby resorts you can paddle a canoe to. If private desert islands seem a little rich for your blood, or you aren’t able to take time off,  the California Department of Public Health has a website (https://neverabother.org) aiming to help those experiencing burnout and other more serious issues. It is, and I cannot stress this enough, one of the cutest websites I’ve ever seen. The site refers you to mental health resources, some paid and some free. Whether you want to maroon yourself on a desert island or you just need someone to talk to, there are options for dealing with burnout in the workplace and beyond. 🎆 Enjoying the Magic of Disneyland 🎆 We recently visited Disneyland and attended the Oogie Boogie Bash (tickets for this Halloween event are sold separately). Nothing beats California sun when it’s raining in Seattle, and Disneyland is even more magical when it’s decked out for Halloween! Here are a few tips for your next trip to Disneyland. 🏨 Where to stay? There are three off-downtown-Disney properties and many great hotels nearby. The amenities for staying at a Disney property have decreased over the years, but when we went, there was a 30- minute early entry. This gets you onto a couple of rides and allows for an easy, fast walk to the Rise of the Resistance queue once the park officially opens. If you want to maximize your park time and your kids (or you) may need a midday nap, it can be worth staying at one of the Disney properties or nearby hotel. We splurged on this trip (milestone birthday) and stayed at Disneyland Hotel, enjoying Trader Sam’s, a quick walk through security and into the park, and a lovely suite to get into our Halloween costumes for Oogie Boogie Bash. 🏃‍♀️‍➡️ Park hopper or no park hopper? Disneyland has two parks – the classic Disneyland and California Adventure. You can get single park tickets or get a park hopper, which allows you to go between the parks after a set time. It’s more costly, but it gives you flexibility to switch between parks to hit your must-see rides. One tip we learned this trip: you can’t sign up for the virtual queues (new queues to me this year) until you have scanned into the specific park where the ride is located, even if you have a park hopper. 🍔 Where to eat? This was the first time we’ve been to Disneyland where in-park reservations were helpful. At Disney World, reservations are a must have, but Disneyland you haven’t historically needed them. This time, we did need them. Carthay Circle was a highlight, especially during Oogie Boogie when there were so many fun costumes. No reservations needed for a corn dog, pickle, or Flo’s, so don’t panic. If there is space, you can join virtual queues for restaurants once you’re in the park too, and many spots now have mobile orders too! 👓 Lessons learned this trip? We went (a bit controversial) kid-free this time! Here’s what we discovered: When a ride breaks down, just get out of line. No one will have a meltdown, and no one needs to stand in an hour-long line hoping it reopens. If the single rider isn’t moving, get out of line and come back later. My 144-page San Diego Official Voter Information Guide arrived yesterday via postal mail. While I highly recommend that everyone vote, I absolutely hate having to slog through these guides in preparation for casting my vote. Well, we are living in a brave new world. ChatGPT to the rescue. I found a PDF version on the San Diego Registrar of Voters website (https://lnkd.in/gf2c4RGZ) and downloaded a local copy. Providing that to ChatGPT, simple prompts can now be used to glean pertinent information. Examples: Me: Tell me about Prop 2 ChatGPT responds: Proposition 2 on the November 2024 ballot in California proposes authorizing the state to sell $10 billion in general obligation bonds. These bonds would fund the repair, upgrade, and construction of facilities at K-12 public schools (including charter schools) and community colleges.  The goal is to improve health and safety conditions in schools, as well as upgrade classrooms, especially in areas like science, engineering, transitional kindergarten, and career technical education. [Additional information was provided by ChatGPT, not included in this post for brevity] Me: Summarize all propositions, including what supporters and opponents are saying. Create a downloadable Excel spreadsheet where the summaries are in column A, and I will use column B to mark my vote for easy reference later. ChatGPT: I have created the Excel spreadsheet with the proposition summaries in column A and an empty column B for you to mark your votes. You can download it using the link below: [Download Proposition Summaries Spreadsheet ​] As you can see, ChatGPT didn't do exactly what I asked for but made an improvement. The proposition number is in A, and the summary is in B, leaving C for my vote. Now, I have an easy reference for filling out my ballot. Using Excel, I had to wrap Column B for easier reading. These are extremely simple prompts. The mind reels with possibilities for this use case or any other PDF you want to interrogate.

Time to fly home from #dattocon24! Thanks to my AM team, the vendors/sponsors, the hotel/event staff, and my peers for swapping stories. It's not easy to host an event for 5000+ people! #kudos For swag, I want a comfortable K365 pillow! For food, we need protein! #carbsandcoffee For events, I want more breakouts with Kaseya/Datto and vendors with my peers. For the future, I am stoked for updates to Autotask! Nothing else matters if the PSA isn't aligned and optimized. Plan the work, work the plan. Write it down! I'd love to see my MSP as a client of our own myITprocess. Change is constant and incremental. Energy is fed by celebrating milestones. I am looking forward to my proposal for K365 user and helping my clients stay safe with their business productivity. Today would have been my grandmother's 100th birthday. While she passed away two years ago, her memory lives on. I love recreating coasters in No Limits. For this one, which is one of my favorite coasters, I went all out. I created every fence walkway and even created the object known as "baby" which is used for testing the ride.
