Ireland's flagship mobile data traffic forecast for the period up to 2028 predicts a significant and compounding slowdown in annual traffic growth (16.5% CAGR), conforming to the S-curve profile observed in other advanced markets even as the country continues to experience among the highest annual percentage increases in population in the EU27. The present context is that Ireland's mobile subscribers today exhibit the highest level of mean data usage per capita in Western Europe (308GB per annum), with a traffic profile that more closely resembles Nordic countries like Denmark (413GB per annum) and Sweden (342GB per annum) than neighboring mobile markets in the UK (164GB per annum) and France (209GB per annum). Historical mobile traffic volumes in Ireland in the period between 2018 and 2022 were broadly consistent with the central forecast scenario (32% CAGR) published by telecoms regulator ComReg in 2018, but rose above the central case from 2020 and ended 20% above the central forecast in 2022, potentially due to the distortionary impact of the pandemic on traffic patterns. Faster than expected population growth in Ireland explained approximately a quarter of the total variation between outturn mobile data traffic and the aforementioned forecast up to 2022. Historical data traffic forecasts for Ireland have tended to overestimate mobile handset usage growth and underestimate mobile broadband usage growth due to higher than expected subscription growth for the latter category and the sluggish development of a #5G use case ecosystem for the former. The latest mobile data traffic forecast for Ireland, developed by Frontier Economics on behalf of ComReg, covers the period 2024-2028. It forecasts traffic volumes will grow at an average of 16.5% per year up to 2028, with a slowdown of growth within the model, from 18% in 2024-2025 to 15% in 2027-2028. The model forecasts that the share of total traffic generated by mobile handsets will increase in this period, from 76% in 2023 to 84% in 2028, reflecting an expected marked slowdown in mobile broadband usage growth as National Broadband Ireland completes its FTTH rollout to every rural premises in the country. This traffic forecast for Ireland is notably more conservative in its projections than those published by Ofcom (which previously forecast 36% CAGR for the UK in the period 2021-2025) and Ericsson (which forecast 20% CAGR for Western Europe in the period 2022-2028). The divergence with the UK's forecast model can partly be explained by the fact that Ireland's growth curve is already at a more advanced stage, with almost double the average annual mobile data consumption per capita. But without substantial changes to the demand side in the coming years, driven by the types of emerging use cases (e.g., AR/VR/XR) often flogged by vendors, it is very difficult to see how there will be anything other than a growth plateau in mobile traffic by the end of the decade in advanced markets.

The story of inspeq ai is pretty amazing. Two engineers who didn't know each other, and didn't have an idea, both with backgrounds in multinational big tech companies in Ireland (Amazon, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Meta), decided to leave their jobs and take the entrepreneurial journey. They met eachother in the Founders Talent Accelerator, became co-founders, and within just a few months, have raised $1M to address a big global issue in AI safety. And nice to see also multinationals leaders as angel investors also, including the former MD of Meta Ireland, a senior executive at Salesforce, Gong, BT, and many others coming in alongside VCs Sure Valley Ventures (shout out to DC Cahalane) who led the round with Delta Partners. Bit of flywheel effect between multinationals and startups. We need more startup stories like this! What’s ahead for 2024? Elections in some of the most influential countries in the world including the US, India, Venezuela, Russia, South Africa, Taiwan, China and the UK. And yet we have zero handle on the use of generative AI, by legitimate or illegitimate players, in manipulating the electorates in how they will vote. That’s terrifying. In a small effort to equip myself with some strategies and frameworks for how to think through the use of AI in digital product design I took this course. It’s only a start but it’s an important one. Center for Humane Technology (CHT) remind us that it is possible, and economically viable, to develop products that help humanity rather just driving engagement. To anyone who is applying AI to products that will be out in our world, I recommend looking into the work of Tristan Harris, Randima Fernando and colleagues at CHT. So, that’s my hot take for the new calendar year. What’s shaping your thinking around AI?

This is a really interesting article about the eventual commoditisation of AI. We at Jiva.ai have been banging this drum for several years. All good technology eventually becomes like a life/business necessity, sometimes not always visibly so. AI is becoming a core component of almost everything you interact with. Which means those who know how to build and manipulate it (rather than package it and sell it) are the ones with the real power.
