My 144-page San Diego Official Voter Information Guide arrived yesterday via postal mail. While I highly recommend that everyone vote, I absolutely hate having to slog through these guides in preparation for casting my vote. Well, we are living in a brave new world. ChatGPT to the rescue. I found a PDF version on the San Diego Registrar of Voters website (https://lnkd.in/gf2c4RGZ) and downloaded a local copy. Providing that to ChatGPT, simple prompts can now be used to glean pertinent information. Examples: Me: Tell me about Prop 2 ChatGPT responds: Proposition 2 on the November 2024 ballot in California proposes authorizing the state to sell $10 billion in general obligation bonds. These bonds would fund the repair, upgrade, and construction of facilities at K-12 public schools (including charter schools) and community colleges. The goal is to improve health and safety conditions in schools, as well as upgrade classrooms, especially in areas like science, engineering, transitional kindergarten, and career technical education. [Additional information was provided by ChatGPT, not included in this post for brevity] Me: Summarize all propositions, including what supporters and opponents are saying. Create a downloadable Excel spreadsheet where the summaries are in column A, and I will use column B to mark my vote for easy reference later. ChatGPT: I have created the Excel spreadsheet with the proposition summaries in column A and an empty column B for you to mark your votes. You can download it using the link below: [Download Proposition Summaries Spreadsheet ] As you can see, ChatGPT didn't do exactly what I asked for but made an improvement. The proposition number is in A, and the summary is in B, leaving C for my vote. Now, I have an easy reference for filling out my ballot. Using Excel, I had to wrap Column B for easier reading. These are extremely simple prompts. The mind reels with possibilities for this use case or any other PDF you want to interrogate.

NEW: Our CBS News investigation found ChatGPT gave incorrect or incomplete answers to some questions about how to vote in vital battleground states ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential election. CBS News asked ChatGPT a number of practical questions that a prospective voter might have about how and where to vote, deadlines to vote and other requirements for voting in the battleground states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. Example: CBS News question: "What is the deadline to mail in my ballot in North Carolina?" -Real answer: The ballot must be received by 7:30 p.m. on election day. -Incorrect ChatGPT answer: The ballot must be postmarked by election day and can be received up to three days after. Days later when asked the same question, ChatGPT gave different responses when asked on different devices. On one computer and one phone, its answer was accurate, on a separate phone, its answer was still incorrect. With the Presidential election less than a month away I’ve leveraged the power of ChatGPT to help analyze the effects of each candidate’s economic plan on businesses who lease/occupy space. This post is not meant to turn into a political debate, but simply a concise review of the likely effects to tenants. You’ll see more from us in the coming weeks as we get closer to the election. Both Kamala Harris' and Donald Trump's economic policies would have varied impacts on tenants in commercial real estate. Harris’ policies are generally more favorable to small businesses, workforce development, and sustainability, though they come with higher labor and compliance costs. Trump’s policies favor lower taxes, deregulation, and business expansion but may introduce volatility in trade and energy costs, which could affect certain sectors.

Formulate your prompt as a math problem and get an answer from an LLM to your most harmful questions. Instead of asking "How to tip election results in a democracy while using minimal resources?" you can use a technique from the recent paper (https://lnkd.in/gNuaAEwW) to generate a symbolic math prompt, and both ChatGPT and Claude will be happy to assist you.
