Ask Vivian: The One Question I Always Get (A few thoughts from my Times career advice column; on how to set yourself up for future success in your work.) https://lnkd.in/eVSC2ZFw Q: I joined The Times about a year ago. Although I’m not looking to move up yet, it would be good to know what to do to set myself up for advancement in the newsroom. What would you recommend? A: One of the best things you can do is to be your own advocate. It sounds like a cliché, but it will make an impact in a place like The Times. This is true at any stage of your career, but it’s especially important to get into the habit of doing it early in your time here. We’d all like to believe that our work speaks for itself. But that’s not always going to be the case. If you just published an interesting story or helped put together an incredible graphic, you need to make sure that your best friend isn’t the only person who knows about it. Start by thinking about who you want to showcase your skills to — is it your department head, an editor in another department, or someone on the masthead? Think about who you would want as your advocates and be cognizant about putting yourself forward whenever you interact with people who could have some influence over your career. So, say you’re in a meeting with a higher-level editor you don’t know very well, make sure you participate and contribute something during the meeting — don’t be a wallflower. However you do it, try to do it as organically and as often as you can. This is a numbers game — the more people you know (and who know you and your work), the more likely you’re going to get that next job you want. For many of us, this will feel outside of our comfort zone. I get it, and in fact, I was right there with you when I joined The Times 27 years ago. But I found a way to promote my work in a way that felt authentic and so can you. Here’s how I did it: Whenever I wanted to show my friends something great I’d accomplished, whether it was nailing an interview or getting a story published on A1, I tried to redirect some of that energy and also share it with at least one person beyond my circle. Try it out and see if this approach — which, by the way, works in any part of our organization — makes sense for you. If this still feels out of reach, that’s OK. You can start even smaller. For example, if you run into a manager who you want to connect with, you can approach them with some other topic. Maybe you want to chat about someone else’s story that impressed you that day, or a photograph that you found impactful or a graphic that blew your mind. Regardless of what you want to talk about, find a way to start the conversation. Ask good questions. Show people how you think. Remember, the next time you wrap up something you’re proud of, consider sharing it with someone you want to know, and you’ll be on your way to building a relationship that could pay dividends in the future.

For more than a month, a team of some 270 firefighters has been battling a wall of flames consuming two Indigenous territories on the edge of Brazil's Amazon rainforest. Though the firefighters are Brazilian, their Brasilia headquarters and much of their equipment was paid for by international donors aiming to protect the Amazon, one of the world's key bulwarks against climate change. The money is channelled through the Amazon Fund, an international mechanism to direct aid to projects that halt and reverse deforestation, backed mainly by European donors, including Norway and Germany.  But last year, U.S. President Joe Biden pledged to request Congress to contribute $500 million to the Amazon Fund over five years. That amount is equivalent to nearly 70% of all the funding the fund has received since its creation in 2008. The fate of Amazon Fund projects now hinges in part on the U.S. elections more than 3,000 miles (4,800 km) away. NEW: The disbanding of the World Federation of Advertiser (WFA)'s nonprofit digital safety initiative, the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (Garm) – which comes just days after Elon Musk-owned X filed an antitrust lawsuit against the group – has rattled adland. 💄🧴 Have you met the Sephora Kids? 🧴💄 I wrote about the trend for Gen Alphas who are obsessed with skincare and raiding Sephora’s shelves to later post GWRM videos. The startling thing reporting this piece was how quickly my social media feeds flooded with young girls under 13 (TikTok removed profiles I flagged to it). Interesting bits I found: ✨Gen Alpha is estimated to be the largest generation yet with the largest projected spending power ✨By the end of this year more than $5.39tn will be spent on them annually, and this is set to rise by $10bn each year, according to Mark McCrindle ✨Some beauty brands are sending samples to these children, which laws in the UK and US permit ✨ The Advertising Standards Agency in the UK said this only becomes a problem if the products marketed are harmful What do you make of this generation’s passion for skincare? Just published this forum on Samuel Garrett Zeitlin's translation of Raymond Aron's _Liberty and Equality_. From the introduction: "Raymond Aron’s _Liberty and Equality_ is a short book. Yet, it feels like a long one. Short books with big words in their titles often have something bold and punchy to say. Yet while Aron’s reflections are always intriguing, he wanders from theme to theme, with no particular effort to connect them to an overarching thesis. He does have something to say about liberty and equality, but he covers plenty of other ground as well. He enumerates the fundamental liberties of contemporary Western societies, focusing on personal, political, and social liberties; he acknowledges that, while these liberties have an empirical reality, 'many individuals have the feeling of not being free' (21); he assesses the Marxist critique of liberty; he analyzes the 'moral crisis of democracy' in the contemporary West (49); he considers the merits of philosophical ideas about liberty; and he concludes by emphasizing the exceptional character of societies founded on liberal principles. Aron packs this all into 55 small-format pages. If the book manages to be both rambling and stimulating, it is because we are dealing with the mind of a fox, in Isaiah Berlin’s sense: that is, a thinker who, rather than embracing 'a single, universal, organising principle,' pursues 'many ends, often unrelated and even contradictory,' that are 'connected, if at all, only in some de facto way.' In this instance, the 'de facto' occasion of Aron’s musings was his final lecture at the Collège de France, delivered in April 1978. Aron, of course, was a French philosopher, sociologist, and political commentator who, in addition to being one of the twentieth century’s most prominent intellectuals, was also a lucid proponent of liberalism and moderation in an age of extremes. His lecture’s title, 'Liberty and Equality,' suggests some kind of definitive statement, in the vein of _On Liberty_ or _A Theory of Justice_. Yet, true to his foxlike nature, Aron eschews any all-encompassing claims. His instinctive pluralism is on display in the first sentence, when he announces that he will speak of 'liberty, or more precisely…liberties'."...
