Decoding Regression: What do regression coefficients really mean for HR? Regression analysis is one of the most powerful tools in people analytics, giving us insights into how different variables impact critical HR outcomes such as performance, turnover, or retention. But the true power of regression doesn’t lie in running the model; it lies in interpreting the results, particularly the coefficients. At their core, regression coefficients are the numbers that quantify relationships: ✅ Direction: Does an increase in a variable (e.g., engagement) lead to an increase or decrease in the outcome (e.g., performance)? A positive coefficient means “more leads to more,” while a negative one means “more leads to less.” ✅ Magnitude: How much does a change in one variable affect the outcome? For example, does each additional training hour improve performance slightly or significantly? ✅ Significance: Are the relationships between variables strong enough to be considered meaningful, or could they just be random noise? These coefficients form the foundation of actionable insights, but only if we understand and apply them thoughtfully. Imagine you’re building a model to predict employee performance based on three key factors: engagement scores, training hours, and tenure. The output looks like this: Performance = 50 + 1.2(Engagement) + 0.8(Training Hours) - 0.5(Tenure) Here’s what the coefficients reveal: 1️⃣ Engagement (1.2): For every 1-point increase in engagement, performance improves by 1.2 points. Engagement is a strong driver of performance. 2️⃣ Training Hours (0.8): Each additional hour of training results in a 0.8-point boost in performance, highlighting the value of ongoing development programs. 3️⃣ Tenure (-0.5): Surprisingly, performance drops slightly (by 0.5 points) for every additional year of tenure. This suggests long-tenured employees may need skill refreshers or re-engagement strategies. From the equation, we can: 1️⃣ Focus on what matters most: Engagement has the strongest positive impact on performance, so doubling down on initiatives like recognition programs or leadership training could yield significant gains. 2️⃣ Tailor interventions for specific groups: Long-tenured employees may require personalized development plans to maintain high performance levels.
