How can you build a successful freelancing business as a self-employed professional?
Be clear on the problem you solve and why you are solving that problem. Your ‘why’ will ground you and inspire your customers. Defining your target audience and having a differentiator has value early on. However, beware of overthinking and decision paralysis. If you don’t have a clear niche or a differentiator, that’s ok. Get started working with anyone who has the problem that you love to solve. You will continuously learn as you work with customers who to narrow your focus to and how to evolve your services. These decisions are not a one-and-done.

How can a leadership development coach help a client struggling with time management?
After assessing the current state with your client, guide them to envision a future state. What does the ideal state look like? What makes it ideal? The future state vision will guide the plan of action with the client. The future state also helps the client have a forward-looking mindset: a mindset of stepping into a vision rather than one of correcting habits of the past.

How can you balance assertiveness and empathy when leading a team?
Assertiveness and empathy are not necessarily mutually exclusive. You can be assertive in an empathetic way. You can be empathetic in an assertive way. That said, it is important to know your starting point -- your natural tendency towards empathy or assertiveness. When you know your natural tendency, it becomes easier to identify which quality does not come naturally to you. What is less natural to you may require you to make a more concerted effort to build that quality until it becomes easier for you to flex it when you need it.

How do you design learning activities that support transfer of skills to the workplace?
One of the challenges of training is that the participant is pulled out of their day-to-day environment to take the training. Sometimes, the participant’s manager or teammates have not joined that training with them. When they return, there is no ongoing accountability to implement the specific skills learned or drive lasting behavior change. A manager or coach can help the participant identify and navigate the training takeaways. Through a coaching conversation, they can align on what’s most relevant for the participant and the team’s context, identify barriers to implementing the relevant skills learned, and define what outcomes they aim to deliver. This step of debriefing and coaching will help the transfer of skills into the workplace.
