Little quick blueprints doodling of the day 😀 https://lnkd.in/eqUBtKCr A simple proof of concept about how we could use Scriptable BP tools to have custom 3D handles, instead of the regular xform gizmos, to drive various systems ( here, a simple PCG graph ). That would allow the users to have dynamic handles ( using geometry script ), to have direct feedback on manipulations. A few quick tips for your demo reel and/or static portfolio: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 with short text captions to reference what you did in the shot and what project it was from. 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 that you used to create the work in words. Don’t just put logos to represent the software you used. Not all recruiters come from an artist's background and know what the logos are referring to. A lot of recruiters use Boolean searches to look for talent (a type of word search). A Boolean search isn’t going to read a logo! For multi-person projects, specifically, 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫. For example, in an animated demo reel, if you’re able to grey out the parts you were not responsible for and keep your own animated parts in color that is helpful to the viewer to distinguish what is yours and what is not. #artrecruiter #portfolioadvice #helpfultips #quicktips #portfoliotips #videogamejobhunt #jobhunting

I finally found the time to create and share something that has been on my backlog for a while! I often encounter confusion (my own included) when trying to use math to develop more efficient solutions than simply relying on built-in tools in 3D software. In particular, this post dives into object orientation in Maya—a task that can range from straightforward to quite complex. I understand how hard it can be to approach this kind of problem without a strong technical background, but solving these challenges programmatically can provide much greater control and performance. It’s definitely time well spent, and your workflow will improve significantly as a result. I’ve provided both the code and a brief (though not exhaustive) introduction to key linear algebra concepts. I hope this helps shed some light on the topic and offers clarity in an area that can often seem tricky. A special thanks to Marco D'Ambros — without his patience, I would still be a long way from understanding any of these concepts! Any feedback is more than welcome.

NetBramha Studios: A Masterclass in How NOT to Hire I’ve seen some bad hiring processes, but NetBramha Studios just set a new low. After they reached out to me for a graphic designer role, they rejected me based on a 5-minute phone call. That’s right—5 minutes. No task, no real assessment—just a quick call, like they had some divine vision from God telling them not to hire me. Seriously? It's common sense that not everyone is going to be fully prepared to be some superstar in an impromptu call. And if you're judging a designer without even letting them design, you’re clearly not doing your job right. How do you call yourself a top-tier company with such lazy hiring practices? I’m not here crying over a rejection—those happen, and I get it. But it’s laughable when a company jumps to conclusions without any real effort to assess skills. If you’re going to reject someone, at least give them a task first so you have something to base your decision on. And hey, Raghav from your team, a little advice: get your act together. Hello! ✨ It’s been a while since I’ve shared any artwork, so here’s a piece I worked on during my time at BCIT! Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/g54qeYm2 I wanted to learn more about Houdini’s muscle system, but since I didn’t have actual muscle geometry to work with, I explored how to simulate muscles without them. So here’s my muscle without actual muscle piece. 💪🏼 It was quite the challenge, but I ended up learning a lot and became much more comfortable with Houdini overall. One of the most helpful resources for me was Houdini’s documentation, which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/grF_cBQP I learned a little bit about every node involved, and ended up with a result that I think it’s a good place to start from. For the texturing, I collaborated with John Santana, as I wished to create a homage of the cartoons I liked (and still like) as a kid. Fun fact: the muscular arm is a nod to Johnny Bravo. Overall, lots of learning and room for improvements, but I’m happy with how it turned out as an introduction to Houdini’s muscle system. Now back to learning! 🤓

They say opposites attract. But yin and yang can be boring. Think about the 70:30 rule when preparing pieces for your portfolio. Details are good, but too many details in a scene can be overwhelming. The work can become disorienting and unfocused. 70% Open - free space to let your eyes rest 30% Detail - focusable detail. An example of this could be in hard surface modeling. While maintaining detail within the asset, you want the model to be as readable as possible. However, don’t just think of this within the mesh of the asset. This rule can also apply to the texture, color, and composition of the piece as well as many other aspects of the piece such as lighting and shapes. Of course, rules can be 𝑏𝑟𝑜𝑘𝑒𝑛 but if you break them, do it well and with intention.

A beautiful thing about working in video games is that I start every day getting inspired by artists such as Igor Staritsin! I always mention to my students that they need to remember why they do the work that they do. The answer: to create impossible places where others can have great adventures. As game designers, it's our role to know what our market audience wants and find ways to create innovation in the way we present it. As developers, we need to look for the best gameplay experience and listen to critics and suggestions to tune every detail as our community of followers is expecting it. Images like this one can open our imagination to bring possibilities to our work as game designers and developers. It opens possibilities to us as Game Creators. I'm in the final process of interviewing people who are looking for the opportunity to start a career as a Game Creator but don't know where to start. Bit late talking about this one but huge news coming from 343 Industries, both a re-brand to Halo Studios and confirmation that they are switching development to Unreal. 🗞️ This comes off the back of 343's struggles with development of Halo: Infinite. We've seen many other studios move away from their own engines to Unreal, notably CD Projekt Red! Are proprietary engines going out fashion? 🤔 For those who have worked on both proprietary engines and Unreal, what have you found to be the key advantages of working with Unreal? #gamedev #unreal #halo

I recall, years ago, working at an indie studio and being told that we had to come in on a Saturday on a long weekend because the client would be there and we needed to look busy. Our project was on track, and overtime wasn't necessary to meet our target, but our producer was adamant that even if we had nothing to do, we had to sit there and look busy to set a good example. Not long after that, we worked over 24 hours, with team members (including me) sleeping under their desks for an hour or two to stay functional. Sadly, things like that were commonplace back then. Around that time, a developer's spouse became somewhat famous for calling out the unhealthy practices of her husband's employer, and many might argue that she was the spark that incited a need for change. All this to set the tone... I had a manager here at Treyarch that said the most gratifying thing a manager ever told me when I stopped by his office to ask if I could take an hour to step out for an optometrist appointment. I'm paraphrasing, but he replied, "We hired you for your expertise and the results you bring to the position. You don't need to tell me things like this because I trust you will deliver on your tasks and goals." That simple statement changed everything for me. It lifted an enormous weight off my shoulders and allowed me to be more results-driven than being concerned that I make every single minute of the day about productivity or looking "busy". We've come a long way since those times, and there's still work to be done, but I encourage you to lead with trust and to empower your team to be results-driven instead of a butt in a chair. I can also proudly say that Treyarch has continued to be a shining example of promoting a healthy work-life balance and making the workplace safe and encouraging. Even though I'm about to shamelessly plug joining the Treyarch team, I was not asked to write this post and do so because I truly believe it's a great place to work.
