I get it: y’all have AI fatigue. And yet I’m going to quip on my personal experience, this time with C#. Admittedly, I’ve never coded in C# (vs Java), nor I am familiar with specific language constructs. No biggie! Comes Amazon Q + VSCode. 1. AQ was able to explain code pitfalls. 2. AQ was able to point out memory leaks. 3. AQ recommended (defensive) code changes. I’ve tried it with defects and stories type of work (new work vs rework). With no prior experience in programming language, with a bit of formal CS education, and with a bit of brain and logic, and a good peer review!, was able to complete the work in hours vs days. If you are in the fence or you are already an expert - I get it, you may find it boring and amusing. But don’t pass on it, give it a try, confirm with your own experience what works for you. I'm so proud of the work that went into the OpenVMM and OpenHCL. My team has focused on storage devices, and there is a ton of great code in this repo contributed by the engineers working on this (me: I'm a manager, so of sometimes dubious value :)). It's very exciting to see this code become open source! Not only is this a checkpoint in all the hard work that goes into writing a new VMM (and in my team's case: storage emulation code), it also marks a new way of working for some of us. While many engineers in Microsoft from different orgs have contributed already, we're going to keep developing this in the open. As the blog post below mentions, reach out on GitHub or Zulip. Or, you can contribute to the code itself (anyone else love debugging IDE emulators?). While we're already using this code in Azure (over 1.5 million VMs last month, according to the blog), there's still plenty of interesting and exciting stuff to go do.

I was in this episode of Decoding Leadership with Jade Rubick, which just came out. It was a delightful conversation, and when I first became a manager, Jade is one of the people I wanted to emulate. We talk in the first half about engineering hiring and supporting early career engineers, and the second half is more about why large scale projects fail or succeed, and the preventable problem paradox (coined by Shreyas Doshi, but a longstanding problem in our industry).

An open letter from Meta employees to Mark Zuckerberg and Meta's leadership. Very well articulated, I couldn't have done it myself better! I left Meta end of 2023 because of many things similar to what's mentioned in the letter, so I can definitely relate.

Virtual threads reduce the overhead of switching threads.The real benefits come in when there is bottlenecked by thread creation/destruction time or by the memory limitations of having thousands of threads at once.

Super interesting (and technical) breakdown on how the folks at ClickHouse are transforming the simple, flexible JSON format into something that can be leveraged at hyperscale. An excellent example of how sometimes scale can make you do crazy things.
