This is an excellent framing by Molly, and I found myself revisiting this more recently: > "As a CEO, your job, for the rest of time, is to fix the holes in as strong and permanent a way as you can. The number one way to do that is to hire great leaders who have seen some of this rodeo before (guides) who can help you patch some of the other holes, meaning help you build, teach, and coach the rest of your team. To figure out how to prioritize, you have to figure out which roles are (a) most important to the long-term success of your business and (b) least likely to be solved with duct tape." https://lnkd.in/envstshA

One of the most significant responsibilities of a leader is to establish a solid structure that guides both the leader and the team. A structure provides clarity, helps distribute roles effectively, and promotes accountability. Without it, even the most talented teams can struggle to achieve their potential. Here are key reasons why putting up a structure is essential: 1.Vision Alignment– A clear structure ensures that everyone understands the mission, vision, and their part in fulfilling it. It bridges gaps between ideas and execution. 2.Consistency – When there's a set process in place, the team knows what to expect, creating an environment of stability and reliability. This also leads to better decision-making. 3.Accountability– With defined roles and expectations, each team member knows their responsibilities, leading to greater ownership and fewer chances for confusion or missed deadlines. 4.Scalability– Growth is only possible when there's a foundation to build upon. Structures help organizations expand without losing focus or efficiency. Great leaders don't just inspire; they put systems in place to ensure their vision becomes a reality. Take the time to establish a structure, and you'll see a more organized, motivated, and productive team. PS: Have you ever worked in an organization without a structure share your experience in the comment section.

Leadership starts with a simple principle: lead the right people. It sounds elementary, but think about it... in any standard distribution, most individuals are about average. Extraordinary talent lives in the outliers. To get extraordinary results, leaders need extraordinary people. This means hiring people who surpass your abilities, even if they eventually outgrow your team or shine brighter than you. I'd even go so far as to say that in the realm of management, hiring becomes a manager's most critical task. Steve Jobs said it this way, "A players like to work together, and they don't like it if you tolerate b-grade work." A players attract other A players, but B players, driven by fear and a need for control, hire C players. Once an organization begins hiring B players, it quickly descends into mediocrity. Or, in the words of Teddy Roosevelt, "The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it." Start by hiring the right people and then leave them alone. Leaving them alone doesn’t mean abandoning them. It means empowering them to grow and expand and do their work. If you’re comfortable with your team surpassing your own skills, they can achieve exponential, rather than linear, results. "If you always hire people who are smaller than you are, we shall become a company of dwarfs. If, on the other hand, you always hire people who are bigger than you are, we shall become a company of giants," - David Ogilvy. In sum, mastering the art of talent assessment and hiring the right people is a competitive advantage for exceptional leaders.

The best leaders are constantly 'selling'. For many, the idea of selling is repulsive because they think of the typical used car salesperson trying to psychologically coerce them into buying a lemon they don't need. However, the best leaders are continually 'selling' in the new way of selling. Selling is about identifying a problem and aligning a solution that provides value to both parties. Think about the last time you went to buy a vehicle. A good salesperson will take time to understand your problem. Then they will help you find a vehicle that provides the experience you want. A poor salesperson will coerce you to buy something that is in their interest to sell. They don't sell solutions, they sell products. The next time you're leading a team, stop trying to coerce people into something they don't believe in. Instead, take time to understand the challenge faced and work with them to align solutions. You'll build far more ownership and you'll be surprised how productive your team becomes.

Most people will tell you that you need to build a team to scale, a team that runs the business without you, and a team to step away from daily operations. And all of those things are correct. In fact, I often talk about building independent teams that are empowered to make decisions in your absence so you can step away from your business. But before you start building a team, you need to work on your emotional readiness. This way, when your first hire comes on board, you'll be emotionally equipped to lead them. The worst thing you can do as a leader and business owner is to hire a team but not give them the opportunity to show what they can do. I often see leaders who, due to emotional unpreparedness, fail to properly onboard new hires or give them the trust they deserve. This results in new hires leaving due to a lack of leadership and emotional readiness on your part. Remember, building a team isn't just about hiring—it's about being ready to lead and let go.

Bad Leadership Truths... What traits make a bad leader? In our 25+ years of working with challenged leaders and critical staff, the ranking of the traits is subjective. That said... they show up over and over again. Here are the top 5 traits of a bad leader: If I missed any please share yours in the comments section. 1. They are minimally trusted 2. Take credit for employees’ work 3. Lack trust in employees 4. Hire or promotes the wrong people 5. Fail to provide direction Quite often leaders and staff are clueless of where they stand or fall on Leadership Traits. They often do what they 'think or feel" is right. What they "think or feel is right" costs the organization profits in the tens of thousands of dollars in the form of low morale, employee turnover, reduced job satisfaction, lost productivity, and underperforming staff. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Being a good leader is a fulltime job that encompasses key skills, work arounds, and yes practice. Some managers don't lead teams; they destroy souls and kill passion. They see success in numbers alone, ignoring the fact that the employee is the most important element of the equation. An official who thinks that public reprimands are an effective technique or that oppressive employee management produces creativity, does not realize that he is burning bridges of trust between him and his team. These officials cultivate fear rather than ambition, treating employees as easily replaceable tools. The result? A stifling work environment, frustrated employees, and creative ideas that kill in the bud. If you're one of those, stop for a moment and ask yourself: Would you like to be the reason your team is frustrated? In the escape of talented people from your organization? Leadership is not just a title or authority; it is a moral responsibility and a humanitarian duty. Real success does not come from crushing souls, but from inspiring them. A successful leader is the one who ignites enthusiasm, not the one who extinguishes it. Review yourself before you lose your team, and trust that investing in people is the smartest and most durable investment."

Is Your Business Built on a Solid Foundation? The Role of Systems in Team Success We often hear about how crucial systems are for scaling a business, and while that’s true, there’s a critical step that must come first: building a strong team. No system, no matter how well-designed, can succeed without a capable and empowered team behind it. It’s like trying to build a house without a solid foundation—it just won’t stand. If there’s no foundation, the house will eventually collapse. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to nurture the talents of our team, trust their abilities, and create an environment where they feel confident and supported. Teamwork and collaboration are the pillars of any successful business. Systems should support the team, not replace it. Leadership isn’t about controlling every process or relying solely on systems. It’s about empowering people, building trust, and guiding them with a clear vision. A great leader knows that systems should come after the foundation is laid. Without a solid base, even the best systems will crumble. At the end of the day, the strength of any business lies in its people. Invest in your team, build a strong foundation, and only then will your systems truly thrive.
