Congratulations to Nemi Walding who has passed her Viva on #PhD research into “The influence of moisture on pyroclastic density current dynamics and deposits: implications for understanding volcanic stratigraphy”. Thank you to External examiner Prof Hugh Tuffen (Chair in Volcanology, Lancaster University); Internal examiner, Dr Rob Thomas; and to Dr Charlotte Hopkins of the University of Hull for acting as Independent Chair. Both examiners were in agreement that Nemi had undertaken a huge volume of work that was of a consistently excellent quality. Nemi worked with academic supervisors Dr Rebecca Williams and Dr Anna Bird from the University of Hull, Prof Dan Parsons from Loughborough University, Dr Natasha Dowey from Sheffield Hallam University, and Dr Pete Rowley from Bristol University. During her PhD studies, Nemi won funding from the Utrecht Grant Scheme, a mobility grant that allows students to work in a partner university. The grant supported Nemi to work alongside Dr Federico Lucchi of Università di Bologna, whose research aligns with her work around Pyroclastic Density Currents (PDCs). The picture of Nemi was taken on the volcanic island of Vulcano during fieldwork. Read a research paper from Nemi Walding: https://lnkd.in/e_4U6Qnf

Important summary of new flood and coastal erosion risk maps show how many more properties are at risk. Details of the mapping will be important to help understand how we can build future #resilience UK Coastal Resilience Network (Coast-R) https://lnkd.in/eYfRrbMS
"Understanding of flood and coastal erosion risk is vital to ensuring that policy makers, practitioners and communities are ready to adapt to a changing climate." For the first time since 2018, we’ve updated our National Assessment of Flood Risk and National Coastal Erosion Risk Map to give an accurate picture of current and future flood and coastal erosion risk. Our Director of Flood Risk Strategy and Adaptation, Julie Foley, discusses the significance of this and how it will help in our aim to create a more resilient nation 👇 https://lnkd.in/eq9UR4dj

Join us for the Water and Coasts Network Event on 17 January 2025 and collaborate, connect and learn about water and coastline management! https://lnkd.in/eDXjfAQg Water and Coasts is a Hull and East-Riding focused series of events which bring together different groups, individuals and organisations that are all working on or exploring issues relating to regional flooding, erosion and water management. This session is in collaboration with Living With Water and is looking to generate a dialogue around the green spaces in Hull and East Riding and how they can be better utilised for flood and environmental sustainability. We look forward to welcoming speakers from: · Hull Food Partnership · Hull Green Space Strategy · James Cooke of Ecology, BNG · Dr Steven Forrest, Lecturer in Flood Resilience and Sustainable Transformations at the University of Hull · And short presentations from other stakeholders attending the event. Book via Eventbrite https://lnkd.in/eDXjfAQg and join us at the Oasis Hub, 310 Newland Ave, Hull HU5 2NB from 10am on 17 January 2025. Congratulations to our #PhD researcher, Blessing Mucherera who is a co-author of a new book on "Displacement, Borders and Unsettling Narratives". All while completing his PhD research at the University of Hull!
✨ New Book Publication Announcement! ✨ I’m thrilled to share the release of Displacement, Borders, and Unsettling Narratives. Co-authored by a diverse team of educators and researchers, this book explores the urgent intersections of displacement, border politics, and pedagogy during turbulent times. The time has come to take the risks of climate-induced modern slavery seriously For UN Human Rights Day, Dr Daniel Ogunniyi, Modern Slavery Lecturer at the University of Hull, discusses the impacts of climate change on human rights and argues that the time for action is now. Read the article. https://lnkd.in/eztXPxyC UN Human Rights Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 1948. “Unlike the traditional forms of human rights violations attributable to state agents and other private actors, climate change has rather emerged as the invisible actor with severe and sometimes more devastating human rights impacts.” Dr Daniel Ogunniyi, Modern Slavery Lecturer, University of Hull

Today we bid a fond farewell to EEI Ops Team member, Amy Hindhaugh Ness. Amy has been with us since 2021, supporting our researchers and particularly our postgraduate research programmes. We’re all extremely sad to see her go but take comfort that she will be making the world a safer place, one crime scene at a time in her new role as a CSI. All the best in your new role Amy!

Congratulations to Maisy Bradbury from our #AuraCDT in Offshore Wind Energy and the Environment, who successfully defended her #PhD thesis this week. Maisy’s research focuses on “Scour mitigation measures around offshore wind structures using experimental models” and she worked closely with industry partners, HR Wallingford to conduct both numerical and flume-based experiments. ‘Scour’ is erosion of the area around the base of an #offshorewind turbine by waves or currents, which can cause damage to cables to the turbine structure itself. Maisy has compared different approaches to providing scour protection for various types of foundation, quantifying the performance and level of protection offered, taking into account the lifecycle of an offshore wind installation. Thank you to Maisy’s external examiner, Thor Ugelvig Petersen from NIRAS and to internal examiner Steven Simmons from the University of Hull. Maisy was based at the University of Hull and was supervised by Stuart McLelland from Hull, Rob Dorrell of Loughborough University and Kerry Marten and Prof Richard Whitehouse of HR Wallingford. Congratulations Freija Mendrik on your new paper, based on #PhD microplastics research at the University of Hull
Excited to share that the final paper from my PhD on microplastics in the Mekong River is now published! ✨ We sampled throughout Cambodia and Vietnam and showed that: - Microplastics increase downstream, dominated by polyester fibres - 86% are below the surface, highlighting the importance of sampling depth - An optimum sampling depth was identified to ensure representative sampling - Microplastic transport differs from sediment, with concentrations dropping during monsoonal flows. Our work shows the complex transport of microplastics in large rivers and the need for improved sampling methods to assess environmental risks and inform policy. Our Director, James Gilbert spent a thought-provoking and inspiring day at yesterday's Great Northern Conference. The University of Hull's Prof Fiona Matthews spoke about the role of universities in driving innovation - particularly how universities in the north can get a larger share of research and innovation funding to support the important sectors in the region. Prof Matthews was part of a plenary on ‘Creating a thriving North through Innovation’, alongside Simon Green, CEO of Humber Freeport, Lucinda Yeadon of CEG, and Harry Baross, Regional Project Manager for Hull and East Yorkshire, North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub. The conference theme was on achieving ‘a greener, fairer, equal future for the North’ with #NetZero a key topic, so it was great to see both Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng and the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves take an active role. #PBIAA #onenorth University of Hull University Of Hull Knowledge Exchange
