The community commissioners from the first Hull Poverty Truth Commission, Hull City Council, and the University of Hull evaluators are pleased to invite visitors to our interactive "The Truth About Poverty" exhibition at 20-22 Brook Street, HU2 8LA Drop-in between 10:30- 3pm, Tues 17 - Thurs 19 December to review the interactive displays: -Explore the Cabinet of Pooriosity - items that relate to poverty, make do and mend etc -Precarity Jenga - one more issue and it all collapses -Spinning yarn to spin a yarn – storytelling -Painting 'the houses we want' -Mish Mash Meals - a celeriac and pick 8 other random items that you might get in a foodbank bag to make a meal -Poverty protests, the MY Pockets film🙂and much more. Today we bid a fond farewell to EEI Ops Team member, Amy Hindhaugh Ness. Amy has been with us since 2021, supporting our researchers and particularly our postgraduate research programmes. We’re all extremely sad to see her go but take comfort that she will be making the world a safer place, one crime scene at a time in her new role as a CSI. All the best in your new role Amy!

Congratulations to Maisy Bradbury from our #AuraCDT in Offshore Wind Energy and the Environment, who successfully defended her #PhD thesis this week. Maisy’s research focuses on “Scour mitigation measures around offshore wind structures using experimental models” and she worked closely with industry partners, HR Wallingford to conduct both numerical and flume-based experiments. ‘Scour’ is erosion of the area around the base of an #offshorewind turbine by waves or currents, which can cause damage to cables to the turbine structure itself. Maisy has compared different approaches to providing scour protection for various types of foundation, quantifying the performance and level of protection offered, taking into account the lifecycle of an offshore wind installation. Thank you to Maisy’s external examiner, Thor Ugelvig Petersen from NIRAS and to internal examiner Steven Simmons from the University of Hull. Maisy was based at the University of Hull and was supervised by Stuart McLelland from Hull, Rob Dorrell of Loughborough University and Kerry Marten and Prof Richard Whitehouse of HR Wallingford. Our Director, James Gilbert spent a thought-provoking and inspiring day at yesterday's Great Northern Conference. The University of Hull's Prof Fiona Matthews spoke about the role of universities in driving innovation - particularly how universities in the north can get a larger share of research and innovation funding to support the important sectors in the region. Prof Matthews was part of a plenary on ‘Creating a thriving North through Innovation’, alongside Simon Green, CEO of Humber Freeport, Lucinda Yeadon of CEG, and Harry Baross, Regional Project Manager for Hull and East Yorkshire, North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub.  The conference theme was on achieving ‘a greener, fairer, equal future for the North’ with #NetZero a key topic, so it was great to see both Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng and the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves take an active role. #PBIAA #onenorth University of Hull University Of Hull Knowledge Exchange
