Solmaz Farhang has been announced as the winning artist in the Climate Public Response 2024/25 open call from the Energy and Environment Institute and Humber Street Gallery. https://lnkd.in/e4XAMSWY Solmaz joined us at last month’s #CoastRNetwork launch events, where she was able to meet with people and organisations with an interest in #coastalresilience, from all around the UK. The open call sought bold, visionary proposals for a new commission of visual art that delves into the challenges of living and working on the Yorkshire coastline at the interface between land and sea. Professor Briony McDonagh said: “We’re delighted to be working with Solmaz to explore challenges and opportunities encountered by coastal and estuarine communities at the forefront of the UK climate transition.” Solmaz is an interdisciplinary artist based in London whose work spans and expands upon different disciplines including photography, video art, assemblage, drawing and multimedia installations. Central to her artistic practice is an exploration of storytelling and speculative thinking, through which she engages with themes of identity, ecology and the relationship between human and nature. The commission will result in an exhibition at Humber Street Gallery from 14 February until 18 May 2025. An excellent day at the launch of the The Resilient Coastal Communities and Seas Network Launch. Fantastic to spend time considering how we can work together better to support coastal communities. So much knowledge and expertise in the room and the opportunity to bring together different perspectives was inspiring. For me it's about how we can support and enable people in coastal communities to benefit from the opportunities to be more physically active in their local places, whilst supporting nature recovery and taking action on climate change. This network is will be an important part of that jigsaw. #CoastRNetwork #ActiveHumber #NorthYorkshireSport

The UK Coastal Resilience Network (Coast-R) Network Launch event was a blast today! The morning panel discussion was incredibly thought-provoking, underscoring the importance of listening to coastal communities, prioritizing their needs, sharing knowledge and resources, and fostering collaboration, including finding ways to connect with minoritised ethnic communities! An extended lunch break provided a great opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, both old and new, and to hear about the inspiring projects they’re working on. In the afternoon, the workshops on Deep Mapping and Collaborative Coastal Enquiry introduced me to some fascinating new approaches for community engagement. Excited to see where this journey with Coast R Network will lead! #resilience #collaboration #coast #community

It's been a fantastic day launching the #CoastRNetwork. I enjoyed chairing our panel discussion which brought together diverse organisations to share their thoughts on the opportunities and challenges for coastal cummunities. Together they identified lots of common themes and the wealth of knowledge and experience that we can share. Thank you!
We’re having a fantastic, engaging and thought-provoking conference today to officially launch the #CoastRNetwork. Thank you to Emma Hardy MP, Minister for Water and Flooding at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for providing a welcome to our delegates and to Andrew Telford of the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council for introducing the Resilient Coastal Communities and Seas Programme. Coast-R Network Lead, Prof Briony McDonagh introduced our inclusive and collaborative community of practice and our priorities areas of work to build knowledge, action and resilience for UK coastal communities and seas. She also outlined the key project themes, stressing that these were not fixed but would be co-developed with partners at this meeting and through further stakeholder engagment activities: 1.People, places and participation 2. Living with coastal (un)certainties 3. Working together for resilience Our panel discussion, chaired by Prof Stuart McLelland, drew together representatives from different stakeholder groups and geographic areas to discuss knowledge gaps and opportunities for collaboration in order to enhance coastal resilience. A big thank you to all members of our panel: Louise Barker, Senior Investigator with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales Peter Lawrence, Director of Coastal, Infrastructure and Minerals, The Crown Estate Estate; Susana Lincoln, Senior Scientist with Cefas and the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership (MCCIP); Beccy MacDonald-Lofts, Lead Officer with the Local Government Association Coastal Special Interest Group (LGA Coastal SIG); Ailsa Mackay, Chief Executive Officer, The National Centre for Resilience; Clive Walmsley, Senior Specialist Advisor in Climate Change & Decarbonisation at National Resources Wales; Imogen Wood (née Sambrook), Senior National Consultant in Heritage & Climate with the National Trust. And that’s a wrap on our #CoastRNetwork Launch Event. In her closing remarks, Prof Briony McDonagh said: “I have been struck by important commonalities that abound between us all. A common mandate for actions for the future. We were bowled over by the experience and the goodwill in the room and the meaningful basis for cooperation and collaboration.” Thank you to the representatives from all the Resilient Coastal and Seas Programme Projects, including GINA YANNITELL Reinhardt (she/her) from ARISE, Kate Spencer from RACC, Tim Acott from TRACC and David Atkinson from TRANSECTS, for all the lively conversations during the networking lunch. Following the afternoon workshops, the Living Glossary will be added to the website alongside outputs from the ‘Deep Mapping’ workshop. Material from the Collaborative Coastal Enquiry will underpin our first foresight document due to be published in 2025. The discussion and collaboration has continued into the afternoon at today’s #CoastRNetwork Launch Event at the University of Hull. Our delegates joined two of three hands-on workshop sessions, all taking a different approach to questions around coastal resilience. Sarah Gambell, PhD from the University of Glasgow & Coast-R Network co-investigator, Kate Smith of the University of Hull led an introduction to developing “deep maps” using Google MyMaps and a range of participatory arts and mixed media techniques. All with the question “What’s important about your coastal places(s)?” at the heart. Coast-R Network co-investigators, Stephanie Jones of the University of Southampton and Larissa Naylor of the University of Glasgow led a session designed to co-create a Living Glossary of terms for our new community. Asking questions like “What is ‘coastal’? What is ‘resilience’? What is ‘community’? And indeed, what is not coastal, not resilience, not community? Coast-R Network lead Briony McDonagh and co-investigator Fraser Sturt from Southampton University led the Collaborative Coastal Enquiry. A collaborative, participatory enquiry session giving participants the opportunity to respond to coastal challenges and topics derived from our community workshops and network surveys. Thank you to all our guests for approaching all these activities with enthusiasm and contributing to decisions about the future of the #CoastRNetwork Aberystwyth University University of Leeds University of Liverpool
