Organising a state-level league or even a city-level league can offer better engagement and monetisation ( after 2-3 years) opportunities compared to national leagues. Operational expenses can be better controlled in comparison to nationwide operations. Incorporating local language and players can significantly enhance entertainment value and foster a sense of belonging for sponsors if executed properly. Currently, UK sports teams and clubs with the biggest spending power tend to cater to their fans with the latest innovations with more rewarding and immersive experiences. Simply as they have bigger spending power. Lower league clubs fans on the other hand get minimal enhanced match day experience opportunities - if any. Simply because there isn't the same budgets. From my experience, this is across ALL sports. Moving into 2025, league wide 'top-down' strategies are absolutely essential, with the right robust scalable technologies, to transform sports fandom and not just for fans who can attend matches, but wherever they are and however they are consuming - globally! What will 'top down' standardised fan engagement strategies at a league level promote? 1️⃣ Fan tech consistency - endorsed (and managed) at a league level 2️⃣ Wider fan loyalty - rewards for all types of fan and match participation: wherever they are located 3️⃣ Deeper insight to fan behaviour - same tools = standardised metrics 4️⃣ Inclusion, representation & access - All fans have can feel a deeper connection to their team/club whoever they support - feeling totally catered for. 5️⃣ Increased sponsorship opportunities - unlocking upgrades to in stadium AV infrastructures in the process. It’s a win for entire sports ecosystems if leagues start offering and endorsing standardised fan engagement opportunities for ALL clubs to access. The role of sports leagues in shaping immersive fan experiences has never been more important to aid with connecting all fans with their clubs and teams in a standardised way. Glasgow has put forward a proposal for hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games at a significantly low cost, as confirmed by Commonwealth Games Scotland, in a recent announcement. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🔹 The proposed Games could be organised in two years with a budget of £130-150 million and minimal reliance on public funds. The financing would primarily come from a £100 million contribution from the Commonwealth Games Federation, and the remainder (£30-50 million) would be sourced from ticket sales 🎟 , broadcasting rights 📺 and sponsorships 💼. The projections suggest that the Games could generate a revenue of £100-200 million. 💷 🔹 The proposed timeline is an 11-day sporting event to be held in July/August 2026, featuring approximately 10 core sports. 🏅 🔹 Glasgow hosted the 2014 Games, which included 17 sports. FTA sport's economic benefit "An independent report commissioned by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) from Oxford Economics estimates that the economic impact of public service media (PSM) sports broadcasting contributed €4.9 billion to Europe’s GDP and supported over 60,000 jobs in 2022. The findings include direct contributions from content production and broadcasting and significant indirect and induced impacts due to supply chain spending and employees’ consumer expenditure. The study also explores wider impacts, such as the way in which PSM coverage attracts sponsorship income for sport." It's a really interesting finding. Conventional wisdom is that sports is so popular that people will pay for it, and take adverts, and so there is big incentive to keep behind a paywall. It's what still is the lynchpin for #paytv and keeps it going. That's why in the UK the Premier League is on Sky on pay-TV. In Spain La Liga is on Movistar, DAZN and Orange, Germany, DAZN Sky Deutschland etc etc. And yet, when you have big events like the World Cup both mens and womens football, the European Cup, Rugby, Cricket etc. these are on FTA, and drive much greater viewing than paytv, and even with the appeal of sports, the reach on FTA is so much greater, and it will people who wouldn't normally get involved in national events, suddenly tune in. "The report also reveals the many benefits of FTA sports broadcasting on culture and society, reinforcing the pivotal and unifying role of PSM organisations in this space. “Our analysis unveils a symbiotic relationship between free-to-air sports broadcasting and economic vitality, illustrating the far-reaching ripple effects of this dynamic industry right across the continent,” commented Doug Godden, Lead Economist at Oxford Economics and author of the report. “What’s more, providing sporting action to audiences for free has great value to the public of the countries in which EBU Members operate.”....As well as providing broader economic advantages such as leveraging additional income streams for sports through sponsorship, advertising revenue and event hosting fees (and often stimulating local tourism from visiting sports fans), FTA media exposure can also help grow and expand the fan base of ‘emerging’ sports, leading to increased gate receipts and merchandising." *The end of gambling sponsorship?* Well, if the new code just announced is to be adhered to and properly monitored, the answer is, YES (and good riddance). The code is reported as stating “to protect children and other vulnerable persons, gambling sponsorship must be specifically designed to limit its reach and promotion to those under the age of 18” So… NO sponsor logos on playing shirts; NO advertising around the ground; NO gambling related branding on club websites and social media. Focus on Value: Salary caps and FFP limit spending on players. Sporting directors need to become more creative and identify undervalued talent or players approaching the end of their contracts with high wages at other clubs. Negotiations become even more crucial to secure top talent within the financial constraints. Squad Development: Investing in youth academies and promoting homegrown talent becomes a more attractive option. Sporting directors need to prioritize developing young players who can contribute to the first team while remaining cost-effective. Loan Market: Loan deals with buy options or player swaps become more strategic tools for acquiring talent without significant upfront costs. Sporting directors need to be skilled negotiators to find win-win loan agreements that benefit their team.
