An alarming reminder of the challenges we face in the recruitment market! CityA.M.'s latest report shows that over 400 UK recruitment companies went bust last year 🤯😩. Some of which were boutique SME's & Start-Ups, others were prestigious enterprises which you would've never predicted. "Why should we outsource recruitment? Can't our TA team handle it?" I think... Internal TA teams are experts in understanding the company culture. Bu when it comes to scaling quickly or hiring niche roles, it's impossible to throw every role at them and expect them to fill it. Sometimes you need extra hands. Recruitment Consultancy ≠ Recruitment Administration (You're probably paying for consultancy, but getting administration) A lot of agencies operate as outsourced Recruitment Administrators, which is fine if that's the service you're paying for. Here's the difference: ❌ Administrators are reactive ✅ Consultants are proactive ❌ Administrators just advertise and then rely on direct applications ✅ Consultants find the absolute best candidates and reach out to them ❌ Administrators won't give you any real market insight ✅ Consultants have a deep understanding of your market & trends ❌ Administrators won't try to understand your business ✅ Consultants work to understand your business deeply ❌ Administrators take job orders and do what they're told ✅ Consultants will guide you on salary, timelines, interview process, etc. ❌ Administrators will ghost you at the first hurdle ✅ Consultants will work with you until the job is finished ❌ Administrators will tell you what you want to hear ✅ Consultants will tell you the truth, even when it's not pleasant ❌ Administrators are transactional ✅ Consultants are bought into your success and have a long-term view ❌ Administrators won't communicate with you ✅ Consultants will let you know what they need from you clearly ❌ Administrators don't know anything about your EVP ✅ Consultants will help shape your EVP, even if there isn't an immediate fee ❌ Administrators add very little value ✅ Consultants help your business scale & give you a big competitive edge To be clear, if you're paying anything above 17% + and your agency sounds like an administrator, you're getting severely ripped off. There are better options, and plenty of exceptional recruiters out there, even if you might have to kiss a few frogs! Equally, if you're expecting a consultant's service but won't pay what it's worth, don't be surprised if you keep being let down by your suppliers. You get what you pay for.

"We do all of our own recruitment in-house". Ok, but how much talent are you missing out on as a result of this? Unless you have an internal TA partner who is SOLELY focussed on Tech recruitment, there is no way that you're not missing a substantial chunk of the best talent out there. The fact is that if you're relying on adverts and searching job boards as and when a requirement comes up then you are only seeing the talent in the bottom half of the diagram below, you're missing out on the top half where the vast majority of the talent is. 👉 Broadly speaking, top-tier talent is well looked-after to keep them happy and in "not looking". You're not seeing the full market, and you're missing out on some of the very best people 👉 The candidates who sit in that bottom part diagram who you can access are not only smaller in number, but are very active elsewhere, so there is greater competition to secure them 👉 More competition means greater risk of losing them to another opportunity, leaving you back where you started, leading to protracted hiring processes By partnering with an experienced, market-specific recruiter, you get access not just to the "unemployed", "active" and "exploring" markets, but the whole market. You're getting the people who we spoke to about another role 6 months ago that just wasn't quite right.
